Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Look for Rob Morgan’s new book Worry Less, Live More fall of 2017 Why are we feeling so depleted when God has promised us strength equal to our days? Pastor Robert Morgan leads a busy life as a pastor and is also a multitasking caregiver to his disabled wife. Most days he feels exhausted, yet over time God has shown him how to build himself up when he’s worn himself out. He has learned to fully embrace Psalm 84, as he moves from strength to strength. The valleys and the weaknesses are inevitable. Our task is to embrace these as we wait for God to take us to our next time of strength. After reviewing the 232 occurrences of the word strength in Scripture, Pastor Robert discovered twelve clear passages that drop anchor in God’s Sea of Strength. Among the kinds of strength available to every believer are: Lifelong Strength: your strength will equal your days (Deuteronomy 33:25) Lasting Strength: they go from strength to strength (Psalm 84:5-7) Imparted Strength: the eyes of The Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to Him (2 Chronicles 16:9) Joyful Strength: the joy of The Lord is your strength (Nehemiah 8:10) Timely Strength: God is our refuge and strength (Psalm 46:1) Tranquil Strength: in quietness and trust is your strength (Isaiah 30:15) Renewed Strength: those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength (Isaiah 40:31) Recurring Strength: the Lord will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden (Isaiah 58:11) Durable Strength: the Sovereign Lord is my strength; He makes my feet like the feet of a deer, He enables me to tread on the heights (Habakkuk 3:19) Unwavering Strength: Abraham did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God (Romans 4:20) Innermost Strength: I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His Spirit in your inner being (Ephesians 3:16) Riveting Strength: I can do all this through Him who gives me strength (Philippians 4:13)

Book excerpt: The key to sustained competitive advantage in any industry is not size, image, or technology. It's talent, particularly at the leadership level. Your organization's future depends on its ability to identify, retain, and prepare a dependable bench - its next generation of leaders - continuously. Over the next several years, the baby boomers who have engineered some of America's greatest business growth will be retiring in huge numbers, creating talent gaps and unprecedented competition to fill them. How can your company stay ahead of the curve?Bench Strength offers a step-by-step approach to building a powerful talent strategy that will ensure the perpetual availability of potential leaders. Author Robert Barner leads you through important decisions about talent focus, including: The Make or Buy Decision: Should your talent strategy be focused primarily on developing leadership from within, or on acquiring ready-made leaders from other organizations? The Capstone/Foundation Decision: Should you concentrate development efforts on a few high-potential individuals, or spread resources across a broader section of your overall leadership bench? The Stream or Pool Decision: Should you identify successor candidates for specific leadership positions, or retain pools of potential leaders who may be qualified for any of a number of leadership positions as they become available? The Trade-Up or Build-Out Decision: Should you build bench strength by progressively trading up from marginally performing managers to high performers, or quickly expand the leadership talent base by hiring a large group of potential managers simultaneously? The Best-in-Industry or World Class Decision: Is your best talent strategy to focus on your own industry, or to look for cream-of-the-crop talent regardless of particular industry experience? The book also reveals the Seven Principles of Talent Deployment, which will help align your strongest players with your most critical and challenging needs. And the author's war games approach to pre-testing of talent strategies will put the organization in fine shape to address both in-house what-if issues and new developments in industry or market conditions.Barner also advocates for the creation of a new position in your organization, that of Chief Talent Officer. A new and increasingly recognized strategy, the hiring of a talent executive is a significant step with lasting implications, so you'll want to find out as much as you can about the potential talent officer. To that end, the author presents ten detailed questions to ask CTO candidates, the answers to which will illuminate their approach to evaluating talent, their ability to play a point position for the organization, their knowledge of your industry and the company's place within it, and much more

Book excerpt: Relatable, heartbreaking, and real, this is a story of resilience--the perfect novel for readers of powerful contemporary fiction like Girl in Pieces and Every Last Word. Before, I was a million things. Now I'm only one. The Burned Girl. Ava Lee has lost everything there is to lose: Her parents. Her best friend. Her home. Even her face. She doesn't need a mirror to know what she looks like--she can see her reflection in the eyes of everyone around her. A year after the fire that destroyed her world, her aunt and uncle have decided she should go back to high school. Be "normal" again. Whatever that is. Ava knows better. There is no normal for someone like her. And forget making friends--no one wants to be seen with the Burned Girl, now or ever. But when Ava meets a fellow survivor named Piper, she begins to feel like maybe she doesn't have to face the nightmare alone. Sarcastic and blunt, Piper isn't afraid to push Ava out of her comfort zone. Piper introduces Ava to Asad, a boy who loves theater just as much as she does, and slowly, Ava tries to create a life again. Yet Piper is fighting her own battle, and soon Ava must decide if she's going to fade back into her scars . . . or let the people by her side help her fly. "A heartfelt and unflinching look at the reality of being a burn survivor and at the scars we all carry. This book is for everyone, burned or not, who has ever searched for a light in the darkness." --Stephanie Nielson, New York Times bestselling author of Heaven Is Here and a burn survivor

