Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central idea of sustainability in the modern world is intricate and ever-changing. Closely related to the realm of finance and socioeconomic discussion, the phrase “sustainable impact finance” has become increasingly popular among bankers, practitioners, financial analysts, investors and the relevant experts seeking an impactful connection between the best financing mechanisms or tools and sustainable development related investments or projects. This book opens up the discussion by offering a Shari’ah-compliance perspective. It is a primer on how Islam addresses and offers solutions to the challenges facing us within the spirit of maqasid al-Shari’ah, among others, in tackling poverty, food supply, health and well-being, quality education, reducing inequalities, responsible consumption and production and climate action. It discusses the connection between Islamic sustainable finance and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and explains the strategic action-plan of Islamic banks towards achieving Islamic sustainable finance. The book considers the relevant policies and regulations, evaluating the role of regulators, discussing jurisprudential solutions and focusing on the role of Islamic banking standards in relation to Islamic sustainable finance. Further, it explores the issue of risk mitigation and the effective role of Takaful. It presents a practical case study from the banking industry in Malaysia, which evaluates the carbon footprint of bank loans and climate change risk mitigation. Finally, it highlights sustainable finance innovations in an Islamic concept. The book will appeal to advanced students, researchers and scholars of Islamic banking and finance, as well as those concerned with environmental social governance and Sustainable Development Goals research. Regulators, policy makers and Shari’ah-compliant practitioners will also find it to be a useful guide.

Book excerpt: Environmental protection and sustainability fits in nicely with the Islamic finance agenda that seeks to enhance the general welfare of society. Protection of the planet and the environment, climate management and adaptation, as organizational goals are clearly in conformity with the goals of the Shariah as well as with the SDGs. This paper takes the argument further and seeks to demonstrate how Islamic finance can significantly contribute to the global search for climate finance solutions. Islamic social funds can potentially play a significant role in absorbing the incremental costs with clean technologies where subsidies are not forthcoming to absorb the same. For zakat funds to be used for the purpose, an additional condition need to be met, i.e. the beneficiaries must be poor. The institution of waqf, along with zakat and Sadaqa, can certainly play a role in coping with humanitarian crises resulting from climate change. Awqaf like foundations may directly engage in provision of goods and services related to mitigation and adaptation. Awqaf may also be dedicated to research and development and towards increasing consumer awareness and stronger support of action to mitigate climate change. Similar to SRI Funds, the Islamic Green Funds and similar to Green Bonds, the Islamic Green Sukuk can contribute significantly to the agenda of climate change.

Book excerpt: The book is a collection of chapters discussing the Sustainable Development Goals in the broader context of Islamic finance along with mapping the SDGs with Maqasid Al-Shariah. It provides a framework for both Muslim and non-Muslim countries to develop a sustainable economy which encompasses not only the concept of the welfare state but also supports development-related activities, ensures financial inclusion through equal distribution of wealth and alleviation of poverty, and protects the overall environmental and ecological system. More specifically, this book explores various aspects of Islamic finance in relation to parameters of SDGs; restructuring of Islamic finance and connecting its dots in the light of SDGs; Islamic perspective on ESG and ecological quality; interest-free tools and modernization of Islamic financial institutions for sustainable development and economic stability; and the role of Islamic finance in infrastructure-related development activities. Consistent with the view that SDGs are embedded within the theme of Islamic finance, this book is specifically designed to meet the needs of key regulatory institutions, academic scholars, and industry practitioners both in the field of Islamic finance and sustainable finance.

This necessitates crowding-in private sources to meet financing, efficiency, and technology gaps. However, a lack of bankable projects is a major hurdle. This publication suggests one possible innovative financing approach. The Green Finance Catalyzing Facility (GFCF) proposes a blended finance framework for governments and development entities to better leverage development funds for risk mitigation, generate a pipeline of bankable green infrastructure projects, and directly catalyze private finance. The GFCF provides useful inputs for the current debate on mainstreaming green finance into country financial systems.

Book excerpt: A leading Islamic finance banker sheds light on an industry with growing global influence: “A superb introduction to a fascinating subject” (Financial Times) A trillion-dollar financial industry has revolutionized the global economy. Governments and corporations across the Islamic world have turned to finance that complies with Shari‘a law in order to fund economic growth. Even in the West, Islamic finance became an important alternative source of funding when the conventional finance industry was reeling from the effects of the financial crisis. From its origins in the seventh century, Islamic finance has sought to develop core ethical principles that are based in the foundations of Islam and Shari‘a. But with an increasing Western interest, is it able to remain true to the principles of its faith? Can it maintain its ideals of social justice? Or is Islamic finance guilty of the very dangers it seeks to avoid. In Heaven's Bankers, Harris Irfan, one of the world's leading Islamic finance bankers, gives unparalleled insight into the heart of this secretive industry. From his personal experience of working with leading bankers, scholars and lawyers, he debunks the myths of Islamic banking, analyzes its greatest deals, and looks to the future of a system that has reprioritized the very nature of money itself.

