Book excerpt: Ultrafast spectroscopy experiments show that photosynthetic systems can preserve quantum beats in the process of electronic energy transfer between pigments, even at room temperature. But what does this discovery imply for biology - and for quantum mechanics? This dissertation examines photosynthesis through the tools of quantum information science. We evaluate to what extent photosynthesis can be thought of as a type of quantum technology, and consider how we can apply experimental tools widely used for quantum technologies (state tomography and coherent control) to photosynthesis. Throughout, we use the Fenna-Matthews-Olson (FMO) complex of greens sulfur bacteria as a model photosynthetic pigment-protein complex. In Part I, we evaluate two mechanisms for the possible biological relevance of quantum coherent motion. First, we consider the extent to which dynamics in light-harvesting systems exhibit the quantum speedups characteristic of quantum algorithms and quantum walks. Second, we demonstrate a ratchet effect in electronic energy transfer enabled by partially coherent dynamics. To do so, we build a new model of energy transfer between weakly coupled light-harvesting complexes to understand how electronic coherence arises under natural conditions. In Part II, we present proposals for experimental probes of light harvesting dynamics with ultrafast spectroscopy. We show how the signal from pump-probe spectroscopy can be formally inverted to determine the excited state electronic density matrix. Finally, we examine the feasiblity of coherent control experiments on light-harvesting systems, and provide two realistic targets feasible with present-day technology.

Following the recently obtained structures of a variety of photosynthetic pigment-protein complexes from plants and bacteria our interest in understanding the relation between structure, function and spectroscopy has strongly increased. These data demonstrate a short interpigment distance (of the order of 1 nm or even smaller) and/or a highly symmetric (ring-like) arrangement of pigment molecules in peripheral light-harvesting complexes of photosynthetic bacteria. Books which were devoted to the exciton problem so far mainly considered the spectral properties of molecular crystals. However, the small size of these pigment aggregates in the pigment-protein complexes as well as the role of the protein, which is responsible for the structural arrangement of the complex, clearly will have a dramatic influence on the pigment spectra and exciton dynamics. All these aspects of the problem are considered in this book. Exciton theory is mainly considered for small molecular aggregates (dimers, ring-like structures etc.). Together with the theoretical description of the classical conceptual approach, which mainly deals with polarization properties of the absorption and fluorescence spectra, the nonlinear femtosecond spectroscopy which is widely used for investigations now is also discussed. A large part of the book demonstrates the excitonic effects in a multitude of photosynthetic pigment-protein complexes and how we can understand these properties on the basis of the exciton concept.

Book excerpt: Two-dimensional (2D) electronic spectroscopy has recently emerged as a powerful technique for the study of complex photodynamics in a variety of condensed phase systems. The application of this technique to both photosynthetic pigment-protein complexes and chromophore solutions has provided insight into their intricate excitation energy transfer mechanisms and landscapes. Analysis of beating peak amplitudes in 2D spectra of the Fenna-Matthews-Olson bacteriochlorophyll complex combined with changing lineshapes has revealed signals consistent with excitonic coherence. In addition, the long lifetime of the coherence indicates a reversible, wavelike motion of energy through the complex as opposed to the classical hopping picture. This quantum-mechanical behavior may explain the near unity quantum efficiency of excitation energy transfer observed in networks of photosynthetic complexes. The inclusion of a noncollinear optical parametric amplifier producing broad bandwidth pulses enables the exploration of excitonic coherence in Light Harvesting Complex II, the most abundant antenna complex in higher plants. Long-lived quantum coherence is again observed suggesting this to be a universal phenomenon in natural photosynthetic systems. To expand upon these findings, a coherence power spectrum is produced. This novel technique allows the first direct experimental determination of the excitonic energy levels. In another set of experiments, the building an adaptive, pulse-shaping apparatus allows optimal compression of the broad bandwidth pulses for use in probing the debated electronic structure of [beta]-carotene. Oscillating lineshapes reveal coupling of electronic states to high energy vibrational modes while the short pulses allow the initial dynamics of this system to be studied in unprecedented detail revealing several new features whose origins are still under investigation.

The sophisticated design of the pigment-protein complexes is based on the cooperative network among structural motifs of pigment molecules and amino acid residues in proteins to achieve the remarkable efficiency and speed in light harvesting. The insight from nature's photosynthetic nano-machinery can be translated to an optimal material design. The principle behind such inherent excitation energy transfer dynamics were revealed with the advance of the femtosecond laser technique. One of the examples is the quantum mechanical coherence excitation energy transfer observed by nonlinear photon echo technique. This dissertation presents the investigation of the bacterial reaction center complexes using electronic coherence photon echo spectroscopy. The study focused on elucidating the origin of the coherence signals and identifying quantum mechanical components relevant to the excitation energy transfer. Experimental variables affecting the coherence signals were explored for the excitation energy transfer of photosynthetic bacterial reaction center. The result showed that the vibrational coherence mimics the behavior of the electronic coherence, and the lifetime is near 2 ps. A mutant bacterial reaction center was also examined to confirm the vibrational contribution. A new polarization control experiment indicates that majority of the observed vibrational coherence is from the electronic ground state.
