Book excerpt: Social capital theorists have shown that some people do better than others in part because they enjoy larger, more supportive, or otherwise more useful networks. But why do some people have better networks than others? Unanticipated Gains argues that the practice and structure of the churches, colleges, firms, gyms, childcare centers, and schools in which people happen to participate routinely matter more than their deliberate "networking." Exploring the experiences of New York City mothers whose children were enrolled in childcare centers, this book examines why a great deal of these mothers, after enrolling their children, dramatically expanded both the size and usefulness of their personal networks. Whether, how, and how much the mother's networks were altered--and how useful these networks were--depended on the apparently trivial, but remarkably consequential, practices and regulations of the centers. The structure of parent-teacher organizations, the frequency of fieldtrips, and the rules regarding drop-off and pick-up times all affected the mothers' networks. Relying on scores of in-depth interviews with mothers, quantitative data on both mothers and centers, and detailed case studies of other routine organizations, Small shows that how much people gain from their connections depends substantially on institutional conditions they often do not control, and through everyday processes they may not even be aware of. Emphasizing not the connections that people make, but the context in which they are made, Unanticipated Gains presents a major new perspective on social capital and on the mechanisms producing social inequality.

Book excerpt: This edited collection brings together leading scholars and practitioners from various jurisdictions with essays and commentaries co-ordinated around the theme of alignments and misalignments between commercial law and commercial practice. The purpose of the book is to prompt a more critical and constructive reassessment of current commercial law and its practices, and to instigate a more fruitful dialogue between academics, judges, law reformers and practitioners. The result is a series of provocative and challenging essays addressing an enormous range of problems that are of intimate concern to commercial practice. Some essays focus on broad themes, such as globalization and trust. Others address more specific issues, such as contract interpretation or constraining modern management. Yet another group targets special problems, such as dematerialisation or super-priority, in order to assess the success of commercial law in meeting commercial demands. The depth and breadth of issues addressed is a credit to the authors. Taken as a whole, the volume makes some pointed suggestions for improving the practices and processes, and indeed the future progress, of commercial law.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The number of Americans eligible to receive Social Security benefits will increase from forty-five million to nearly eighty million in the next twenty years. Retirement systems must therefore adapt to meet the demands of the largest aging population in our nation’s history. In Developments in the Economics of Aging, David A. Wise and a distinguished group of analysts examine the economic issues that will confront policy makers as they seek to design policies to protect the economic and physical health of these older Americans. The volume looks at such topics as factors influencing work and retirement decisions at older ages, changes in life satisfaction associated with retirement, and the shift in responsibility for managing retirement assets from professional money managers of traditional pension plans to individual account holders of 401(k)s. Developments in the Economics of Aging also addresses the complicated relationship between health and economic status, including why health behaviors vary across populations and how socioeconomic measures correlate with health outcomes.

Book excerpt: In Hindu astrology, Rahu and Ketu signify the two mathematical points on each side of the moon that have a significant impact on self-experience. The Significance of Rahu and Ketu in Vedic Astrology is realized positively and negatively in a person’s life. As a rising node of the moon, Rahu is known to cause spiritual growth and whenever it exists in a chart; the result is luxury and obsession. It’s a powerful node favorable to politicians as it presents opportunities and immense power to ascend in political affairs both justly and unjustly. Rahu also influences criminals, snakes as well as magicians just to mention a few. Rahu has the power to give wealth and make a person popular. At the same time, this shadow planet is likely to cause confusion, despair and emotional inequity. It’s very powerful in the 3rd, 6th and 11th houses of a horoscope. Ketu is a shadowy, descending and malefic planet but not as malefic as Rahu. Ketu offers liberation and nonattachment to material desires and worldly ambitions. It provides spiritual knowledge, power to differentiate, self-knowledge as well as wisdom. Whenever present in a chart, it gives a person psychic abilities. A person can perform natural healing, deal with ghosts, evil spirits, and astral forces as well as make them wizards of foods, herbs and spices. Ketu enables a person to blend in naturally among people
