Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Busilmin. If you can imagine the end of the world, Busilmin is it. Busilmin brings the definition of isolated to life. It is this isolation, this remoteness, that defines existence in the depths of the rainforest. Death is life. Life is death. Survival is the bridge. It is into the heart of this seclusion that Mission Aviation Fellowship chooses to fly; into depths of this need that we conveyed our very young family. Out of this beautiful land that we departed with our much older family, and a lifetime of near-unbelievable memories. This is not about planes. The aircraft are only the scenery for the tale. These are the stories of our years in Papua New Guinea. All families have stories. The backdrop for our narrative is the end of the world, and that brings a unique flavour to these accounts. The Sibilanga pig. The bullet at Aiyura. Crocodiles. Rainbows. Strange food. Places with stranger names. All with one thing in common: unpredictable, unforeseen, unanticipated, unexpected.

There is a wayward psychiatrist who has a baby with her patient’s husband as the starting point for a cascading effect over two families and a cruel criminal who knows how to control others. They all meet their match in Detective Inspector Sutton who carries out an intricate strategy to fight for justice, whilst fighting his own demons – the loss of his daughter. Everyone thinks they know the truth about certain events but time and again, they learn that lies, rumours and gossip have affected their thinking and their subsequent actions. There are no winners except the truth, which is revealed by pitting one against the other. A young psychologist and her delusional client steer the story through to its conclusion by focussing on a painting, a book and self-awakening.
Book Synopsis Managing the Unexpected by : Karl E. Weick
Download or read book Managing the Unexpected written by Karl E. Weick and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-01-06 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the first edition of Managing the Unexpected was published in 2001, the unexpected has become a growing part of our everyday lives. The unexpected is often dramatic, as with hurricanes or terrorist attacks. But the unexpected can also come in more subtle forms, such as a small organizational lapse that leads to a major blunder, or an unexamined assumption that costs lives in a crisis. Why are some organizations better able than others to maintain function and structure in the face of unanticipated change? Authors Karl Weick and Kathleen Sutcliffe answer this question by pointing to high reliability organizations (HROs), such as emergency rooms in hospitals, flight operations of aircraft carriers, and firefighting units, as models to follow. These organizations have developed ways of acting and styles of learning that enable them to manage the unexpected better than other organizations. Thoroughly revised and updated, the second edition of the groundbreaking book Managing the Unexpected uses HROs as a template for any institution that wants to better organize for high reliability.

Book Synopsis Facing the Unexpected by : Ronald W. Perry
Download or read book Facing the Unexpected written by Ronald W. Perry and published by Joseph Henry Press. This book was released on 2001-12-06 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Facing the Unexpected presents the wealth of information derived from disasters around the world over the past 25 years. The authors explore how these findings can improve disaster programs, identify remaining research needs, and discuss disaster within the broader context of sustainable development. How do different people think about disaster? Are we more likely to panic or to respond with altruism? Why are 110 people killed in a Valujet crash considered disaster victims while the 50,000 killed annually in traffic accidents in the U.S. are not? At the crossroads of social, cultural, and economic factors, this book examines these and other compelling questions. The authors review the influences that shape the U.S. governmental system for disaster planning and response, the effectiveness of local emergency agencies, and the level of professionalism in the field. They also compare technological versus natural disaster and examine the impact of technology on disaster programs.

Book Synopsis Expect the Unexpected by : Stefano Cotrozzi
Download or read book Expect the Unexpected written by Stefano Cotrozzi and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-04-29 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph on biblical linguistics is a highly specialized, pragmatic investigation of the controversial question of "foregrounding"-the deviation from some norm or convention-in Old Testament narratives. The author presents and examines the two main sources of pragmatic foregrounding: events or states deviating from well-established schemata, structures of reader expectation that can be manipulated by the narrator to highlight specific "chunks" of discourse; and evaluative devices, which are used by the narrator to indicate to the reader the point of the story and direct its interpretation. Cotrozzi critiques the particular evaluative device known as the "historic present", a narrative strategy that employs the present tense to describe past event. He tests two main theories that support this device by using a cross-linguistic model of the historical present drawing upon a variety of languages. Cotrozzi ultimately refutes these theories with a thorough examination and detailed refutation. He concludes with a study of a particular Hebraic verb as a particular marker of represented perception, a technique whereby the character's perceptions are expressed directly from its point of view.
