Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'In the last two decades, the history of the Counter-Reformation has been stretched and re-shaped in numerous directions. Reflecting the variety and innovation that characterize studies of early modern Catholicism today, this volume incorporates topics as diverse as life cycle and community, science and the senses, the performing and visual arts, material objects and print culture, war and the state, sacred landscapes and urban structures. Moreover, it challenges the conventional chronological parameters of the Counter-Reformation and introduces the reader to the latest research on global Catholicism. The Ashgate Research Companion to the Counter-Reformation presents a comprehensive examination of recent scholarship on early modern Catholicism in its many guises. It examines how the Tridentine reforms inspired conflict and conversion, and evaluates lives and identities, spirituality, culture and religious change. This wide-ranging and original research guide is a unique resource for scholars and students of European and transnational history.

Book Synopsis The Emergence of Tolerance in the Dutch Republic by :
Download or read book The Emergence of Tolerance in the Dutch Republic written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-06 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the fruit of the colloquium "Les Pays-Bas, carrefour de la tolérance aux Temps Modernes", held in Wassenaar, the Netherlands, in 1994. Toleration in the strict sense of the word was very much against the grain of sixteenth-century European history. This volume charts the emergence and vicissitudes of the concept of tolerance and its practical implications in the Dutch Republic, from the revolt against Spain in the sixteenth century to the early eighteenth century. The various contributions, all by distinguished scholars, address such issues as Erasmus' views on toleration, the relation between tolerance and irenism, and the contemporary intellectual debate about toleration in the Dutch Republic. This important volume will prove indispensable to historians of the Low Countries, students of humanism and all those interested in the intellectual history of the 16th-18th centuries.

Book Synopsis Bayle, Jurieu, and the Dictionnaire Historique et Critique by : Mara van der Lugt
Download or read book Bayle, Jurieu, and the Dictionnaire Historique et Critique written by Mara van der Lugt and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-03-17 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bayle, Jurieu and the Dictionnaire Historique et Critique presents a new study of Pierre Bayle's Dictionnaire Historique et Critique (1696), with special reference to Bayle's polemical engagement with the theologian Pierre Jurieu. While recent years have seen a surge of interest in Bayle, there is as yet no consensus on how to interpret Bayle's ambiguous stance on reason and religion, and how to make sense of the Dictionnaire: although specific parts of the Dictionnaire have received much scholarly attention, the work has hardly been studied as a whole, and little is known about how the Dictionnaire was influenced by Bayle's polemic with Jurieu. This volume aims to establish a new method for reading the Dictionnaire, under a dual premise: first, that the work can only be rightly understood when placed within the immediate context of its production in the 1690s; second, that it is only through an appreciation of the mechanics of the work as a whole, and of the role played by its structural and stylistic particularities, that we can attain an appropriate interpretation of its parts. Special attention is paid to the heated theological-political conflict between Bayle and Jurieu in the 1690s, which had a profound influence on the project of the dictionary and on several of its major themes, such as the tensions in the relationship between the intellectual sphere of the Republic of Letters and the political state, but also the danger of religious fanaticism spurring intolerance and war. The final chapters demonstrate that Bayle's clash with Jurieu was also one of the driving forces behind Bayle's reflection on the problem of evil; they expose the fundamentally problematic nature of both Bayle's theological association with Jurieu, and his self-defence in the second edition of the Dictionnaire.
Book Synopsis The Collected Edition of Roger Dorsinville's Postcolonial Literary Criticism in Africa: 1982-1986 by : Roger Dorsinville
Download or read book The Collected Edition of Roger Dorsinville's Postcolonial Literary Criticism in Africa: 1982-1986 written by Roger Dorsinville and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contribution of this collection to scholarship is fourfold: it contributes to the expansion of knowledge about the African continent through a critic's response to its many forms of representation by writers outside as well as inside Africa; the range of writings provides intertextual evidence supportive of Dorsinville's own complex representation of Africa in his fiction and memoirs; it is a documented record of a broad paradigm concerned with a postcolonial representation of the dialectic of home and exile, memory and identity, and selfhood and otherness; and it provides a fascinating display of a postcolonial writer-critic's intellectual journey enlivened by his use of voice in the African tradition of oral exchange whereby he positions himself as the one speaking to and for the many. The volumes follow the original chronology of the publication of the individual texts. The contents range widely from books on (or by) many African and Caribbean writers, as well as Doris Lessing, David Halberstam, Idi Amin and Muhammad Ali.
