Book excerpt: Let eRN be the usual vector-space of real N-uples with the usual inner product denoted by (. ,. ). In this paper P is a nonempty compact polyhedral set of mN, f is a real-valued function defined on (RN continuously differentiable and fP is the line- ly constrained minimization problem stated as : min (f(x) I x € P) • For computing stationary points of problemtj) we propose a method which attempts to operate within the linear-simplex method structure. This method then appears as a same type of method as the convex-simplex method of Zangwill [6]. It is however, different and has the advantage of being less technical with regards to the Zangwill method. It has also a simple geometrical interpretation which makes it more under standable and more open to other improvements. Also in the case where f is convex an implementable line-search is proposed which is not the case in the Zangwill method. Moreover, if f(x) = (c,x) this method will coincide with the simplex method (this is also true in the case of the convex simplex method) i if f(x) = I Ixl 12 it will be almost the same as the algorithm given by Bazaraa, Goode, Rardin [2].

Book excerpt: The variable metric algorithm is widely recognised as one of the most efficient ways of solving the following problem:- Locate x* a local minimum point n ( 1) of f(x) x E R Considerable attention has been given to the study of the convergence prop- ties of this algorithm especially for the case where analytic expressions are avai- ble for the derivatives g. = af/ax. i 1 ••• n • (2) ~ ~ In particular we shall mention the results of Wolfe (1969) and Powell (1972), (1975). Wolfe established general conditions under which a descent algorithm will converge to a stationary point and Powell showed that two particular very efficient algorithms that cannot be shown to satisfy \,olfe's conditions do in fact converge to the minimum of convex functions under certain conditions. These results will be st- ed more completely in Section 2. In most practical problems analytic expressions for the gradient vector g (Equ. 2) are not available and numerical derivatives are subject to truncation error. In Section 3 we shall consider the effects of these errors on Wolfe's convergent prop- ties and will discuss possible modifications of the algorithms to make them reliable in these circumstances. The effects of rounding error are considered in Section 4, whilst in Section 5 these thoughts are extended to include the case of on-line fu- tion minimisation where each function evaluation is subject to random noise.

Book Synopsis Boolean Methods in Operations Research and Related Areas by : P. L. Hammer
Download or read book Boolean Methods in Operations Research and Related Areas written by P. L. Hammer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In classical analysis, there is a vast difference between the class of problems that may be handled by means of the methods of calculus and the class of problems requiring combinatorial techniques. With the advent of the digital computer, the distinction begins to blur, and with the increasing emphasis on problems involving optimization over structures, tIlE' distinction vanishes. What is necessary for the analytic and computational treatment of significant questions arising in modern control theory, mathematical economics, scheduling theory, operations research, bioengineering, and so forth is a new and more flexible mathematical theory which subsumes both the cla8sical continuous and discrete t 19orithms. The work by HAMMER (IVANESCU) and RUDEANU on Boolean methods represents an important step in this dnectlOn, and it is thus a great pleasure to welcome it into print. It will certainly stimulate a great deal of additional research in both theory and application. RICHARD BELLMAN University of Southern California FOf(,WOl'