Book excerpt: In 1944, on a sabotaged B-24 Bomber en route to a fifteen-hour mission to northern Germany from Cerignola, Italy, Navigator Robert C. Bueker parachuted from the stricken aircraft over Hungary and subsequently was captured by the Germans. A captivating tale of his physical trials and resourcefulness, mental anguish conquered by loving memories of his "childhood sweetheart" wife, depression erased by supreme confidence in the future and his unwavering belief in final victory unfolds in the mind of this German Prisoner of War awaiting repatriation. This is the story of courageous men who fought against the Germans over the skies of Europe against all odds. Men who watched their comrades fall to their deaths from fighter aircraft attack and anti-aircraft barrage. Men who saw their Groups and Squadrons devoid of aircraft after staggering losses that amounted to 65% casualties for combat crews of the 15th Air Force. Men who soon would realize after arrival in Italy that the next mission may be their last. World War II was a war that tried the stamina of a nation through a myriad of actions such as those portrayed in this memoir.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Costa Rica is the only full-fledged and totally independent country to be entirely demilitarized. Its military was abolished in 1948, with the keys to the armory handed to the Department of Education. Socially, Costa Rica is a success story. Although 94th in the world for GDP, it is in the top 10 on various measurements of health and well-being. Citizens enjoy high standards of living that include universal access to healthcare, education, and pensions. In addition, the country practices sustainable resource management, such as reforestation and the development of solar and wind power, and it expects to be carbon neutral by 2020. Hunting is illegal. 25% of the landmass is parks and reserves. The government supports universal health care, especially maternal and child health. Costa Rica even has a Blue Zone, an area where people live extraordinarily long, healthy lives. To some extent, Costa Rica is simply lucky: it was largely inaccessible, and it had virtually no precious minerals, therefore it was mostly spared the ravages of predatory colonialism. The Costa Rican people made very good social decisions, ranging from an avowed commitment to social democracy at the national level, to local land distribution to develop stable middle class farmers. But Costa Rica's neighbors have not enjoyed nearly as much peace and prosperity. It is unlikely that Costa Rica's demilitarization and its remarkable social success are coincidental; clearly, something special is going on. Through good luck, good leadership, and good decisions, Costa Rica has become arguably the sanest and most progressive country on earth. This book examines how and why Costa Rica is safe and independent without any military at all, and what the rest of us can learn from its success.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: G. Campbell Morgan Reprint Series Foreword If it is true that the measure of a person's greatness is their influence, not only on his own time but on future gen- erations, G. Campbell Morgan must be regarded as a great person. His greatness is seen not only in the wide impact of his ministry on both sides of the Atlantic, but in the fact that his books are still read and studied sixty-five years after his death. Named one of the ten greatest preachers of the twentieth-century by the contributing board of Preaching magazine, Morgan made the Bible a new and living book not only to the congregations who listened to him, but the vast multitude of persons who read his books. Fox sixty-seven years Morgan preached and taught the Scriptures and served churches in England and the United States. What is remarkable is that his commentaries and expositions of the Bible still speak to persons of a new millennium. There have been many changes in the world since he faithfully preached and taught the Scriptures, but the wide appeal of his books testify to the timelessness of his message. Although he held pastorates in the Congregational and Presbyterian denominations, he had an ecumenical appeal to persons of all denominations and traditions. The mystic Thomas á Kempis once wrote, "He to whom the eternal word speaks is delivered from many opinions." In one of his sermons, he referred to the words of Amos that there would be a famine for hearing the word of God (Amos 8:11). The timeless work of G. Campbell Morgan addresses that hun- ger, as his books enable his readers to get beyond opinions to the living Word. Wipf and Stock Publishers have rendered a great gift to the religious world in reprinting dozens of Morgan's books. This growing collection makes his books more available, so that readers have an option other than searching the internet for used, and often expensive, copies. Among this collection is the classic The Great Physician and commen- taries on the Gospel of Matthew and John. Persons seeking a living faith and a meaningful encounter with God would profit from reading any of these Morgan books. Near the end of his ministry, in a sermon entitled "But One Thing," Morgan commented on how Portugal changed the words of a coin after Christopher Columbus discovered America. No longer did the inscription say, Ne Plus Ultra (nothing more beyond) but Plus Ultra (more beyond). It is the hope of the G. Campbell Morgan Trust that the reprint- ing of these books will bring readers to the "more beyond," and an even deeper encounter with the Word in Scripture. The Morgan Trust Richard L. Book excerpt: Do you ever see an image on a book, hear a sound while walking down the street, or smell a scent carried by the breeze that makes you envision a whole other life? What would you feel if that life were real? You see yourself on the shores of the Nile as a priestess praying to the goddess Isis or witnessing your own trial at Salem or serving as Anne Boleyn’s handmaiden at court. This is exactly what happened to my friends and me. After spending thousands of years and countless lifetimes trying to repair our sisterhood, we finally had the chance to come together and restore our sacred contracts with Isis and with each other. We had to go back. We had to go back to the start of it all—the creation of our sisterhood at Philae and its destruction two hundred years later. Our story is one of betrayal, ego, and thirst for power. This is a murder mystery that would take almost two thousand years to solve. Come on our journey and discover the power of sisterhood and the Divine Feminine. For all my soul sisters, we remember you always and forever.
