Book excerpt: The results of an investigation into the behaviour of a finite amplitude pressure wave at the junction formed by the intersection of two ducts of equal cross-sectional area are presented. Using a shock tube to produce waves with amplitudes varying from 1 to 37 lb/sq in (g), pressure measurements were made in three junctions in which the side branch formed an angle of 45, 90, and 135 deg with the main branch. The results are compared with a theoretical analysis which is based on the assumption of one-dimensional, quasi-steady, adiabatic flow. Differences in the theoretical and experimental values were found at the junction entrance when the velocity at the entrance is subsonic and in the side branch when the velocity at the entrance is sonic. These differences are explained in terms of the wave action known to occur within the junction. (Author).

Book excerpt: Unsteady flow through three-branched pipe configurations was investigated with the object of finding boundary conditions suitable for use in the analysis of high-amplitude waves using the method of characteristics. The schlieren method and the hydraulic analogy were used to obtain qualitative information about the quasi-steady flow patterns. Quantitative information concerning these patterns was obtained by the measurement of stagnation pressure losses and of the static pressure distribution. Several methods of deriving boundary conditions were reviewed, and it is considered that those obtained directly by experiment are the most convenient to use. (Author).

Book excerpt: The study of flows and heat transfer in curved ducts and channels has been and continues to be an area of paramount interest of many researchers because of the diversity of their practical applications in fluids engineering, such as in fluid transportation, turbomachinery, refrigeration, air conditioning systems, heat exchangers, ventilators, internal combustion engines and blade-to-blade passages in modern gas turbines. Blood flow in the human and other animals also represents an important application of this subject because of the curvature of many blood vessels, particularly the aorta. The flow through a curved duct shows physically interesting features under the action of the centrifugal force caused by the curvature of the duct. The presence of curvature generates centrifugal forces which act at right angle to the main flow direction and produce secondary flows. In the present dissertation, a numerical study is presented for the unsteady solutions of the thermal flows through a curved square duct for various Dean numbers. Time evolutions of the resistance coefficient are presented for small curvature at the small Grashof number Gr = 100.

Pressure measurements have been made in junctions in which the side branch forms an angle of 45 degrees, 90 degrees, and 135 degrees with the main branch. In the 90 degree junction the effect of the area of the side branch to that of the main branch is examined; the values of the ratios being 1.0, 0.5, and 0.25. The amplitude of the incident rarefaction waves varies from 3 to 20 in Hg. The development of the quasi-steady flow pattern has been obtained by Schlieren photography. This information, together with the pressure measurements, has been used to develop a quasi-steady, one-dimensional, semi-empirical analysis of the flow. The results of this analysis are in good agreement with the pressure measurements and can be used as boundary conditions for the examination of pipe networks by the method of characteristics. Experimental results covering a wide speed range up to choking are presented for three flow geometries of a lateral branch off a straight duct using dry air as the working fluid. A new theoretical flow model provided results in fairly good agreement with the experimental data obtained. Flow visualization of the high-speed flow using the Schlieren method revealed the presence of normal shock waves in the combined flow about one duct diameter downstream of the junction. The highest attainable Mach number (M3) of the averaged downstream (combined) flow was 0.66 for several of the flow geometries. This value of M3 appears to be the maximum possible and is the result of a combination of flow separation and local flow choking.
