The results of this book were obtained with the cutting-edge photoemission technique at highest energy resolution. Due to their fascinating properties for new-generation electronic devices and the challenge of investigating buried regions, the book chiefly focuses on complex oxide interfaces. The crucial feature of exploring buried interfaces is the use of soft X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) operating on the energy range of a few hundred eV to increase the photoelectron mean free path, enabling the photons to penetrate through the top layers – in contrast to conventional ultraviolet (UV)-ARPES techniques. The results presented here, achieved by different research groups around the world, are summarized in a clearly structured way and discussed in comparison with other photoemission spectroscopy techniques and other oxide materials. They are complemented and supported by the most recent theoretical calculations as well as results of complementary experimental techniques including electron transport and inelastic resonant X-ray scattering.

Book excerpt: X-ray Emission Spectroscopy (XES) and Resonant Inverse Photoelectron Spectroscopy (RIPES) have been used to investigate the photon emission associated with the Ce3d5/2 and Ce3d3/2 thresholds. Strong resonant behavior has been observed in the RIPES of Ce Oxide near the 5/2 and 3/2 edges. Inverse Photoelectron Spectroscopy (IPES) and its high energy variant, Bremstrahlung Isochromat Spectroscopy (BIS), are powerful techniques that permit a direct interrogation of the low-lying unoccupied electronic structure of a variety of materials. Despite being handicapped by counting rates that are approximately four orders of magnitude less that the corresponding electron spectroscopies (Photoelectron Spectroscopy, PES, and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy, XPS) both IPES and BIS have a long history of important contributions. Over time, an additional variant of this technique has appeared, where the kinetic energy (KE) of the incoming electron and photon energy (hv) of the emitted electron are roughly the same magnitude as the binding energy of a core level of the material in question. Under these circumstances and in analogy to Resonant Photoelectron Spectroscopy, a cross section resonance can occur, giving rise to Resonant Inverse Photoelectron Spectroscopy or RIPES. Here, we report the observation of RIPES in an f electron system, specifically the at the 3d52 and 3d32 thresholds of Ce Oxide. The resonant behavior of the Ce4f structure at the 3d thresholds has been addressed before, including studies of the utilization of the technique as a probe of electron correlation in a variety of Ce compounds. Interestingly, the first RIPES work on rare earths dates back to 1974, although under conditions which left the state of the surface and near surface regions undefined. Although they did not use the more modern terminology of 'RIPES, ' it is clear that RIPES was actually first performed in 1974 by Liefeld, Burr and Chamberlain on both La and Ce based materials. In these experiments, the La and Ce metallic samples were attached to the anode of an x-ray tube and the x-ray emission characteristics were measured using a two crystal monochromator. The pressure in the x-ray tube was quoted as being below 2 x 10−8 Torr. They did indeed observed resonant behavior at the M? (3d52) and M? (3d32) thresholds. In fact, our results here will confirm the measurements made upon the Ce based sample used in by Liefeld et al. However, the state of the Ce sample surface and near surface regions are quite undefined in the study in Ref 9. For example, the authors suggest that they are probing Ce metal, since they cannot see any evidence of an OK? (1s) XES line. However, they do report the observation of FK? (1s) line, possibly due to the utilization of cerium fluoride in the sample preparation. Later, they tried to address these issues in a new ultrahigh vacuum system. Based upon our results, it is clear that their original sample surface was oxidized, using the word here in its more general context as in having lost electrons to the oxidizing agent, although whether the structure is an oxide or fluoride remains unclear. In any case, the primacy of Liefeld and coworkers in these measurements should be noted. Cerium and cerium oxide have been studied with a variety of spectroscopic techniques under UHV conditions. This includes Bremstrahlung Isochromat Spectroscopy or BIS, Photoelectron Spectroscopy, X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy, Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy and Resonant XES, to name just a few. We will compare our results to those of other spectroscopies.

