Slowly, they turned the face of our natural wealth towards their own country. The raw material was imported from here to Britain and the finished product ready for sale came to India. In this very way, they kept on exploiting the wealth of India. During the struggle for independence, movements sometimes became sweet and sometimes sour. Tribal people had to do violent movements from their traditional weapons to sustain. Farmers fought in both violent and non-violent ways. The Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 proved to be a milestone. The brave warrior Mangal Pandey sacrificed his life, which added fuel to the fire, which made other warriors like Nana Sahib, Queen of Jhansi Laxmi Bai, Tantya tope, Bahadur Shah Jafar too made precious sacrifices. Soon after this revolt, the rule of East India Company ended and the administration of India fell into the hands of the Queen of England. Further, revolutionists like Chandra Shekhar Azad, Subhash Chandra Bose, Ashfkullah Khan, Batukeshwar Dutt, Khudiram Bose adopted the policy of Tit for tat and taught Britishers in their language. National Leader, Bal Gangadhar Tilak gave a public outlook to Ganesh Mahotsav and added lakhs of people to this movement. Mahatma Gandhi started a movement of independence from Champaran and adopted non-violence and Satyagraha as his basic principles. His movements like Swadeshi, Home rule, Non-cooperation, Dandi march and August Kranti sparked a new consciousness in the people of India towards the spirit of independence which made people join together, advancing towards freedom. After thousands of sacrifices and movements, India finally got freedom but the Britishers divided our country into two parts and gave us such a wound while going which continues to give us pain even today and is as fresh as ever. The book describes some of the most important movements, which is like a short document of various movements related to Indian independence.

Book excerpt: In the long drawn political struggle for the attainment of swaraj several leaders representing various regions of our sub-continent played their historic role. Each volume contains the significant phase of the movement which generated the spirit of patriotism among the millons of people. This multivolume work illuminates the role played by the Freedom Fighters during the freedom struggle. In fact, besides majority community, all minorities have played important role in freedom struggle. Dalit leaders equally played important role in 1857. This multivolume work thus highlights the contributions of people from all sections of society in the freedom movement during Indian freedom. This is an attempt to draw upon their remembrance of the freedom struggle. Efforts have been made to include Freedom Fighters from various regions. The reminiscences of these unsung heroes reveal deep dedication and spirit with which they fought against the atrocities of the British risking their life and profession. The history of Freedom Movement would be incomplete without mentioning the contribution of women. In the Volume IV, we can study about women who participated in the freedom struggle and made rich contribution in various ways. Some of them were imprisoned, fined and suffered for freedom, and their contributions cannot be overlooked. The great contributions of these ladies and lords should be brought to the knowledge of the present generation, and this would be the best way to pay homage to them. This multivolume is a tribute to the Freedom Fighters in India s freedom movement.

The preface serves as a gateway to the uncelebrated heroes whose deeds, though buried beneath the sands of time, are deserving of acknowledgment. It is an exploration into the lives of those who, with unyielding determination, stood shoulder to shoulder with the more recognized figures of the Indian freedom movement. The narratives encapsulated herein delve into the untold sacrifices made by these unsung heroes. Their stories echo the sentiment that the fight for freedom was a collective endeavor, shaped not only by the luminaries but also by countless individuals who believed in the dream of a free and united India. In resurrecting their spirit of sacrifice, we pay homage to the essence of selflessness that fueled the struggle.

Book excerpt: I have great pleasure in placing the report of One Day National Seminar on Forgotten Heroes: Stories of Unsung Heroes, Freedom Fighters”. The background of this National Seminar , undertaken with the financial assistance of Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, an initiative of the Government of India to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of independence and the glorious history of its people, culture and achievements. The Seminar attempted to recall and remember forgotten Heroes of our freedom movement, many of whom might be renowed yet unknown to the new generation. The aim of recalling and bringing forth stories, which lay as faded memories of the past, shall serve as a medium of inspiration and encouragement for the coming generations. The spirit of India is incomplete whilst we atke our unsung heroes along this journey of grwoth and development. Their ethos and principles ought to be recalled and respected. Thanks are primarily due to financial support by Indian Council of Social Science Research, New Delhi and their constant support during the whole process. I am also highly thankful to Convener, Debates and Seminar Committee of Government Degree College Tral who provided all kind of support in organising this national seminar. I am also highly thankful to other colleagues who supported me during this event. Dr. M.Shafi Bhat

Book excerpt: About the Book : -This documentary study on the neglected chapter of India's liberation movement deal with the efforts made by the Indian nationalists who chose to operate from abroad against the British Raj. Indian struggle for freedom was unique in the sense that it was fought on two fronts both ideologically different to each other. One was the silent struggle within the country under Gandhiji, while the other battle in nature violent was fought from abroad with the help of foreign powers. The documents included here recount in graphic detail the patriotic zeal and tireless efforts of Indian revolutionaries like Krishnavarma. Savarkar, Har Dayal, Madame Cama, M.N. Roy, Viren Chattopadhya Tarak Nath Das: V.V.S. Aiyer, Tirumal Acharya, Sohan Singh Bhakhna, and many others, who tried to raise the banner of revolt against the British and succeeded in establishing pulsating centers of anti-British activities in cities like London, New York, Paris, Berlin, Tokyo, San Francisco etc.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India’s struggle for Independence by Bipin Chandra is your go to book for an in-depth and detailed overview on Indian independence movement . Indian freedom struggle is one of the most important parts of its history. A lot has been written and said about it, but there still remains a gap. Rarely do we get to hear accounts of the independence from the entire country and not just one region at one place. This book fits in perfectly in this gap and also provides a narration on the impact this movement had on the people. Bipin Chandra’s book is a well-documented history of India's freedom struggle against the British rule. It is one of the most accurate books which have been painstakingly written after thorough research based on legal and valid verbal and written sources. It maps the first war of independence that started with Mangal Pandey’s mutiny and witnessed the gallant effort of Sri Rani Laxmi Bai. Many of the pages of this book are dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi’s non-cooperation and the civil disobedience movements. It contains detailed description of Subash Chandra Bose’s weapon heavy tactics and his charisma. This book includes all the independence movements and fights, irrespective of their size and impact, covering India in its entirety. Although these movements varied in means and ideas, but they shared a common goal of independence. This book contains oral and written narratives from different parts of the country, making this book historically rich and diverse. The book captures the evolution of Indian independence struggle in full detail and leaves no chapter of this story untouched. This book is a good read for the students of Indian modern history and especially for students who are preparing for UPSC examination and have taken History as their subject.
