Book Synopsis The Basics of Atoms and Molecules by : Tom Jackson
Download or read book The Basics of Atoms and Molecules written by Tom Jackson and published by The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc. This book was released on 2013-12-15 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fun-filled introduction to matter, the elements of the periodic table, atoms, electrons, reactions and bonding, and radioactivity, this volume provides young adults with chemistry examples that reflect their real-world interconnections in science. Key terms, easy experiments, and clear illustrations help to guide students through chemical applications. A chapter about Niels Bohr and his model for the atom honors his contribution to the understanding of atomic structure and to nuclear fission. Tools and techniques, such as a scanning tunneling microscope, Rutherford's gold foil experiment, and a mass spectrometer, highlight this instructive text that is aligned to the Common Core Standards.

With this book, readers will journey into that microscopic realm of physical science to better understand the atom, its various components, and how they interact to form all the matter around us.

Download or read book Order from Force written by Jeffrey H Williams and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present theme concerns the forces of nature, and what investigations of these forces can tell us about the world we see about us. The story of these forces is long and complex, and contains many episodes that are not atypical of the bulk of scientific research, which could have achieved greater acclaim 'if only...'. The intention of this book is to introduce ideas of how the visible world, and those parts of it that we cannot observe, either because they are too small or too large for our scale of perception, can be understood by consideration of only a few fundamental forces. The subject in these pages will be the authority of the commonly termed, laws of physics, which arise from the forces of nature, and the corresponding constants of nature (for example, the speed of light, c, the charge of the electron, e, or the mass of the electron, me).
Book Synopsis God and the Atom by : Victor J. Stenger
Download or read book God and the Atom written by Victor J. Stenger and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2013-04-09 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This history of atomism, from Democritus to the recent discovery of the Higgs boson, chronicles one of the most successful scientific hypotheses ever devised. Originating separately in both ancient Greece and India, the concept of the atom persisted for centuries, despite often running afoul of conventional thinking. Until the twentieth century, no direct evidence for atoms existed. Today it is possible to actually observe atoms using a scanning tunneling microscope. In this book, physicist Victor J. Stenger makes the case that, in the final analysis, atoms and the void are all that exists. The book begins with the story of the earliest atomists - the ancient Greek philosophers Leucippus, Democritus, and Epicurus, and the Latin poet Lucretius. As the author notes, the idea of elementary particles as the foundation of reality had many opponents throughout history - from Aristotle to Christian theologians and even some nineteenth-century chemists and philosophers. While theists today accept that the evidence for the atomic theory of matter is overwhelming, they reject the atheistic implications of that theory. In conclusion, the author underscores the main point made throughout this work: the total absence of empirical facts and theoretical arguments to support the existence of any component to reality other than atoms and the void can be taken as proof beyond a reasonable doubt that such a component is nowhere to be found.