Book excerpt: Many transition metal oxides (TMOs) show complex physics, ranging from ferroelectricity to magnetism, high-Tc superconductivity and colossal magnetoresistance. The existence of a variety of ground states often occurs as different degrees of freedom (e.g. lattice, charge, spin, orbital) interact to form different competing phases which are quite similar in energy. The capability to epitaxially grow heterostructures of TMOs increased the complexity even more as new phenomena can emerge at the interface. One typical example is the two-dimensional electron system (2DES) at the interface of two insulating oxides, namely LaAlO3/SrTiO3, which shows metal-to-insulator transitions, magnetism or gate-tunable superconductivity. The origin of this thesis was the discovery of a similar 2DES at the bare surface of SrTiO3 fractured in vacuum, making it possible to study its electronic structure by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES).In this thesis, the study of well-prepared surfaces, instead of small fractured facets, results in spectroscopic data showing line widths approaching the intrinsic value. This approach allows a detailed analysis of many-body phenomena like the renormalization of the self-energy due to electron-phonon interaction.Additionally, the understanding of the electronic structure of the 2DES at the surface of SrTiO3(001) was given an additional turn by the surprising discovery of a complex spin texture measured by spin-ARPES. In this thesis data is presented which contradicts these conclusions and discusses possible reasons for the discrepancy. One major motivation of this thesis was the question if and how the electronic structure and the properties of the 2DES can be changed or controlled. In this context, the study of 2DESs at (110) and (111) surface revealed that the electronic band structure of the 2DES (orbital ordering, symmetry of the Fermi surface, effective masses) can be tuned by confining the electrons at different surface orientations of the same material, namely SrTiO3.A major achievement of this thesis is the generalization of the existence of a 2DES in SrTiO3 to many other surfaces and interfaces of TMOs (TiO2 anatase, CaTiO3, BaTiO3) and even simpler oxides already used in modern applications (ZnO). In all these oxides, we identify oxygen vacancies as the origin for the creation of the 2DESs.In anatase and other doped d0 TMOs, both localized and itinerant electrons (2DES) can exist due to oxygen vacancies. Which of the two cases is energetically favorable depends on subtle differences as demonstrated by studying two polymorphs of the same material (anatase and rutile). In CaTiO3, the oxygen octahedron around the Ti ion is slightly tilted. This symmetry breaking results in the mixing of different d-orbitals demonstrating again why and how the electronic structure of the 2DES can be altered. In BaTiO3, the creation of a 2DES results in the coexistence of the two, usually mutual exclusive, phenomena of ferroelectricity and metallicity in the same material by spatially separating the two. Moreover, this work demonstrates that the 2DES also exists in ZnO which is - compared to the Ti-based oxides - rather a conventional semiconductor as the orbital character of the itinerant electrons is of s and not d-type.The main result of this thesis is the demonstration of a simple and versatile technique for the creation of 2DESs by evaporating Al on oxide surfaces. A redox reaction between metal and oxide results in a 2DES at the interface of the oxidized metal and the reduced oxide. In this thesis the study of such interfacial 2DESs was limited to photoemission studies in ultra high vacuum. However, this technique opens up the possibility to study 2DESs in functional oxides in ambient conditions by e.g. transport techniques, and might be an important step towards cost-efficient mass production of 2DESs in oxides for future applications.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetals have linearly dispersive 3D Dirac nodes where the conduction band and valence band are connected. They have isolated 3D Dirac nodes in the whole Brillouin zone and can be viewed as a 3D counterpart of graphene. Recent theoretical calculations and experimental results indicate that the 3D Dirac semimetal state can be realized in a simple stoichiometric compound A 3 Bi ( A = Na, K, Rb). Here we report comprehensive high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements on the two cleaved surfaces, (001) and (100), of Na3 Bi. On the (001) surface, by comparison with theoretical calculations, we provide a proper assignment of the observed bands, and in particular, pinpoint the band that is responsible for the formation of the three-dimensional Dirac cones. We observe clear evidence of 3D Dirac cones in the three-dimensional momentum space by directly measuring on the k x – k y plane and by varying the photon energy to get access to different out-of-plane k z s. In addition, we reveal new features around the Brillouin zone corners that may be related with surface reconstruction. On the (100) surface, our ARPES measurements over a large momentum space raise an issue on the selection of the basic Brillouin zone in the (100) plane. We directly observe two isolated 3D Dirac nodes on the (100) surface. We observe the signature of the Fermi-arc surface states connecting the two 3D Dirac nodes that extend to a binding energy of ∼150 meV before merging into the bulk band. Our observations constitute strong evidence on the existence of the Dirac semimetal state in Na3 Bi that are consistent with previous theoretical and experimental work. In addition, our results provide new information to clarify on the nature of the band that forms the 3D Dirac cones, on the possible formation of surface reconstruction of the (001) surface, and on the issue of basic Brillouin zone selection for the (100) surface.

