Book excerpt: AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A REESE'S BOOK CLUB PICK Tired, stressed, and in need of more help from your partner? Imagine running your household (and life!) in a new way... It started with the Sh*t I Do List. Tired of being the “shefault” parent responsible for all aspects of her busy household, Eve Rodsky counted up all the unpaid, invisible work she was doing for her family—and then sent that list to her husband, asking for things to change. His response was...underwhelming. Rodsky realized that simply identifying the issue of unequal labor on the home front wasn't enough: She needed a solution to this universal problem. Her sanity, identity, career, and marriage depended on it. The result is Fair Play: a time- and anxiety-saving system that offers couples a completely new way to divvy up domestic responsibilities. Rodsky interviewed more than five hundred men and women from all walks of life to figure out what the invisible work in a family actually entails and how to get it all done efficiently. With 4 easy-to-follow rules, 100 household tasks, and a series of conversation starters for you and your partner, Fair Play helps you prioritize what's important to your family and who should take the lead on every chore, from laundry to homework to dinner. “Winning” this game means rebalancing your home life, reigniting your relationship with your significant other, and reclaiming your Unicorn Space—the time to develop the skills and passions that keep you interested and interesting. Stop drowning in to-dos and lose some of that invisible workload that's pulling you down. Are you ready to try Fair Play? Let's deal you in.

Book excerpt: Helps readers move beyond the wounds and baggage of bitterness, disagreements, and broken relationships. "True or false: most Christian pastors and counselors agree on what forgiveness is and how it should take place." This question is part of Chris Brauns's Forgiveness Quiz that draws readers into his book and gets them thinking about the subject of forgiveness. The truth is, pastors and counselors disagree profoundly on this subject. Unpacking Forgiveness combines sound theological thinking and honesty about the complicated questions many face to provide readers with a solid understanding of biblical forgiveness. Only God's Word can unpack forgiveness. The wounds are too deep for us to find healing on our own, and the questions are too complex to be unraveled by anything but the wisdom of God. This book goes beyond a feel-good doctrine of automatic forgiveness, balancing the beauty of God's grace and the necessity of forgiveness with the teaching that forgiveness must take place in a way that is consistent with justice.

If you've ever found yourself in a relationship that feels and seemingly looks like one but you're struggling with commitment or you've been in the ambiguous territory of a 'casual relationship', you've likely tried to change them, wondered what you 'did' to cause this, what you can do to win their love and commitment, or even whether you're going crazy. Mr Unavailable and the Fallback Girl is the definitive guide to understanding the relationship between emotionally unavailable men and the women that love them. From explaining how and why they blow hot and cold, to where that future they promised went to, how you've ended up being a booty call, why you've been together for a gazillion years but aren't going anywhere, and more importantly how and why you're involved with them in the first place, all of the answers are here. You know you're dealing with unavailability when you ask stuff like What happened to that 'great guy' from the beginning? Why won't he break up or stay away if he doesn't want to commit? What the hell did I do to make him disappear? Is he going to leave 'her' for me? It's because he's shy/busy/scared of his feelings isn't it? Inspired by the real life adventures in unavailability of Natalie Lue and the readers of her site BaggageReclaim.com, Mr Unavailable and the Fallback Girl is an empowering, entertaining and inspiring read that will wise you up to pitfalls such as men who aren't over their exes, Future Fakers, guys that have more baggage than a Heathrow terminal and reappearing childhood 'sweethearts'. If you want to understand your own availability, and why commitment in a healthy relationship is eluding you, Mr Unavailable and the Fallback Girl is your guide to being available and attracted to healthy, available partners. Beloved Bible teacher Sheila Walsh teaches readers how the daily spiritual practices of confession, meditation on God’s Word, and prayer result in fresh freedom in Christ. In her long-awaited book, Sheila Walsh equips women with a practical method for connecting with God’s strength in the midst of struggle. From daily frustrations that can feel like overwhelming obstacles to hard challenges that turn into rock-bottom crises, women will find the means to equip themselves for standing strong with God. Using the spiritual applications of confession, prayer, and meditation on Scripture to form a daily connection to Jesus, women will learn how to experience new joy as a child of God who is fully known, fully loved, and fully accepted. In In the Middle of the Mess, Walsh reveals the hardened defenses that kept her from allowing God into her deepest hurts and shares how entering into a safe place with God and practicing this daily connection with him have saved her from the devil’s prowling attacks. Though we will never be completely “fixed” on earth, we are continually held by Jesus, whatever our circumstances. Sheila Walsh acts as our guardian in In the Middle of the Mess as she shows us we’re not alone in our struggles, guides us through a courageous journey of self-discovery, and reminds us where to find hope, comfort, and strength in tough times.

Book excerpt: I'm fed up of feeling inadequate... F..k what does that even mean? The word inadequate suggests that I'm in fact equating myself to something, I don't even know what that thing is, so how can I be not it? It's a frustrating human thing we all do, we measure ourselves up against shit that ain't real or even measurable. So now I have to work out what my metric value system is and what I'm not equating to so I can ensure that my emotional suffering is actually worth the effort and time I give it to thrive. When I was younger my inadequacies were centered around not being cool enough, I was at times a quiet kid, at times a complete loon and at times just going through the motions so was pretty much in neutral. I'd look at the other kids and wish I fitted in with them, with no real idea why I felt that way. I didn't have any actual evidence to suggest that perhaps they didn't want me to fit it, I just felt that way. Inadequate! And so that was the card I played. I can see now how those behaviours have stuck, and yet perhaps a variety of reasons, I'm still playing the same cards, from the same deck I had as a child. So always in search of this elusive 'right fit', I've been wandering the planet trying to see where I might belong without ever actually trying to fit into anything. How about YOU? It you are at the place in your life where you need a little guidance then perhaps its time to "Unpack"

Book excerpt: Willard Asylum for the Insane was opened in 1869 for the purpose of treating individuals in need of long-term care. Some of these patients came from other hospitals, some came from families no longer able to care for them, many came from county poorhouses, and a few came in chains. The asylum, later known as Willard State Hospital, and finally as Willard Psychiatric Center, was in rural upstate New York on the shores of Seneca Lake. Over time, Willard grew to hold several thousand patients. Throughout the twentieth century, the institution changed from an almost self- sufficient, isolated institution to a modern psychiatric hospital. In 1995 New York State closed it for budgetary reasons. The asylum distinguished itself by having a particularly close relationship to nearby communities. Generations of families worked at Willard, and when it closed, many of its recently laid off employees volunteered with the decommissioning. It was during this time that Beverly Courtwright opened a locked attic door and "rediscovered" more than four hundred suitcases belonging to former patients. Thanks to her, and the involvement of Craig Williams from the New York State Museum, the cases were preserved, and a few were eventually displayed in an exhibit at the museum in 2004. The cases are now in the permanent collection of the museum and have been catalogued and preserved. Jon Crispin has photographed at Willard regularly over the past three decades, and in March of 2011 was granted access to the suitcases and began a through documentation of the collection. His main concern throughout this project is to maintain a respect for the integrity of the resident's lives, and he is determined to tell their stories through his photographs.
