Book excerpt: Green Economy and Sustainable Development Vision, Concept and Applications The current global trend revolves around reevaluating the foundations of development for nations by focusing on the evolving challenges faced by populations. This includes the exacerbation of unemployment, rising poverty rates because of climate change, successive financial crises, and the ensuing food crises. It's a time to confront these crises by reconsidering the fundamental pillars that support economic growth and the developmental policies associated with it across various nations. This unequivocally underscores the imperative to advance concepts related to what it termed the "Green Economy." This is one of the most crucial means to ease the spread of poverty and achieve sustainable development, as per the definition put forth by the United Nations Environment Programme, which states that "the green economy is an economy that leads to the improvement of human well-being and the long-term reduction of inequality, without exposing future generations to important environmental risks and ecological scarcity." The significance of the green economy lies in its essential role in establishing a connection between sustainable development, encompassing economic, social, and environmental facets. It facilitates a positive transition in the requisite processes of production, patterns of consumption, waste, and pollution management. It aids in controlling the reckless utilization of natural resources, energy sources, and the ensuing emissions. The ultimate aim is to transform all these elements into a more efficient and diversified economy, preserving the environment and fostering the creation of dignified employment opportunities for successive generations worldwide. It works towards promoting sustainable trade, curbing the prevalence of poverty, enhancing levels of social justice, and ensuring a fair distribution of income. Several reasons support the adoption of the green economy in sustainable development, especially in emerging economies (developing countries).

Book excerpt: The report is compiled by UNEP's Green Economy Initiative in collaboration with economists and experts worldwide. It demonstrates that the greening of economies is not generally a drag on growth but rather a new engine of growth; that it is a net generator of decent jobs, and that it is also a vital strategy for the elimination of persistent poverty. The report also seeks to motivate policy makers to create the enabling conditions for increased investments in a transition to a green economy.

Book excerpt: This book treats different themes which are intrinsically linked and of extreme significance for the entire global community such as the necessity to cut emissions and transit toward a more sustainable and green economy. The content extends to the urgency to shape a new multilateralism and reinforce cooperation to achieve global goods, where the environment comes first, to the green finance which will play a fundamental role for the green transition paying particular attention to the United Nations' 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.A particular emphasis is given to the so-called 'Dual Circulation Strategy' (DCS) which is presently becoming the priority not only for China but also for the rest of the global community. Due to the uncertainties caused by the pandemic and other external factors, China has substituted GDP growth with the so-called six guarantees (liù bǎo 六保) which represent the six fundamental aspects of the economy and society that according to the central government must receive priority attention, and protection in economic policy to ensure economic recovery. China also introduced the concept of an 'ecological civilization' (shēngtài wénmíng 生态文明) through green, low-carbon economic development. One of the targets is to achieve carbon neutrality before 2060, though the rest of the global community and in particular the European Union with its Green Deal, and the US with its renewed climate policies, are pushing to reach this objective in 2050.In order to grant all these developments, 'green finance' plays a fundamental role for the success of this green transition. Therefore, a substantial part of this book explores the many aspects surrounding this theme. Due to renewables playing a very important role in the green transition, the final part of this book explores investment opportunities related to the development of these alternative sources of energy.

Book excerpt: Much of the debate on green growth and environmental governance tends to be general in nature, and is often conceptual or limited to single disciplines. This book examines such terms within the context of wide-interest topics including education, oceans and cities, and mixes conceptual discussion with empirical research. It takes stock of the achievements and obstacles towards sustainability over the last 20 years, and proposes new ideas and changes to create a more sustainable future. Students, academics and professionals interested in the notion of using a green economy and good governance to achieve sustainable development and poverty eradication are recommended to read this book.

Book excerpt: This Report seeks to support the preparations for the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, or Rio+20, where one of the themes will be green economy in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication. It is authored by a panel of independent experts who examined a number of public policy options, including macroeconomic, technology, industrial and trade policies, as well as the role of the international community for promoting a widespread and equitable pursuit of a green economy transition, particularly for developing countries. By taking a structuralist approach, the authors underline that the transition to a green economy involves no less than a technological transformation, with deep impacts on production structures as well as on consumption patterns.
