The challenge now is how to best utilize these technologies for the benefit of agriculture. Nutrient management could be improved and spatial variability reduced by variable-rate (VR) application. The objectives of this dissertation were to assess the value of VR P fertilization and P-based liquid swine manure application for corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] production compared with the traditional uniform-rate (UR) application. On-farm research methods based on replicated, long narrow strips were adapted to precision technologies. These technologies included grain yield monitors, differential global positioning systems, and geographical information systems. Treatments consisted of a non-fertilized control, a UR method based on average soil-test P (STP) for the entire field and a VR method based on STP from 0.2 to 1.7 ha grid cells. Grain yield and temporal changes in STP were used to assess treatment differences in both studies. In addition, plant dry weight, P concentration, and P uptake (V5 growth stage) were used in the fertilizer study. Phosphorus fertilization and manure often increased whole-field crop grain yield in fields which average STP values were below the Optimum interpretation class for corn and soybean production. Analyses of yield for field areas with contrasting STP values often showed significant responses to fertilizer or manure P in field areas testing Optimum or less, but rarely in high-testing areas. Phosphorus fertilization increased early plant growth and P uptake more frequently than grain yield. Although the method of P application did not influence whole-field or within-field plant responses, VR reduced soil P variability compared with UR by increasing STP in low-testing areas and decreasing or not affecting STP of high-testing areas. This research showed precision farming technologies are useful tools for improving nutrient management. Fertilization or manure application programs that vary the nutrient application rate may not result in increased yield compared with UR application methods. However, use of VR technology will result in better nutrient management and perhaps better water quality because of more efficient distribution of fertilizer or manure.

Merr.] response to placement have been limited. Three studies were completed to evaluate different aspects of crop response. The objective of the first study was to evaluate the effect of starter and broadcast fertilizer application on corn and soybean, in a typical corn-soybean rotation in Kansas. Treatments were unfertilized control, starter (N, P and K), broadcast P and K using mono ammonium phosphate (MAP) and potassium chloride (KCl) and the combination of starter and broadcast. Corn and soybean yield generally was not affected by starter and broadcast treatments. Thus fertilization may be recommended only under specific conditions. The objectives of the second study were (i) to evaluate the effect of residual and direct fertilization on soybeans after corn under a corn-soybean rotation system, and (ii) study the effect of fertilizer P and K application on soil test P (STP) and soil test K (STK) changes over time. Direct fertilization increased soybean yield while residual fertilizer did not. Therefore maintenance rates may be effective to improve soybean yield and likely maintain STP and STK levels. Application of P and K fertilizer generated significant increases in STP and STK after one year of application. The rate of P and K fertilizer required to increase 1 mg kg−1 yr−1 was between 2.8 - 5.1 kg ha−1 for P and between 1.0- 2.5 kg ha−1 for K, respectively. The objective of the third study evaluate both corn and soybean response to direct P fertilization including starter and broadcast. The treatments were a control, two starter fertilizers (with N-P and N only), five P rates (9.8, 19.6, 29.3, 39.1, 48.9 kg P ha−1) and one treatment with starter fertilizer in addition to the broadcast fertilizer application. Corn grain yield was not significantly affected by any broadcast or starter treatments. Broadcast application rates significantly increased soybean yield on low STP levels. Results of this study show that large corn or soybean yield response to starter and broadcast P application are likely with low STP levels.

Book excerpt: Optimum management of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) fertilizers for corn [Zea mays L.] and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] production requires quantitative understanding of multiple soil processes and crop responses, including supply and immobilization of N and P by soil, the response of yield and quality to nutrient availability, and the relationships and interactions between N and P cycling, crop response, and other soil physical and chemical variables. We conducted a six-year experiment on two 16-ha fields on glacial-till soils in south-central Minnesota. In each year of a corn-soybean rotation, we measured soil physical and chemical parameters and grain yield and quality at a 0.014-ha resolution within each field. These observations coincided with placement of a randomized complete block, split plot design of N and P fertilizer treatments. Spatial patterns of mineralizable N were consistent over time. Mineralizable N was highly correlated to soil nitrate at a well-drained site, but not at a poorly-drained site. Increases in available soil P per kg of net P addition were significantly related to soil pH. Within fields, spatial patterns of soybean yields were highly correlated across years, and we observed consistent relationships between yield and soil variables. Overall, soybean yield related positively to soil P and Zn and negatively to pH at all site-years. Quadratic-plateau regression models of soybean yield in relation to soil P and Zn indicate that in high pH soils at these sites, yield is optimized when soil P and Zn levels are higher than current recommendations. Corn yields responded significantly to N rate and N rate by P rate interaction in all site-years. Whole-field economic optimum N rate differed significantly by site-year and by P treatment at some site-years. Site-specific P fertilization should account for spatial variation in soil P buffering capacity. Nitrogen mineralization and NxP nutrient interactions should be accounted for in agronomic management decisions for corn production. The consistent influence of soil pH on nutrient cycling and crop response indicates the potential benefit to amelioration of high pH in calcareous glacial-till soils. Results highlight the significance of spatial variability in nutrient cycling to crop management.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Efficient P fertilization practices are of great concern to Corn Belt farmers because of the agronomic and environmental implications of increasing soil-test P (STP) trends. This study evaluated (1) long-term STP trends for various initial STP levels and annual P application rates, (2) yields of corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] as affected by P fertilization and STP. Yield and STP data were collected from three experiments established in Iowa during the 1970s on Webster (fine-loamy, mixed, mesic Typic Endoaquolls)-Nicollet (fine-loamy, mixed, mesic Aquic Hapludolls) soils, Webster-Canisteo (fine-loamy, mixed, calcareous, mesic Typic Endoaqualls) soils, and Kenyon (fine-loamy, mixed, mesic Typic Hapludolls) soils. Crops were grown in rotation each year until 2002. Three initial contrasting STP levels ranging from 17 to 75 mg kg−1 (Bray-P1) were created at two sites, and annual treatments of 0, 11, 22, and 33 kg P ha−1 were superimposed. At a third site, annual rates of 0, 22, and 45 kg P ha−1 were applied annually. Annual P rates required to maintain 16-20 mg kg−1 STP were similar at Webster-Nicollet-Canisteo soils (13-17 kg P ha−1), however,>30 kg P ha−1 was required to maintain STP levels four times higher. At the Kenyon soil, a similar Phosphorus rate maintained a higher STP level (28 mg kg−1). Critical STP concentrations identified with linear-plateau and quadratic-plateau models across sites were 18-23 mg kg−1 for corn and 11-18 mg kg−1 for soybean. Results indicate that 10-15 years of cropping without P fertilization were required on high testing soils before yield response to P was observed. Abbreviations: AGRON, Agronomy and Agricultural Engineering Research Farm; NERF, Northeast Iowa Research Farm; NIRF, Northern Iowa Research Farm; STP, soil-test P.

Yield and pH were negatively correlated in years with excessive rainfall, but positively (for corn) or not correlated (for soybean) in years with lower than average rainfall. Significantly less lime (60% less) was applied with the variable-rate method compared with the fixed-rate method. The little or no response to lime and to the variable-rate method may be explained by a usually high subsoil pH and very high small-scale pH variation. Less intensive sampling schemes identified smaller acid and alkaline areas for one field. The variable-rate method based on any of the sampling strategies considered in this study still would apply less lime than the fixed rate method in this soil association. However, the results showed no lime would be needed in soils similar to those included in this study when topsoil (0-15 cm) pH is 5.4 or higher.