Book excerpt: X-ray photoemission and x-ray photoabsorption were used to study the composition and the electronic structure of ytterbium doped strontium fluoroapatite (Yb:S-FAP). High resolution photoemission measurements on the valence band electronic structure was used to evaluate the density of occupied states of this fluoroapatite. Element specific density of unoccupied electronic states in Yb:S-FAP were probed by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the Yb 4d (N{sub 4,5}-edge), Sr 3d (M{sub 4,5}-edge), P 2p (L{sub 2,3}-edge), F 1s and O 1s (K-edges) absorption edges. These results provide the first measurements of the electronic structure and surface chemistry of this material.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SrTiO3 superconductivity has been studied for decades and still attracts much attention due to its uniqueness. The properties of superconductivity in SrTiO3 are two-sided; some aspects are conventional and others are not. Its carrier density is extremely low and outside of the adiabatic condition in the conventional BCS (Bardeen-Copper-Schrie er) theory for superconductivity in metals. Despite longstanding query, probing its electronic structure has been a challenge because of the large surface depletion layer, especially for the low carrier density regime. In this work, we examine the electronic structure of SrTiO3 for the entire superconducting dome probed by planar tunneling spectroscopy. The suppression of the problematic depletion layer was achieved by using a polar oxide (LaAlO3) as a tunnel barrier. The atomically precise band engineering enabled the construction of a high-quality tunnel junction in electron-doped SrTiO3, which produced the high-resolution tunneling spectra. The evolution of tunneling spectra demonstrates that superconducting electrons are weakly coupled to pairing bosons while normal state electrons are strongly coupled to the longitudinal phonons. The transverse optic soft phonon is suggested as a possible candidate for pairing to explain this discrepancy in the adiabatic condition. How the transverse mode can couple to electrons in this inversion symmetric system still remains unclear, and this can be a unique feature in this incipient ferroelectric system. Furthermore, the physics of SrTiO3 tunneling devices are discussed in this thesis. First, the origins and control of the depletion width in electron-doped SrTiO3 were studied. In addition, LaAlO3, which is used to suppress the depletion width, can accumulate electrons at the interface with electron-doped SrTiO3. The detection and control of electron accumulation are presented, and these are essential to obtain high-quality tunnel junctions to probe the low-density SrTiO3 of interest.

Book excerpt: Physics at Surfaces is a unique graduate-level introduction to the physics and chemical physics of solid surfaces, and atoms and molecules that interact with solid surfaces. A subject of keen scientific inquiry since the last century, surface physics emerged as an independent discipline only in the late 1960s as a result of the development of ultra-high vacuum technology and high speed digital computers. With these tools, reliable experimental measurements and theoretical calculations could at last be compared. Progress in the last decade has been truly striking. This volume provides a synthesis of the entire field of surface physics from the perspective of a modern condensed matter physicist with a healthy interest in chemical physics. The exposition intertwines experiment and theory whenever possible, although there is little detailed discussion of technique. This much-needed text will be invaluable to graduate students and researchers in condensed matter physics, physical chemistry and materials science working in, or taking graduate courses in, surface science.

Book excerpt: A systematic study has been conducted of the resonant behavior of the valence band photoelectron spectrum of MoS2 for hv=26-70 eV, spanning the Mo 4p to 4d transition region. A broad Fano-like resonance appears at 42 eV in the constant initial state (CIS) intensity plot of the dz2 peak near the valence band maximum (2 eV binding energy(BE)), confirming its predominantly Mo 4d character. A second shoulder on the higher hv side of the maximum in the dz2 CIS intensity plot is suggested to result from transitions to unoccupied states in the 5(sp) band 10 eV above EF, by comparison with a partial yield spectrum and previous inverse photoemission data. The region of the valence band in the range 3-4.5 eV BE also exhibits resonant behavior, indicating Mo 4d character, although somewhat less than for the dz2 peak. A feature at 30 eV in the CIS intensity plot for the 5-7 eV BE range could not be definitely assigned in this study, but may be due to a resonance between direct photoemission and a process involving absorption and autoionization of electronic states that contain Mo 5s and 5p character.
