It is also a resource for Jan-San distributors who are considering using wholesalers as a source for certain lines, particular product types, or at various times throughout the year. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Architecture Constructed explores the central, open secret of architecture: the long-suppressed conflict between arche and teckton-between those who design, and those who build. This unresolved tension has a centuries-old history in the discipline, persisting through Classical and Renaissance times to the present day, and yet it has rarely been addressed through a historical and theoretical lens. In this book, acclaimed architectural theorist Mark Jarzombek examines this tension head-on, and uses it to rethink the nature of the history of architecture. He reveals architecture to be a troubled, interconnected realm, incomplete and unstable, where labor, craft, and occupation are the 'invisible' complements to the work of the architect. Erudite, entertaining, and full of surprising and thought-provoking juxtapositions and challenges, Architecture Constructed is packed with novel insights into the internal conflicts and paradoxes of architecture, and is rich with examples from modern and contemporary practice-including Mies, Koolhaas, Potrc, Hadid, Bawa, Diller + Scofidio-which demonstrate how contemporary architecture inhabits the very same tensions that have riven the discipline since the days of Alberti. This provocative book will stimulate conversations among students, researchers, and designers, as it pushes the boundaries on how we define the professional discipline of architecture and overturns entrenched assumptions about the nature of architectural history and theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional theory of urban finance argues against local redistribution of wealth on the assumption that such action is likely to chase away the relatively wealthy, leaving only the impoverished behind. Nevertheless, Clayton P. Gillette observes, local governments engage in substantial redistribution, both to the wealthy and to the poor. In this thoughtful book, Gillette examines whether recent campaigns to enact "living wage" ordinances and other local redistributive programs represent gaps in the traditional theory or political opportunism. He then investigates the role of the courts in distinguishing between these explanations. The author argues that courts have greater capacity to review local programs than is typically assumed. He concludes that when a single interest group dominates the political process, judicial intervention to determine a program's legal validity may be appropriate. But if the political contest involves competing groups, courts should defer to local political judgments.

Book excerpt: Explaining Growth attempts to compile the most comprehensive assessment of growth in developing and transition countries. The first phase has sought to review and discover broad similarities and comparable experiences in six regions spanning the developing world. In each region, studies were undertaken on sources of growth, markets and growth, microeconomic determinants of growth, and the political economy of growth. These reviews provide the framework for the in-depth country case studies in Phase II. This volume summarizes the main results of the regional analyses and sets the stage for the country studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The redistributive state is fading in Canada. Government programs are no longer offsetting the growth in inequality generated by the market. In this book, leading political scientists, sociologists, and economists point to the failure of public policy to contain surging income inequality. A complex mix of forces has reshaped the politics of social policy, including global economic pressures, ideological change, shifts in the influence of business and labour, changes in the party system, and the decline of equality-seeking civil society organizations. This volume demonstrates that action and inaction policy change and policy drift are at the heart of growing inequality in Canada.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers the occurrence, interpretation and significance of bitumens (hydrocarbon residues) in ore deposits. Bitumens occur with a wide variety of ores, including deposits of base metals, mercury, uranium, gold and other precious metals. The papers included reflect this variety of bitumen occurrences and the potential for obtaining useful data from them. The contributions are written by acknowledged experts in this field, who cover analytical techniques and case studies using diverse petrographic and geochemical approaches which will give ore geologists and geochemists an excellent insight into the interpretation of bitumens during mineral exploration. The large number of plates in particular will help the non-specialist to make good use of the volume through the application to new deposits. This is the most comprehensive set of contributions published on a subject of growing interest; at a time when explorationists are increasingly recognising the occurrence of bitumens in ore deposits and the fact that the evolution of mineralising fluids and hydrocarbon fluids may be closely interlinked.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recognizing the need for an evangelically oriented book to guide believers dealing with the issue of Christianity's relation to society, educator Robert Webber has developed a unique approach to this subject that gives clear solutions to the Christ-culture problem from both a biblical and historical point of view. The biblical material in 'The Secular Saint' presents the social, moral, and cultural concerns of the Judeo-Christian heritage. The historical material then shows how the church in history has either separated from its culture, identified with it, or attempted to transform it. On the basis of these three historical models, Webber argues that there is more than one way for the Christian to live in a responsible relationship with the world. This is a book of principles, not a how-to guidebook. As the author states, My purpose is not to deal with contemporary problems themselves but to give the reader the biblical and historical tools needed to understand and deal with modern issues.
