Book Synopsis Multiplex and Multilevel Networks by : Stefano Battiston
Download or read book Multiplex and Multilevel Networks written by Stefano Battiston and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The science of networks represented a substantial change in the way we see natural and technological phenomena. Now we have a better understanding that networks are, in most cases, networks of networks or multi-layered networks. This book provides a summary of the research done during one of the largest and most multidisciplinary projects in network science and complex systems (Multiplex). The science of complex networks originated from the empirical evidence that most of the structures of systems such as the internet, sets of protein interactions, and collaboration between people, share (at least qualitatively) common structural properties. This book examines how properties of networks that interact with other networks can change dramatically. The authors show that, dependent on the properties of links that interconnect two or more networks, we may derive different conclusions about the function and the possible vulnerabilities of the overall system of networks. This book presents a series of novel theoretical results together with their applications, providing a comprehensive overview of the field.

Book Synopsis American Crisis, Southern Solutions by : Anthony P. Dunbar
Download or read book American Crisis, Southern Solutions written by Anthony P. Dunbar and published by NewSouth Books. This book was released on 2008-01-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Editor Anthony Dunbar and more than a dozen Southern writers, historians, business and labor-watchers, and philosophers reexamine some of the issues raised in the 2004 collection of essays, Where We Stand, Voices of Southern Dissent, which warned of the dangers of reelecting George W. Bush and of white Southerners unquestioningly casting their political lot with fundamentalism and conservatism. In this new collection, those essayists and new ones offer thoughtful, provocative suggestions for a fresh path America should follow in governance, international affairs, the environment, workplace security, freedom of the press, and immigration reform. They present "Southern Solutions," based upon southern experience, to a nation that has drifted far off course. Economist and former U.S. Secretary of Labor Ray Marshall anchors the book, and editor Dunbar writes the introduction. Jason Berry, Charles Bussey, Dan Carter, Danny Duncan Collum, Doug Davis, Leslie W. Dunbar, Glenn A. Feldman, Dan Pollitt, Susan Ford-Wiltshire, and Frye Gailiard are among the contributors.

Book Synopsis The United Nations World Water Development Report 3 by : World Water Assessment Programme
Download or read book The United Nations World Water Development Report 3 written by World Water Assessment Programme and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-05-23 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Nations World Water Development Report, published every three years, is a comprehensive review providing an authoritative picture of the state of the world's freshwater resources. It offers best practices as well as in-depth theoretical analyses to help stimulate ideas and actions for better stewardship in the water sector. It is the only report of its kind, resulting from the collaboration and contributions of the 26 UN agencies, commissions, program, funds, secretariats and conventions that have a significant role in addressing global water concerns. The news media are full of talk of crises - in climate change, energy and food and troubled financial markets. These crises are linked to each other and to water resources management. Unresolved, they may lead to increasing political insecurity and conflict. Water is required to meet our fundamental needs and rising living standards and to sustain our planet‘s fragile ecosystems. Pressures on the resource come from a growing and mobile population, social and cultural change, economic development and technological change. Adding complexity and risk is climate change, with impacts on the resource as well as on the sources of pressure on water. The challenges, though substantial, are not insurmountable. The Report shows how some countries have responded. Progress in providing drinking water is heartening, with the Millennium Development Goal target on track in most regions. But other areas remain unaddressed, and after decades of inaction, the problems in water systems are enormous and will worsen if left unattended. Leaders in the water sector can inform decisions outside their domain and manage water resources to achieve agreed socioeconomic objectives and environmental integrity. Leaders in government, the private sector and civil society determine these objectives and allocate human and financial resources to meet them. Recognizing this responsibility, they must act now!
