There are “holes” in the way scuba diving instructors teach, and this handbook will lay it bare so you can prepare to learn to dive and get what you need for a lifetime of legendary underwater adventures. *** Recommendations are backed by industry-wide surveys that the author shares with you. He also explains ISO international scuba diving training standards so you can prepare and know if you are being short-changed. This step-by-step handbook to learning to dive covers scuba certification courses, dive equipment & dive travel with 550+ pages of actionable information. - Should I get a PADI certification or go with another dive training agency? - How much does it cost to learn to dive? How can I save money? - How can I get comfortable underwater? - What can I do to feel & be safe while scuba diving? - What are the scuba certification levels & which ones matter to me? - Typical mistakes made by people who decide to learn to dive. - The pitfalls & traps in the dive industry. How to avoid them. - Where to take your certification and with whom. - Selecting a dive instructor, dive center, dive resort & dive boat. - Your health & fitness to dive. - What dive gear to buy & what to rent. - How to save money by spending on what will actually help you. - And so much more! Most books about scuba diving are written by instructors with good content. But Darcy Kieran gives you a 360-degree view from his experience as a scuba diving instructor trainer & owner/manager of dive shops, dive equipment wholesalers, dive boats, scuba diving university programs, and dive resorts. *** This handbook won’t teach you how to scuba dive – you must get in the water for that! But you will know exactly what to do before registering for a scuba certification course. The author shares typical mistakes that would cost you time and money and, in many cases, provide you with such a bad experience that you would want to stop scuba diving. This book gives you a chance to learn from others' mistakes! It will help you understand how the dive industry operates so you can navigate it to your advantage. Do not risk missing out on a lifetime of legendary scuba diving adventures because many dive professionals you’ll encounter are not always professional. Instead, learn how to be the leader of your own adventure!

Book excerpt: It exists. At least, it has to exist, right? Somewhere between the wild expanse of the unknown and teetering on the scale of unrestrained innovation and morality must exist a specimen capable of complete and utter submission to the Vekaiyun Ideal. Maybe there exists more than one specimen. Perhaps these specimens, if they exist, merely need to be conditioned, controlled, and taught from an early age to bend to the wills and wants of the state. Azsur Venavle and his array of like-minded generals longed for such devoted subjects; therefore, it was made so. One such individual, Ikrisia Levinile, known as Number Eight, is among such rootless specimens and is a peculiar study. Though a child, she is quick to grasp advanced concepts, and like her groupmates, she is a capable tactician. She was made that way, after all. Any vestige of compassion or emotional weaknesses appears to have been corrected, leaving a clean slate ready to accept the dogma of the all-important Vekaiyun state under Venavle's rule, thereby ensuring his regime and those like his will remain intact for years to come. Or so it appears. Specimens can have souls. They are more than a simple line of data tested against an algorithm of conditioned responses. Perhaps there's something more to this Ikrisia Levinile that the analysts missed. Perhaps there's another side that the cold hands of Azsur Venavle's subordinates haven't grasped. Perhaps a change is slowly forming against the horizon. Somewhere between the lines and existing only as harmless anomalies, an independent soul, an entity apart from the supplements and indoctrinations, exists. It exists. At least, it has to exist, right?

Book excerpt: “An engaging, humorous, revealing, and refreshingly human look at the bizarre, life-threatening, and delightfully humdrum exploits of everyone from sports heroes to sex workers.” -- Douglas Rushkoff, author of Coercion, Ecstasy Club, and Media Virus This wide-ranging survey of the American economy at the turn of the millennium is stunning, surprising, and always entertaining. It gives us an unflinching view of the fabric of this country from the point of view of the people who keep it all moving. The more than 120 roughly textured monologues that make up Gig beautifully capture the voices of our fast-paced and diverse economy. The selections demonstrate how much our world has changed--and stayed the same--in the three decades prior to the turn of the millennium. If you think things have speeded up, become more complicated and more technological, you're right. But people's attitudes about their jobs, their hopes and goals and disappointments, endure. Gig's soul isn't sociological--it's emotional. The wholehearted diligence that people bring to their work is deeply, inexplicably moving. People speak in these pages of the constant and complex stresses nearly all of them confront on the job, but, nearly universally, they throw themselves without reservation into coping with them. Instead of resisting work, we seem to adapt to it. Some of us love our jobs, some of us don't, but almost all of us are not quite sure what we would do without one. With all the hallmarks of another classic on this subject, Gig is a fabulous read, filled with indelible voices from coast to coast. After hearing them, you'll never again feel quite the same about how we work.

Book excerpt: Captured by murderous land-grabbing 'war veterans', former Zimbabwe international swimming star Kathleen O'Dea and heavily pregnant Heather, wife of anti-Mugabe politician Roy Bennett, were forced to watch the horrific beating of Bennett's loyal black farm workers, some of whom were raped and murdered. Under threat of death from the machete-wielding mob the two women had to chant pro-Mugabe slogans. Heather later lost the baby she was carrying. Bravely defiant, Kathleen stayed to help other white farmers, getting caught up in more terrifying farm raids, before she fled to England with only AGBP10 in her pocket, believing that she might get the British Government to stop all the brutality in her beloved homeland. Sometimes disturbing, sometimes sad, sometimes wickedly funny, Kathleen's extraordinary story personifies the impact Mugabe has had on the lives of thousands of "e;wandering Zimbabweans."e;

Because Jade has two left feet—er, flippers. Who knew being a high school freshman is even more awkward than being a plus-size aqua-phobic mer-girl? At least her only drama is of the human variety... Or not. The Mermish Council has just declared that all land-dwelling mers but return to the ocean. Pronto. But there's no way Jade is going to let her mom, or Luke, her...boyfriend? mer-guy-friend?, disappear into the deep, dark ocean. Again. After all, a girl's got to have a date to her first dance. If Jade can stop mer-mageddon, finding a plus-size dress that doesn't look like a shower curtain should be a piece of cake. Praise for Real Mermaids Don't Wear Toe Rings: "Bravo to Hélène Boudreau for hitting the bull's-eye with a fresh, affectionate, watery twist on a classic, coming-of-age story."—New York Journal of Books "The author keeps the suspense high...while tapping straight into young teens' angst about friends, enemies, and boys."—Kirkus Reviews
