Book excerpt: Diagnostics of Undulator A{number_sign}2 (UA2) radiation was performed during the October 1997 mn at the Advanced Photon Source (APS). The UA2 undulator is a standard 3.3-cm-period APS Undulator A, which was positioned downstream from the center of the straight section at Sector 8. The diagnostics included the angular-spectral measurements of the undulator radiation to determine the undulator radiation absolute spectral flux and the particle beam divergence. The results of the absolute spectral flux measurements are compared to the undulator spectrum calculated from measured undulator magnetic field. The particle's energy spread was determined from spectra comparison. Previously, the authors reported the first measurements made on Undulator A at the APS. The purpose of the present report is to summarize the results of the diagnostics performed on the Sector 8 undulator at the request of the IMM-CAT staff, and to present a more general discussion of undulator radiation sources at the APS and details of their diagnostics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The low-energy undulator test line (LEUTL) is being constructed at the Advanced Photon Source (APS). Its first purpose is to fully characterize innovative, future generation undulators, some of which may prove difficult or impossible to measure by traditional techniques. Second, LEUTL will act as a test line to investigate the generation of coherent radiation at wavelengths down to a few tens of nanometers. The line will use a high-brightness rf electron gun as its source and the APS linac to accelerate these electrons up to>650 MeV. This beam will then be directed into a new enclosure that is nearly 50 m long and will accommodate beamline components, diagnostics, and undulators. This region is wide enough to house two separate beamlines. In addition, there is an external end station appropriate for housing the equipment necessary to directly study the generated light outside of the radiation environment. At present, the new enclosure and building are complete, the new rf electron gun is installed and operational, and a part of the necessary transport line is installed. An undulator cell prototype, suitable for testing the requirements of single-pass free-electron laser operation, is near completion and will be installed during the winter shutdown of 1997. This paper will describe the LEUTL project and its capability for exploring the self-amplified spontaneous emission process.

Initial results from the diagnostics prototypes on the linac test stand operating at 45-MeV include current monitor data, beam loss monitor data, and video digitization using VME architecture.

Book excerpt: We report the status of the diagnostics undulator beamline for the Advanced Photon Source (APS) storage ring. The beamline was designed for the characterization of the 7-GeV, low-emittance positron beam at high resolution. The special diagnostics undulator has been manufactured by STI Optronics. The device exhibits very low magnetic field errors at closed gap of 10.5 mm: first field integral less than 15 gauss·cm, and optical phase error less than 1.5°. The front end of the beamline and a monochromator are installed and tested for use on divergence and directional stability measurements with a target resolution of 3 [mu]rad utilizing the first harmonic radiation of 25 keV. Initial results for the divergence measurement show that the storage ring is operating well within its design goals.

Both gated cameras and streak cameras will be used to measure the beam properties. Additionally, coherent transition radiation (CTR) and diffraction radiation (DR) based techniques will be evaluated. These beam characterizations will support self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) scaling experiments.

Book excerpt: A self-amplified spontaneously emitting (SASE) free-electron laser (FEL) for the visible-to-ultraviolet spectral range is under construction at the Advanced Photon Source at Argonne National Laboratory. The amplifier part of the FEL consists of twelve identical 2.7-meter-long sections. Each section includes a 2.4-meter-long, 33-mm-period hybrid undulator, a quadruple lens, and a set of electron beam and radiation diagnostics equipment. The undulatory will operate at a fixed magnetic gap (approx. 9.3 mm) with K=3.1. The electron beam position will be monitored using capacitive beam position monitors, YAG scintillators with imaging optics, and secondary emission detectors. The spatial distribution of the photon beam will be monitored by position sensitive detectors equipped with narrow-band filters. A high-resolution spectrograph will be used to observe the spectral distribution of the FEL radiation.

Micropulse bunch lengths as short as 3 to 4 ps were also measured using a C5680 streak camera. Additionally, coherent transition radiation (CTR) and diffraction radiation (DR) based techniques will be evaluated. These beam characterizations will support self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) scaling experiments.

The possible photon energy interval spanned in this way depends on the undulator period, minimum closed gap, minimum acceptable photon intensity and storage ring energy. The minimum magnet gap depends directly on the stay clear particle beam aperture required for storage ring operation. The tunability of undulators planned for the Advanced Photon Source with first harmonic photon energies in the range of 5 to 20 keV are discussed. The results of an analysis used to optimize the APS ring energy is presented and tunability contours and intensity parameters are presented for two typical classes of devices.

A novel design of a Be window is presented for the Advanced Photon Source (APS) diagnostics undulator beamline, whose beam has a peak power density of 150 W/mm2 (7 GeV/100 mA stored beam). The window has a double concave profile with a thickness of 0.5 mm at the center and is brazed to a water-cooled oxygen-free, high-conductivity (OFHC) copper manifold. Finite-element thermal analysis of the Be window is also presented.

So far they have met the demanding requirements of the user community; however, there is always a desire to go beyond what is presently available or even desirable. The Advanced Photon Source (APS) Low-Energy Undulator Test Line (LEUTL) was conceived to address the advancement of synchrotron light sources. The LEUTL uses the existing APS linac and a low-emittance electron gun, and by means of measurements of the beam and generated light, will test new and innovative undulators and push the technology and physics of single-pass, coherent light sources. The design and status of the LEUTL will be described along with its immediate capabilities and those planned for the future.
