Book excerpt: This exploratory study examines the participation of women's groups in regional planning of health and social services in Quebec with the purpose of identifying problems and successes in their relations with regional health and social services boards (RHSSBs). The report begins with a description of the commitments with respect to the status of women included in regional services organization plans for the 1998-2002 period, and the organizational structure introduced by the RHSSBs to ensure implementation of these commitments. It then presents a descriptive-comparative analysis of the situation in 4 regions in order to contrast the intra-regional dynamics and to identify indices with respect to the observed differences in the planning and programming of services and in the interactions of RHSSBs with women's groups. The report concludes with recommendations for promoting gender equality in regional health and social services planning.

Book Synopsis Connecting Histories by : Bonnie Thomas

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Francophone Caribbean boasts a trove of literary gems. Distinguished by innovative, elegant writing and thought-provoking questions of history and identity, this exciting body of work demands scholarly attention. Its authors treat the traumatic legacies of shared and personal histories pervading Caribbean experience in striking ways, delineating a path towards reconciliation and healing. The creation of diverse personal narratives—encompassing autobiography, autofiction (heavily autobiographical fiction), travel writing, and reflective essay—remains characteristic of many Caribbean writers and offers poignant illustrations of the complex interchange between shared and personal pasts and how they affect individual lives. Through their historically informed autobiography, the authors in this study—Maryse Condé, Gisèle Pineau, Patrick Chamoiseau, Edwidge Danticat, and Dany Laferrière—offer compelling insights into confronting, coming to terms with, and reconciling their past. The employment of personal narratives as the vehicle to carry out this investigation points to a tension evident in these writers’ reflections, which constantly move between the collective and the personal. As an inescapably complex network, their past extends beyond the notion of a single, private life. These contemporary authors from Martinique, Guadeloupe, and Haiti intertwine their personal memories with reflections on the histories of their homelands and on the European and North American countries they adopt through choice or necessity. They reveal a multitude of deep connections that illuminate distinct Francophone Caribbean experiences.

Download or read book Réussite Scolaire Comparée Selon Le Sexe written by Pierrette Bouchard and published by Condition féminine Canada. This book was released on 2003 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research investigates the advocacy discourse focussing on boys and men during the decade between 1990 and 2000, as reported in the Canadian and international press. The objective is to explain the dynamics of this discourse, using the school drop-out theme in order to identify other themes that authors link together: suicide, child custody, violence perpetrated by women, etc. It examines the structure and content of the masculinist discourse, on what and whom it relies, how it is communicated and what it proposes as solutions to the problems it denounces. The report contrasts this discourse with some existing factual data to demonstrate its biases and limitations. In conclusion, it examines the issues raised by the masculinist discourse and its impact on women and women's groups, and makes recommendations for public policy.

Download or read book Patrick Modiano written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While his preoccupation with the period of the Occupation remains a permanent theme, Patrick Modiano is increasingly interested in the exploration of time and memory, and the attendant problem of reconstituting the past. This volume explores all these features. It casts new light on Modiano’s earliest novels, examines afresh his more recent work including his stories for children, situates it in the context of contemporary writing and unravels the intricacies and subtleties of his style. It underlines Modiano’s position as one of France’s major writers of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries and will be of interest to all who are interested in the modern French novel and the complex interactions between fiction and history.