Book excerpt: This work is a practical and commercial guide to the fundamental principles of Islamic finance and their application to Islamic finance transactions. Islamic finance is a rapidly expanding, global industry and this book is designed to provide a practical treatment of the subject. It includes discussion and analysis of the negotiation and structure involved in Islamic finance transactions, with relevant case studies, structure diagrams and precedent material supporting the commentary throughout. An introductory section describes the theoretical background and explains the principles (and their sources) of Islamic law which underpin Islamic finance practices, providing an important backdrop to the work as a whole. The work also considers the role of Shariah supervisory boards, Islamic financial institutions and the relevance of accounting approaches. The work adopts an international perspective to reflect the pan-global nature of the industry and accepted practices, with the aim to bring together different schools of thought applied in international Islamic finance transactions. It also highlights any regional differences in accepted practice by reviewing the position in the Gulf states, Asia, the UK and Europe and the USA. The second part of the book concentrates on Islamic financial law in practice and begins with a section on financial techniques. This section explains the basic requirements for Islamic finance contracts both in terms of the underlying asset types and also both the applicability and acceptability of the underlying asset. There is a full discussion of the various types of contractual models such as Mudaraba (trustee finance), Musharaka (partnership or joint venture), Murabaha (sale of goods), and Sukuk (participation securities: coupons etc). The nascent area of Takaful (insurance) is also covered as are matters specific to the important field of project and asset finance.

Book excerpt: A practical and accessible guide to Islamic finance that helps demystify the differences with conventional banking, enabling practitioners to develop Sharia compliant products for customers. The Islamic Finance industry is estimated to be worth $1.2 trillion and is growing globally at over 10% per year. Mastering Islamic Finance will give practitioners an understanding of Islamic finance, from the basic techniques, through to advanced applications. Helping to demystify and clarify the differences with conventional banking, it will enable practitioners to develop Sharia compliant products for customers. According to Sharia law there are strict rules on how financial services and products can be designed; in Islamic Finance money cannot make money and the subject of the finance must be an asset or a verifiable, real trade or business activity. Sharia compliant financial instruments have been devised to enable Muslims to abide by the principles of Islam and still make the most of their money. Mastering Islamic Finance will equip readers with an understanding of Islamic financial instruments so they can sensibly apply them in practice. For each instrument there is a definition of the concept and how it differs from its equivalent in conventional banking. There are also examples and case studies to highlight practical applications. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that focusing on the green economy and green finance is essential to counteract the catastrophic, socio-economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Further, while numerous research initiatives in the context of the green economy and/or finance have been observed in different parts of the world, to date, no comprehensive work has been published on the topic of green finance in relation to the discipline of Shari’ah. This timely book provides a comprehensive guide and offers practical solutions to the core issues of green finance within the principles of Maqasid al-Shari’ah. It contends that Islamic green finance serves to promote global financial stability and mitigate the financial risks associated with climate change and environmental degradation: by integrating Islamic finance principles with sustainable and environmentally friendly practices; by encouraging ethical investments and prioritising long-term social and environmental benefits; and by redirecting capital towards sustainable projects and fostering a more sustainable and inclusive financial system. Islamic green finance’s emphasis on transparency, governance, risk-sharing, and responsible investing helps lessen systemic risks and supports the transition towards a more stable and sustainable global financial landscape. The book’s holistic approach to green finance in Maqasid al-Shari’ah aims to ensure that financial actions align with Islamic principles and help create a more sustainable and responsible economic system. The book is a detailed reference, which sheds light on the pressing issues of our time. It encompasses various aspects of Islamic economics and serves as a guide to implementing green financing in accordance with Islamic principles and ethics, and as such, it will appeal to academics, researchers, students and policymakers alike.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an overview of the practice of Islamic finance and the historical roots that define its modes of operation. The focus of the book is analytical and forward-looking. It shows that Islamic finance exists mainly as a form of rent-seeking legal-arbitrage. In every aspect of finance - from personal loans to investment banking, and from market structure to corporate governance - Islamic finance aims to replicate in Islamic forms the substantive functions of contemporary financial instruments, markets, and institutions. By attempting to replicate the substance of contemporary financial practice using pre-modern contract forms, Islamic finance has arguably failed to serve the objectives of Islamic law. This book proposes refocusing Islamic finance on substance rather than form. This approach would entail abandoning the paradigm of 'Islamization' of every financial practice. It would also entail reorienting the brand-name of Islamic finance to emphasize issues of community banking, micro-finance, and socially responsible investment.