Book Synopsis Models, Methods and Decision Support for Management by : Peter Kischka
Download or read book Models, Methods and Decision Support for Management written by Peter Kischka and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title represents an ambitious undertaking, namely a broad view on the nature of intelligent decision making, which is characterized by the use of models and methods in the framework of decision support for management. With this title we want to reflect the scope of our field, but, at the same time, honor our colleague th Paul Stahly on the occasion of his 65 birthday. Paul Stahly has over decades invested his energy in developing the area of Operations Research from such a broad point of view. He has done this not only at his chairs at the HSG / University of St. Gallen and the University of Linz, but also on a broad international level as editor of ITOR and as influential member of all the Operations Research societies in the German speaking countries. He has, in particular, enriched our area by application-oriented research and industrial projects in fields such as logistics, emergency planning, [mance, and others, and he was pivotal in strengthening the cooperation between the national and international OR societies, particular in the German speaking area. VI Consequently, many colleagues who partly cooperated very closely with him, have contributed to this monograph. Some of these contributions have been presented at a colloquium in January 2001 in St. Gallen in honor of Paul Stahly. This colloquium was attended by many colleagues coming from Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and even from the United States.
Book Synopsis Barriers to Entry by : C.C.v. Weizsäcker
Download or read book Barriers to Entry written by C.C.v. Weizsäcker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was originally induced to think about barriers to entry by some re search done for Charles River Associates, Inc., Boston, on behalf of their client IBM Corporation, Armonk, N.Y. After the end of this re search project I continued to work on entry barriers and related is sues of market structure. The results of this effort are reported here. What I present is not a book in the traditional sense of the word. Due to other research and administrative obligations I could not, without substantial delay, present a more finished product. The rapid progress in the field of industrial organisation theory made me fear that my results could become obsolete if I further waited with their publica tion. I hope that the early presentation of a progress report rather than a much later publication of a finished product is not only in my interest but also in the interest of economics.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of Lie groups has proven to be a most powerful analytical tool in many areas of modern scientific endeavors. It was only a few years ago that economists discovered the usefulness of this approach in their study of the frontiers of modern economic theory. These frontiers include the areas of technical change and productivity, technology and preference, economic conservation laws, comparative statics and integrability conditions, index number problems, and the general theory of ~ observable market behavior (Sato [1980, 1981], Nono [1971], Sato and N~no [1983], Russell [1983]). 1 In Nono [1971] and Sa to [1981, Chapter 4] the concept of "G-neutral" (group neutral) technical change was first introduced as a natural extension of the well-known concepts of Hicks, Harrod, Solow and Sato-Beckmann-Rose neutrality. The present monograph contains a further extension of the G-neutral technical change to the case of non-constant-returns-to-scale technology and to the case of multiple factor inputs. The methodology of total productivity estimation by means of Lie group transformations is also developed in this monograph. We would like to express our sincere thanks to many individuals notably to Professor M. J. Beckmann, Professor F. Mimura, Professor G. Suzawa, T. Mitchell, K. Mino and P. Calem, for their numerous contributions at various stages of this work. We are also grateful to Marion Wathey for her usual superb typing of this difficult manuscript. Providence, R. I. , U. S. A.
Book Synopsis Production Theory and Its Applications by : H. Albach
Download or read book Production Theory and Its Applications written by H. Albach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1973, the European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management in Brussels has organized regular workshops in the area of management science. The aim of these workshops is to organize a European network of research in the area in order to improve the jOint research on an international basis. Some of these workshops were directed towards the development of certain specialities. The meeting in November 1974 was arranged around the theme "Production Theory and its Applications". It was divided into two sub-sections. One sub-section concerned "Industrial Production Problems" while the other was on "Production Problems in Universities". All presentations were supposed to present applied research in the area of production. The workshop was a great success. The papers were well developed and discussed. Most of the discussion was spent not so much on the analysis but on the assumptions behind the utilized analysis. However, the re actions presented by the audience of the workshop were a good base for the final outlay of the written material. The proceedings presented here contain the collection of papers in their final versions. By putting them together into one format we think we can present a document of high interest to people doing research in the area of production and to operations researchers solving practical production problems.
Book Synopsis Linear Multiobjective Programming by : M. Zeleny
Download or read book Linear Multiobjective Programming written by M. Zeleny and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 1.1. The origin of the multiobjective problem and a short historical review The continuing search for a discovery of theories, tools and c- cepts applicable to decision-making processes has increased the complexity of problems eligible for analytical treatment. One of the more pertinent criticisms of current decision-making theory and practice is directed against the traditional approximation of multiple goal behavior of men and organizations by single, technically-convenient criterion. Reins- tementof the role of human judgment in more realistic, multiple goal se,ttings has been one of the ma~or recent developments in the literature. Consider the following simplified problem. There is a large number of people to be transported daily between two industrial areas and their adjacent residential areas. Given some budgetary and technological c- straints we would like to determine optimal transportation modes as well as the number of units of each to be scheduled for service. What is the optimal solution? Are we interested in the cheapest transportation? Do we want the fastest, the safest, the cleanest, the most profitable, the most durable? There are many criteria which are to be considered: travel times, consumer's cost, construction cost, operating cost, expected fatalities and injuries, probability of delays, etc.
