Those surpass the quest for economic efficiency that has been the primary objective until recent times. In an intensive fossil-fuel energy world, it is critical to find more effective ways of using the existing resources and of identifying technologies that can improve the sustainability of the energy model. Both, distributed energy resources and renewable-based electricity generation technologies are considered, by energy experts and also policymakers, to be essential for this purpose. Co-generation of electricity and heat at the residential level, known as micro-CHP, is an attractive alternative because of the potential for enhancing energy efficiency, reducing GHG emissions, and improving the utilization of primary energy resources. This thesis aims at quantitatively assessing the impacts of a large-scale penetration of micro-CHPs within an energy system. Based on system-wide and residential metrics, this work intends to understand whether or not this technology is a valuable contribution to social welfare. For this purpose, a methodology is developed to integrate increasing numbers of micro-CHPs into a system's generation capacity expansion process over a 20-year timeframe, and into an electric power system's daily operation for a single year. Findings from our long-term analysis demonstrated that micro-CHPs helped in reducing cumulative C02 emissions. Under high-to-medium carbon price scenarios, they mostly displaced installed capacity from gas-based technologies, such as natural gas combined cycle units. Other results suggest that a larger micro-CHP penetration could be encouraged through economic incentives such as capital costs reduction, and/or lower natural gas retail prices, where conditions may favor one micro-CHP technology over another. Better economic conditions stimulate the deployment of micro-CHPs with low heat-to-power ratio (HPR), while machines with very high HPR do not appear to be a competitive alternative when compared to other micro-CHP technologies and conventional heating systems. Findings from our short-term analysis demonstrated that widespread deployment of micro-CHPs results in positive effects, such as C02 emissions reductions, energy efficiency improvements, decrease in system energy production costs, and summer peak load reduction at both system and residential levels. It was also found that these benefits could increase with the incorporation of additional features such as a hot water storage unit integrated with the heating system, micro-CHP modulating capability, and a micro-CHP price-based control strategy. However, the benefits at the system level seem to be relatively low for the level of penetration, assumed to be 10% of the total electric installed capacity. Moreover, the operation of a large number of these units considerably increases on-site natural gas fuel consumption all year round. Results also suggest that an adequate tariff design improves the economic efficiency of the system and the operation of micro-CHPs under an intelligent control strategy. When the price signal sent to customers reflects the system's short-term marginal price, the operation of the micro-CHPs is more efficient, and with minimum excess heat. Moreover, findings show that a production subsidy in the form of a buy-back rate impacts the operation of micro-CHPs which may distort the short-term marginal price signal. Depending on the tariff rate, micro-CHPs may favor electricity-only production, resulting in increased costs, increased excess heat, and decreased efficiency. In addition, it was shown that a flat electric tariff rate may result in similar results as with an hourly retail rate, in particular for micro-CHP technologies with medium to high heat-to-power ratio. In the end, the goal of this research is to have a better understanding of the conditions that influence the penetration of micro-CHPs, the economic signals that impact their operation, and the complexities that a widespread penetration brings to energy systems. We observe that this technology lends itself to qualitatively different ways of providing electricity service at value as seen by the customers. Future research is needed to explore potential of micro-CHPs for including customer choice.

Book excerpt: Two general questions stood at the beginning of this PhD-thesis, namely: • What are the mechanisms which lead to the emergence and establishment of new technologies? • How can this process of technological change be influenced politically? In this sense, conceptual and theoretical interests were the early driving forces of the research work. This is also reflected in the considerable attention paid to the nature of technological change and political control. The result is an holistic per spective which builds on inputs from different disciplines and aims at dynamic interpretation. This, however, created a severe methodological problem: How could such a comprehensive perspective be used constructively? To develop this link between theory and forward-looking, policy-oriented analysis, and to devise a methodology which showed explicitly how this approach could be used in a con structive way were in fact the major challenges of this research project. The appli cation to the example of combined heat and power generation, and the comparison of the developments in the UK and in Germany serve the purpose to demonstrate how this approach and methodology can be implemented in practice. These as pects were also of particular interest to the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS), one ofthe institutes of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre, where most of the research work reported in this PhD-thesis was carried out.

