Book excerpt: Part 3 addresses a long-standing debate about how working memory stores object information, by showing that the storage capacity of visual working memory is subject to separate limits for color and shape information, independent of the number of objects on which those features appear. This indicates that working memory stores features from different dimensions in separate feature-specific memory stores. I show that resources from a separate spatial working memory system are needed to retain information about how features were organized into objects, but are not needed to retain information about the features themselves. Together, these results indicate that the features of objects are stored separately in working memory and linked together into integrated representations through spatial information. This architecture mirrors that of immediate perception, in which primary visual features are processed and represented separately and integrated through spatial information. Thus, immediate perception and visual working memory operate by means of a common architecture, such that spatial information keeps visual features organized as objects during successive stages of visual processing. These findings are discussed in relation to existing models of working memory.

A large body of research has attempted to quantify the capacity of visual working memory by focusing on how many individual objects or visual features can be actively maintained in memory. This thesis presents a novel theoretical framework for understanding working memory capacity, suggesting that our memory representations are complex and structured even for simple visual displays, and formalizing such structured representations is necessary to understand the architecture and capacity of visual working memory. Chapter 1 reviews previous empirical research on visual working memory capacity, and argues that an understanding of memory capacity requires moving beyond quantifying how many items people can remember and instead focusing on the content of our memory representations. Chapter 2 argues for structured memory representations by demonstrating that we encode a summary of all of the items on a display in addition to information about particular items, and use both item and summary information to complete working memory tasks. Chapter 3 describes a computational model that formalizes the roles of perceptual organization and the encoding of summary statistics in visual working memory, and provides a way to quantify capacity even in the presence of richer, more structured memory representations. This formal framework predicts how well observers will be able to remember individual working memory displays, rather than focusing on average performance across many displays. Chapter 4 uses information theory to examine visual working memory through the framework of compression, and demonstrates that introducing regularities between items allows us to encode more colors in visual working memory. Thus, working memory capacity needs to be understood by taking into account learned knowledge, rather than simply focusing on the number of items to be remembered. Together, this research suggests that visual working memory capacity is best characterized by structured representations where prior knowledge influences how much can be stored and displays are encoded at multiple levels of abstraction.

This study addresses a longstanding debate in the literature about whether storage limits in visual working memory include a limit to the complexity of discrete items. We examined the issue with a number of change-detection experiments that used complex stimuli which possessed multiple features per stimulus item. Some past research that used the same methodology as our experiments found that detection of changes in stimuli was unaffected by how many features of the items participants were required to remember (Luck and Vogel, 1997). However, in none of our eight experiments were we able to replicate that result and instead found that participants were less able to detect changes when they were required to remember more features of the items. We were unable to support the notion that items with multiple relevant features can be processed by visual working memory without loss.
