Book excerpt: The eight articles first appeared as volume 6 (no date) of Mineral processing and extractive metallurgy review. They review new methods of recovery for gold, and to some extent, silver, focus on the particular challenges of extraction from carbonaceous ores and from various sulfide-bearing ore, and the treatment of refractory gold ore, and discuss high-temperature and biological oxidation, high- temperature chlorination, and removing metals from leach liquor. Book excerpt: Current trends in mining are driving the demand for subsurface extraction technologies with low surface impacts that protect surface and ground water. Moreover, the necessity for sustainable mineral extraction technologies has increased as regulatory restrictions and technical challenges to traditional mining grow with production from deeper and deeper remaining metal resources. This book provides a state-of-the-art synopsis of in situ metal recovery and remediation technologies based on both research and commercial projects. In situ recovery uses fluid-based metal dissolution and recovery to extract one or more commodities from a largely intact rock mass using similar processes that create ore deposits. The fluid is circulated through ore by gravity and/or pumps using injection and recovery wells. A processing facility is usually established at the surface of the operation to extract the commodity of interest. The barren fluid is then recirculated back into the recovery circuit. In situ remediation uses similar wellfield technology and chemical processes to stabilize metal contaminants by injecting agents that form stable solids or less toxic species when combined with a contaminant. The fluid depleted in the stabilizing agent is then pumped back to the surface and regenerated. In situ mining or recovery has been successfully applied to several commodities, including uranium, sulfur, evaporites, and copper, which have favorable chemical properties and deposit types for in situ recovery.

Book excerpt: First published in 1998. This book offers a wealth of information on the rapidly expanding field of solution mining: yhe extraction of materials from the earth by leaching and fluid recovery. This is an introductory text for students and professional engineers that is comprehensive and emphases current practice and theory. Percolation leaching of fragmented ground is covered, as well as true and modified in situ teaching. Solution mining of gold, copper and uranium ores, several slats extracted from evaporates and brines, and sulfur are discussed. Mineral teaching chemistry and kinetics, hydrology (including flow equations for various wellfields and other fluid recovery systems), environmental containment and solution mining simulation models are also included.

Book excerpt: Metal usage by humans is vigorously increasing day-by-day. Since the turn of the new millennium, human needs have mainly depended on different types of metal. Ores and minerals are the primary natural sources of metals. In order to process metals, manufacturers require certain methods and technology. This reference book provides six widely used varieties of metal synthesizing and the chapters are contributed by internationally reputed professors and researchers. Chapter One focuses on biomineralization. Biomineralisation is an art of nature; it is an important process where organisms produce hierarchical mineral structures with diverse functions for their survival. This process happens through the self-organisation of organic and inorganic molecules under ambient conditions, resulting in highly structured materials with remarkable physical and chemical properties. Chapter Two refers to the application of biological methods in mineral processing. Chapter Three describes monazite mineral processing; monazite is the main resource of rare earth metals such as uranium and thorium. In this chapter, monazite mining, beneficiation and metallurgical routes are discussed. Chapter Four defines the hydrometallurgy of rare earth metals, including scandium. Chapter Five deals with ore extraction technology through computer aided engineering techniques. The final chapter concludes with the processing technology used to treat primary and secondary sources for base metal recovery.
