Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One in ten Americans suffers from chronic insomnia. Many receive sleeping pills and over-the-counter sleep aids, at an annual cost of over $40 billion. There are many different medicines, in what can seem like a bewildering variety. In this book, Dr. Mendelson draws on his experience of 40 years doing research and treatment of insomnia to explain how sleeping pills work, as well as their benefits and drawbacks, and alternative non-medicine approaches. Written with both scientific rigor and compassion, this lavishly illustrated book is designed for readers with non-technical backgrounds who would like to learn more-- and make better choices-- among the many treatments for insomnia.

Book excerpt: Hypnos (the Greek god of sleep) and Thanatos (death) were the twin sons of Nyx, the goddess of night (Fox, 1964). Hypnos lived in a dusky valley in the land of the Cimerians, watered by Lethe, the river of forgetfulness. He brought sleep to both men and gods, and sometimes sent his sons Morpheus, Icelus, and Phantasus to appear in dreams. At the door of his abode grew poppies and other herbs which induce sleep (Hamilton, 1961). This book deals with these herbs and their subsequent imitations. Before launching into an examination of hypnotics, it might be well to comment briefly on the manner in which this was written, and to acknowledge the help of a number of individuals. My intention was that this be useful not only for the physician or scientist, but also for the student. Thus each chapter contains an introductory section which pro vides background material. Chapter 3, for instance, describes the general principles of drug absorption, distribution, and metabolism before dis cussing the pharmacologic properties of each hypnotic. In addition, each chapter concludes with a section which summarizes the main issues.

Book excerpt: How do drugs get to the market? What controls are there and what procedures for monitoring their effects? And how adequate are the regulators in protecting public health when new drugs have serious side effects? The Therapeutic Nightmare tells the story of the sleeping pill Halcion - a story which is far from over. First marketed in the 1970s, Halcion has been taken by millions of patients around the world. For many years it has been associated with serious adverse effects such as amnesia, hallucinations, aggression and, in extreme cases, homicide. Thirteen years after its first release, it was banned by the British government. It remains on sale in the United States and many other countries. This book explains why patients have come to be exposed to Halcion's risks and examines the corporate interests of the manufacturers, the professional interests of the scientists and medical researchers and the interests of patients in safe and effective medication. It reveals how these contending forces shape the regulatory decision-making process about drug safety. As the number of new drugs and health products grows, a major challenge facing regulators and the medical profession is how to put the interests of public health decisively and consistently above the commercial interests of the drugs industry, while becoming more accountable to patient and consumer organizations.

This is a real-life drama fueled by the performance anxiety that keeps you up all night worrying about being up all night. If you battle nightly dream stealers, you are one of fifty to seventy million American adults with chronic sleep disorders. We live in a take a pill and go to sleep era. Like Pavlovs dogs, insomnia-plagued Americans have been trained to pop a pill to reap a sleep reward, expecting to immediately fall asleep and stay asleep, with little or no effort. The path of least resistance offers an easy way out rather than focusing on the root cause of the insomnia. What do you hope to achieve by taking a sleeping pill? You hope to achieve a blissful state of restful and rejuvenating sleep, allowing you to then work better, think better, and function better the next day. You hope that prescription sleep aids will be a temporary fix and will not result in long-term use or dependence. Expectations and actual experiences may vastly differ, often yielding more disappointing results than anticipated. Your health choices are being unfairly influenced by clever pharmaceutical marketing propaganda, resulting in a destructive drug path plagued with dangerous side effects, interactions, drug-induced diseases, nutrient depletions, and even addiction. If sleeping pills are the problem, Undrugged Sleep is the solution that will help you embark on a personal healing journey. Becoming more aware of sleep drugs health-impairing issues will help motivate you to remove the drug insult, correct the root cause, and ultimately replace the drug with safer natural solutions.
