Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this book is to provide banks and the financial industry at large with an analysis of what is and what is not a network at their service. The background to the book is electronic banking, and the foreground brings into perspective what has been done by forward-looking financial industries and the benefits they have achieved. While banking is today an industry, it cannot be satisfactorily compared to other industries as it operates too much by its own rules. Examples in the text have therefore been restricted to banking only and, more precisely, to the four generations of online financial networks which have evolved over the past twenty years in Japan. This book is a study addressed to the management of financial institutions. Computers and communications technologists will also gain from it both insight and foresight.

Book excerpt: ISO 14001 is the star standard among the International Organization for Standardization's ISO 14000 series of environmental management standards. It has seen spectacular growth since its launch in September 1996. Worldwide registrations are set to pass the 20,000 mark in 2000 with 20 times that number reportedly waiting in the wings. In 30 explicit but concise chapters, ISO 14001: Case Studies and Practical Experiences seeks to unravel the truth behind what can and cannot be achieved by ISO 14001 and aims to provide readers with enough knowledge to make choices about its relevance and importance not only to their worlds but also to society. Written by leading practitioners, certifiers, consultants, government and academics, the book examines both the real benefits and the shortcomings organizations have experienced with ISO 14001. We learn from both.Far more ambitious than an implementation guide, the book will provide those readers struggling with the standard first-hand experiences of the real issues they will face in implementing their EMS and, just as importantly, what certifiers look for when they visit firms. ISO 14001: Case Studies and Practical Experiences is a warts-and-all expose of ISO 14001: the issues tackled; the problems faced and overcome; and, above all, the astonishing flexibility of its uses and the diversity of its users. This important book is a must for businesses, researchers, consultants, government officials, students, NGOs and support organisations who want more than just another how-to-do-it manual; but rather the truth about how ISO 14001 is really working on the ground.

Instead, the presented history covers other intriguing events and developments beyond the famous issue of banking secrecy and the corresponding scandals. Topics covered in the book include the early financial innovations by banks in Geneva to handle the sovereign risk on bonds issued in pre-revolutionary France, the monetary chaos that led to the creation of the Swiss franc, the rather peculiar banknote competition and free-banking system in Switzerland during most of the nineteenth century, how the country and its currency became a financial safe haven after World War I, the golden age of Swiss banking when Zurich was briefly one of the largest financial centres in the world, and the exceptional shocks during and after the recent global financial crisis. In sum, a fascinating story emerges about an internationally important banking centre in one of the most unlikely places in the world. This book is a must-read for students, scholars, and researchers of economics and finance, as well as practitioners interested in a better understanding of economic history in general, and Swiss banking in particular.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is written for the serious person of means who wants safety and performance from invested wealth. No matter where you live or what economic and political hazards your country of residence presents to investment you owe it to yourself to consider Switzerland as the place to put your hard-earned money, especially in the Swiss insurance annuity. In my experience a comparison of the Swiss annuity with more traditional forms of asset protection shows that an annuity can serve the same function as trusts or similar legal devices but produces a far greater return for your money with complete safety and less complexity. Here we are concerned with personal wealth, its creation, expansion and preservation. In that context it is not understatement to describe the Swiss financial system's unequaled world record as unique in combining investor safety with assured earnings. Thoughtful people who value financial freedom and asset protection know this well. The question is why any serious foreign investor fails to avail himself of the many benefits of the Swiss system. The answer is; the serious investor never fails! Every person should plan for the important aspects of their financial life. One major area is estate planning which hopefully will insure that at the time of death property passes without incident according to the deceased's wishes. The second area is lifetime financial planning which seeks to build and manage an investable estate to provide assets and income. The third area, the one I will address, is asset protection, an indispensable element without which the other two can be rendered meaningless. This is one of the first books to discuss the portfolio bond, an insurance product offered by companies in Switzerland, which offers significant asset protection, tax and privacy advantages for American investors.
