Book excerpt: "In 1933 an act of Congress created the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) to counter the hopelessness felt by millions of young men in the depth of the Great Depression. These young men (age 18 to 25) were set to the task of restoring land wasted by over farming, clear cut timbering, and erosion. The results of their efforts are recreational resources such as the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. In this study, the establishment of the CCC in North Carolina is discussed, camp life is recounted in great detail, and the accomplishments of the Corps are examined. Separate chapters present the involvement of African Americans and the Cherokee in North Carolina's CCC efforts"--Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BETWEEN 1933 and 1942, nearly 200,000 young African-Americans participated in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), one of Franklin D. Roosevelt's most successful New Deal agencies. In an effort to correct the lack of historical attention paid to the African-American contribution to the CCC, Olen Cole, Jr., examines their participation in the Corps as well as its impact on them. Though federal legislation establishing the CCC held that no bias of "race, color, or creed" was to be tolerated, Cole demonstrates that the very presence of African-Americans in the CCC, as well as the placement of the segregated CCC work camps in predominantly white California communities, became significant sources of controversy. Cole assesses community resistance to all-black camps, as well as the conditions of the state park camps, national forest camps, and national park camps where African-American work companies in California were stationed. He also evaluates the educational and recreational experiences of African-American CCC participants, their efforts to combat racism, and their contributions to the protection and maintenance of California's national forests and parks. Perhaps most important, Cole's use of oral histories gives voice to individual experiences: former Corps members discuss the benefits of employment, vocational training, and character development as well as their experiences of community reaction to all-black CCC camps. An important and much neglected chapter in American history, Cole's study should interest students of New Deal politics, state and national park history, and the African-American experience in the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Palo Duro Canyon in the Panhandle to Lake Corpus Christi on the coast, from Balmorhea in far West Texas to Caddo Lake near the Louisiana border, the state parks of Texas are home not only to breathtaking natural beauty, but also to historic buildings and other structures built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) during the 1930s. In Texas State Parks and the CCC: The Legacy of the Civilian Conservation Corps, Cynthia Brandimarte has mined the organization’s archives, as well as those of the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and the Texas Department of Transportation, to compile a rich visual record of how this New Deal program left an indelible stamp on many of the parks we still enjoy today. Some fifty thousand men were enrolled in the CCC in Texas. Between 1933 and 1942, they constructed trails, cabins, concession buildings, bathhouses, dance pavilions, a hotel, and a motor court. Before they arrived, the state’s parklands consisted of fourteen parks on about 800 acres, but by the end of World War II, CCC workers had helped create a system of forty-eight parks on almost 60,000 acres throughout Texas. Accompanied by many never-published images that reveal all aspects of the CCC in Texas, from architectural plans to camp life, Texas State Parks and the CCC covers the formation and development of the CCC and its design philosophy; the building of the parks and the daily experiences of the workers; the completion and management of the parks in the first decades after the war; and the ongoing process of maintaining and preserving the iconic structures that define the rustic, handcrafted look of the CCC. With a call for greater appreciation of these historical resources, especially in light of the recent Bastrop fire, which threatened one of the state’s most popular CCC-era destinations, Brandimarte profiles twenty-nine parks, providing a descriptive history of each and information on its CCC company, the dates of CCC activity, and the CCC-built structures still existing within the park.

Book excerpt: In the literature dealing with the Civilian Conservation Corps, South Carolina does not figure prominently in most histories of the Great Depression story. That neglect should be corrected! It is important to recognize the ways in which racism has permeated our society, sometimes blatant and sometimes subtle. While the focus is South Carolina, the particulars are representative of what happened in CCC camps across the nation. As one of the most popular facets of President Franklin D. Roosevelts New Deal, the activities and antics of the CCC boys deserve attention. My primary purpose in writing this book is to assist teachers and librarians and their upper level elementary and high school students in understanding this crucial but understudied era in South Carolinas history. These readers and a more general South Carolina audience could identify with a nearby place or make a family connection.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's the Great Depression, and times are hard. Children are starving. Families are scraping by on government handouts and the kindness of strangers. There is no work to be had and no money to be earned. Teenager Jarek Sokolowski and his brother take action to save their loved ones--they apply for jobs in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Fires in the Wilderness chronicles the journey of a pair of Polish boys from Grand Rapids, Michigan, in 1934. After some training, they are shipped far from home to a work camp in the wilds of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The friends take on backbreaking jobs that leave them bruised and blistered. To make matters worse, their work leader is a cruel bully who loves to stir up trouble. When wildfires sweep across the northern wilderness, the CCC boys are pressed into duty. As the fire grows out of control, several boys find themselves trapped by walls of flame and Jarek is faced with a terrible choice. Through their work and struggles, the Civilian Conservation Corps boys learn hard lessons about life and the importance of character, teamwork, and leadership.Fires in the Wilderness is an inspiring story that provides readers with a peek into the past through the eyes of an immigrant boy.

Book excerpt: Sypolt has compiled the first comprehensive national bibliography since 1943 of the Civilian Conservation Corps— of which he himself is a former member. Over 2,000 sources are meticulously cited, making this work an essential one-stop reference guide for those interested in learning more about the institution which has, since its humble 1933 inception, provided jobs for many unemployed youth, planted billions of trees, built many miles of trails, and created numerous pavilions, picnic areas, lakes, and dams across America. Practical sub-divisions within the book aid in making research efficient for the reader, so that he or she may look up sources directly pertaining to his or her interest— whether that be the role of minorities in the Corps or seeing what has been written about CCC Camp Libraries— instead of having to wade through countless irrelevant works. Civilian Conservation Corps spans more than just the traditional sources of information; incorporated into this research guide are all types of literature, training guides, and other media, including: Films; Photographs; Maps; Internet Resources; Oral Histories; Museums. The author's primary purpose in compiling this edition is to direct scholars, researchers, federal and state parks, forests, and preservation personnel and historic preservationists in their research and to point them in the direction of the vast literature pertaining to the topic.
