Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Function and Organization of University Presses: An Address Years ago when there was ad mittedly much force in the jibe that a university press was an organization whose function was to publish works which no one would read, there was, quite naturally, as little general interest in its organization as there was in its function. Today, when the Various associations affiliated with many of our American universi ties under the general title of uni versity presses have fairly chal lenged attention everywhere by the results of their activities, there is very general interest not only in their purpose but also in the efficiency of the methods by which they seek to achieve this purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University Organization The function of the leading English Universities, then, seems to be to hold examinations and confer degrees, leaving the teach ing to be done by the private tutors attached to the several Col leges. This system is dependent upon the immense endowments of the particular Colleges, and the numerous Fellowships con nected with them, which yield the fortunate holders incomes of from one to two thousand dollars per annum.1 Such prizes un questionably induce hard study, and are the rewards of most rigid examinations; but a system of instruction based on such stimuli is only possible where wealth has already furnished the necessary stimuli. Book excerpt: Excerpt from University of the State of New York: Origin, History and Present Organization New York has a system of education which is complex and without theoretic unity, a system in fact without system. In its practical work ing, however, there is a real unity. Like the English constitution it is the result of historic growth, and the practical gifts of the people have made possible the harmonious, efficient management of what would seem like an ill contrived machine, were it the contrivance of a single mind or a single legislature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New York University: Its Organization and Equipment Meanwhile, the Committee had appointed a sub - committee to invite men of eminence in higher education to attend an educational convention in New York, October 20-23, 1830. This was not only for the purpose of obtaining the benefit of the views of educational experts in the establish ment of the proposed university, but also for the purpose Of promoting the common cause Of education throughout the nation. The meetings of this convocation were held in the Common Council Chamber of the City, and representatives of a dozen different American institutions of higher educa tion were present. Many themes of educational importance were discussed, including the reasons for the supremacy of European universities, the different conditions existing in the United States and in Europe, the proper curriculum for a college, the question of graduate study and of a school for the training of teachers. All agreed with George Bancroft, that New York City Offered an excellent field for the study of medicine and of law. Henry] E. Dwight of New Haven said: The friends of literature throughout the Union are looking with intense interest toward this University. AS our population becomes more dense, there must be a greater division of mental as well as physical labor, and to meet the wants of the country, our literary institutions must be remodeled or new ones must be established. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Committee on Organization: Presented to the Trustees of the Cornell University, October 21st, 1866 Thirdly, great good would result to large portions of the pub lic in general, which under ordinary circumstances would not avail itself of the ordinary privileges of the University. It is believed that such special courses of lectures by distinguished men would attract large numbers of citizens for brief terms, resulting in good to them and to society at large, by an immediate extension of the activity of the University among the matured minds and men already in active life. Fourthly, great good would result to the University itself. It would enable the University to make a division of labor, selecting members of the Resident Faculty, for their energy and working ability; selecting men who have a name to make and ability to make it, and not selecting men for the resident professors - for the hard work of the University - who have attained eminence and so outlived their willingness to do hard work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Organization: Delivered in the Course on Industrial Organization in the Graduate School of Business Administration of Harvard University As an industry or business begins to involve large size, great numbers, and complexity, organization becomes necessary simply for the direction, control, and handling of affairs, quite aside from any question of direct economy. It becomes necessary to set off groups of workers, to divide responsibilities, duties, and processes, so that affairs may be kept within the scope and ability of those who are directing the undertaking. A virtue has, however, been made of this necessity for division, because it becomes possible, by dividing duties and functions, to conserve special skill, ability, and use, and to direct all effort into definite paths, to which it becomes accustomed and thus gains in efficiency. It is of little importance how the great growth in industries has come, - whether a realization of the benefits that arise with division of labor and conserving of skill induced us to gain size so that these advantages might be brought into play, or whether size came first and the advantages were a fortuitous accompaniment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Universities of Canada: Their History and Organization In the report which follows, I have endeavored to set forth, somewhat fully, the history of all the Universities of Canada. Although the Legislature of the Province has mainly to deal with education as directed by the Provincial University, still for the last twenty years it has very properly recognized the Degree of any University in the British Dominions for all purposes of higher education. The ties which politically bind the various Provinces of Confederation and the most distant colonies of the Empire together are thus duplicated educationally and so far with the most satisfactory results. The graduates of the Universities of Ontario and the rest of Canada, as well as the graduates of the great seats of learning at the heart of the Empire, vie with each other in contributing to the intellectual development of the Provinces. On this account it will be the more interesting to know how such Universities are organized and the courses of study required of their alumni.viii. In the report which follows, the resume of the organiza tion of Oxford and of the Scottish Universities will, I hope, he found interesting and instructive. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketch: Of the History and the Present Organization of Brown University During a portion of the revolutionary period, from 1777 to 1782, the College was disbanded, and a gap occurs in its history. Some of the students entered the army; others completed their studies elsewhere. The dormitories and recitation-rooms were surrendered to the use of the State militia, and to the sick and wounded of our French allies. In 1786, President Manning, whose graceful deportment, elegant scholarship, and wise and Christian character had commended him to all his fellow - citizens, was appointed to represent the State of Rhode Island in the Congress of the United States. In 1791, he died, lamented by all classes, and by none more than by the graduates of the College, of which he was the real founder, and which owed to him its guid ance and its prosperity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the American Association of University Women, 1881-1931 It may be that unsympathetic readers of this volume will feel that the organization and individual members are too highly praised. One has only to turn to the written records of the Association records both national and local to feel assured that the criticism is unjust. The universal testimony seems to be that college and university women get their in spiration at the beginning of an undertaking or at moments of discouragement either from their Alma Mater or from other college and university women with whom, in branches of the Association, they work shoulder to shoulder. It is hard to estimate inspiration and perseverance, and to weigh actual achievement in the scales, but the three hundred branch his tories and the twelve state division histories, together with records of national and local committees, can be cited for all facts this volume contains.
