Unearthing the Underworld reveals the hidden world of rocks—the keepers of secrets of past environments, changing climates, and the pulse of life over billions of years. Even the most seemingly ordinary stone can tell us much about the history of this planet, opening vistas of ancient worlds of ice, raging floods, strange unbreathable atmospheres, and prehistoric worlds teeming with life. Remarkably, many types of rocks owe their existence to living organisms—from the remains of bodies of dead animals to rocks formed from rotting ancient forests, or even created by the activity of fungi, bacteria, and viruses. Anything but dull and uninteresting, rocks are intriguing portals that illuminate the secret underworld upon which we live.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the third in a series of anthropological studies which analyze ghosts and haunting phenomena in their cultural context. A history of visitations to the Gettysburg landscape is linked to the presence or absence of anomalous sensory manifestations. The preliminary analysis of the data suggests that the hauntings at Gettysburg may be a product of sociocultural factors, in part related to the growth of heritage tourism, rather than any ghostly manifestations by civil war soldiers. Since this is a preliminary analysis, a research design is proposed to further excavate the Gettysburg landscape. This approach is based on the use of ethnographic context, spatial symmetry, cultural relativity, and performance-based investigative practices. The author proposes that through this methodology, acontrolled excavation of the landscape can be made, thus unearthing a more scientific analysis and evaluation of Gettysburg as a haunted cultural place.

Book excerpt: Exploring the Cosmos through Gemstones: A Geologic Odyssey Welcome to the captivating journey through the realms of gemstones that extends beyond our terrestrial boundaries. In this unprecedented volume, we embark on a cosmic odyssey, unravelLing the geological tapestry of gemstones not only from Earth but also from celestial bodies within our solar system. This exploration is rooted in the fascinating intersection of geology, petrology, and the enigmatic world of medicinal geology. Our odyssey begins with the letter 'A,' a symbolic entry into the lexicon of celestial gemstones. Each subsequent chapter, corresponding to a letter of the alphabet, unveils the geological wonders of gemstones, their chemical compositions, meanings, and their unique roles in medicinal geology. The celestial gemstones featured in this compendium are not mere cosmic curiosities; they are windows into the geological history of planets, moons, and asteroids. Their formation, crystallization, and metamorphic journeys echo the profound processes shaping the celestial bodies they call home. From the Aegis of Mars with its captivating red hues to the Zephyr of Europa, where ice and minerals dance in a cosmic ballet, we traverse the diverse landscapes of our solar system. Each gemstone is a testament to the geological forces that have sculpted these extraterrestrial landscapes over eons. Every entry in this anthology provides a glimpse into the chemical formulae and meanings behind these gemstones, shedding light on the aesthetic, cultural, and mystical significance they hold. Yet, our exploration goes beyond the aesthetic allure; it delves into the medicinal properties these gemstones offer. Through the lens of medicinal geology, we uncover the healing potential, both ancient and modern, that lies within these celestial treasures. As we navigate the chapters of this book, we invite you to envision a cosmic pharmacy, where gemstones are not just ornamental, but therapeutic. Discover how the energies of these extraterrestrial gems intersect with the well-being of terrestrial life, exploring the profound connections between geological compositions and medicinal applications. In this exploration of gemstones from A to Z, we aim to spark curiosity, inspire awe, and deepen our understanding of the intricate relationships between geology, petrology, and the healing arts. Let this volume be a guide to a cosmic symphony, where the language of gemstones resonates with the geological pulse of the universe. Top of Form

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every rock is a tangible trace of the earth’s past. The Story of the Earth in 25 Rocks tells the fascinating stories behind the discoveries that shook the foundations of geology. In twenty-five chapters—each about a particular rock, outcrop, or geologic phenomenon—Donald R. Prothero recounts the scientific detective work that shaped our understanding of geology, from the unearthing of exemplary specimens to tectonic shifts in how we view the inner workings of our planet. Prothero follows in the footsteps of the scientists who asked—and answered—geology’s biggest questions: How do we know how old the earth is? What happened to the supercontinent Pangea? How did ocean rocks end up at the top of Mount Everest? What can we learn about our planet from meteorites and moon rocks? He answers these questions through expertly chosen case studies, such as Pliny the Younger’s firsthand account of the eruption of Vesuvius; the granite outcrops that led a Scottish scientist to theorize that the landscapes he witnessed were far older than Noah’s Flood; the salt and gypsum deposits under the Mediterranean Sea that indicate that it was once a desert; and how trying to date the age of meteorites revealed the dangers of lead poisoning. Each of these breakthroughs filled in a piece of the greater puzzle that is the earth, with scientific discoveries dovetailing with each other to offer an increasingly coherent image of the geologic past. Summarizing a wealth of information in an entertaining, approachable style, The Story of the Earth in 25 Rocks is essential reading for the armchair geologist, the rock hound, and all who are curious about the earth beneath their feet.
