Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Register of the United States Naval Academy, 1967-1968: One Hundred Twenty Third Academic Year The United States Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland, is the undergraduate __college of the U. S. Navy. Its primary mission is to prepare young men for careers as officers in the U. S. Navy or the U. S. Marine Corps. The Academy is accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, . And graduates of its 4-year course are awarded the Bachelor of Science degree. Under the Academy's recent validating, elective, minors, and majors programs advanced undergraduate courses have become a reality for every midshipman. The basic curriculum consists of a core curriculum of 36 courses (two during second class summer) plus an elected minors program of six courses. A minimum of 144 semester hours is required for graduation. The core curriculum is designed to give a midshipman the essential education imam, mathematics, engineering, social science and the humanities, and in naval science that he will need to perform effectively as an officer in the Naval Service. Completion of the minor contributes breadth _of understanding in a field of particular interest to. The midshipman. Every midshipman is required to complete the courses of the core curriculum (or validate comparable college-level work) and to select= and complete a minor. Courses for which a midshipman is able to validate previous work may be omitted and electives substituted.