Book excerpt: Combined heat and power (CHP) systems (also known as CHP) generate electricity (and/or mechanical energy) and thermal energy in a single, integrated system. This contrasts with common practice where electricity is generated at a central power plant, and on-site heating and cooling equipment is used to meet non-electric energy requirements. The significant increase in efficiency with CHP resulting in lower fuel consumption compared with separate generation of heat and power is inline with Government direction in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This book therefore, study the potential of CHP programs in Malaysian Pulp and Paper Industry and then rank the best CHP technologies available to be implemented. The analysis on the cost effectiveness of CHP will be performed in three case studies using software called RETScreen. The priority of available CHP options were weighed according to the pay back period (PBP), internal rate of return (IRR), net present value (NPV) and also the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction cost. As a conclusion, industries with similar facilities as the case studes can view the potential of CHP and then apply the technology in their plant.

Book excerpt: This paper describes the economically optimal adoption and operation of distributed energy resources (DER) by a hypothetical California microgrid ((mu)Grid) consisting of a group of commercial buildings over an historic test year, 1999. The optimization is conducted using a customer adoption model (DER-CAM) developed at Berkeley Lab and implemented in the General Algebraic Modeling System (GAMS). A (mu)Grid is a semiautonomous grouping of electricity and heat loads interconnected to the existing utility grid (macrogrid) but able to island from it. The (mu)Grid minimizes the cost of meeting its energy requirements (consisting of both electricity and heat loads) by optimizing the installation and operation of DER technologies while purchasing residual energy from the local combined natural gas and electricity utility. The available DER technologies are small-scale generators (

Book excerpt: Berkeley Lab has for several years been developing methods for selection of optimal microgrid systems, especially for commercial building applications, and applying these methods in the Distributed Energy Resources Customer Adoption Model (DER-CAM). This project began with 3 major goals: (1) to conduct detailed analysis to find the optimal equipment combination for microgrids at a few promising commercial building hosts in the two favorable markets of California and New York, (2) to extend the analysis capability of DER-CAM to include both heat and electricity storage, and (3) to make an initial effort towards adding consideration of power quality and reliability (PQR) to the capabilities of DER-CAM. All of these objectives have been pursued via analysis of the attractiveness of a Consortium for Electric Reliability Technology Solutions (CERTS) Microgrid consisting of multiple nameplate 100 kW Tecogen Premium Power Modules (CM-100). This unit consists of an asynchronous inverter-based variable speed internal combustion engine genset with combined heat and power (CHP) and power surge capability. The essence of CERTS Microgrid technology is that smarts added to the on-board power electronics of any microgrid device enables stable and safe islanded operation without the need for complex fast supervisory controls. This approach allows plug and play development of a microgrid that can potentially provide high PQR with a minimum of specialized site-specific engineering. A notable feature of the CM-100 is its time-limited surge rating of 125 kW, and DER-CAM capability to model this feature was also a necessary model enhancement.

This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this research is to develop a new policy framework for the use of Combined Heat & Power systems' (CHP) in Small and Medium Sized Enterprises2 (SMEs). This entailed an assessment of the extent to which the current national policy framework for the use of CHP is effective and from contemporary data obtained from CHP operators, policy makers, designers and regulators, subsequently to develop a new policy framework. The design of the research process combines the strengths of engineering, economic and social policy academic disciplines for an examination of the potential for the use of CHP in SMEs. The research methodology dictated the use of qualitative and quantitative methods for data collection. The analyses of the data collected formed the basis for proposing a new Governance policy framework designed to encourage the use of CHP in the SMEs. The new Governance framework is proposed as an amalgamation of Support Systems set on the macro and micro levels of SME governance. A Governance Support System (GSS) offers SMEs an integrated structure for regional sustainable development, including flexible decision support base. The Business Decision Support System (BDSS) is designed as a simple tool for use by SME managers' considering CHP as part of any proposal involving capacity constraints for heat or electricity in the business. The thesis concludes that proactive adoption of the new Governance framework would allow for easier access of SMEs to CHP systems as well as assisting the Government in meeting its climate change objectives. 1 A CHP system is one that simultaneously produces heat and electricity in a single process. 2 Enterprises that employ less than 250 staff, with an annual turnover no more than 40 million Euros andis less than 25% owned by s large enterprise.
