Book excerpt: General Electric achieved spectacular results during Welch's leadership, but the question is: Could this style be applied to any company and get the same results as GE? Can we say that the Jack Welch style could be "universal"? Is it really the "magic recipe" that would make any company profitable? Is the success of GE is attributed to the style of management adopted by Welch? Is it a style that could be applied in companies other than GE? If yes, does it work well, and in which conditions? Is it a style that is adapted to companies in difficult situation? And finally, Should Jack Welch be considered a role style for this new generation of business leaders, or will they need different skills and different management styles in managing their companies? In this thesis, we will try to answer those questions about Jack Welch and his style of management. We will study five cases of companies that applied the Jack Welch model of management. This thesis is split into three main parts. The first part describes the Jack Welch's style of management and his style of leadership outlined in chapters: The strategic approach, the organizational approach and the human resource approach. The second part is about case studies along with methodology and detailed analysis. The final part of the thesis consists of critics of this style of management along with recommendations for managers seeking a style of management for high performance.
