The engineering ceramics are a class of materials which has over some 50 years found well-established applications based on the materials' chemical stability and wear resistance. The last 20 years have seen intensified efforts to extend applications for these materials into areas traditionally occupied by metals, but in which the typical metallic weaknesses of wear, and of high temperature creep and oxidation, are now creating significant problems. These efforts have, however, in many cases been undermined on the one hand by the inherent ceramic weaknesses of brittleness and flaw sensitivity, and on the other by an inadequate understanding, and control, of the basic ceramic fabrication processes required for the low-cost mass production of relatively complex components. The positive results of the efforts of the last 20 years have been the development of a large new group of ceramic materials believed to possess intrinsic mechanical property advantages, of which the transformation toughened zirconias, and the ceramic matrix composites are good examples, together with improved powder production methods and powder shaping processes.

Ceramic-matrix composites (CMCs) are considered to be the lightweight high-temperature materials for hot-section components in aeroengines with the most potential. To improve the reliability and safety of CMC components during operation, it is necessary to conduct damage and failure mechanism analysis, and to develop models to predict this damage as well as fracture over lifetime - mechanical hysteresis is a key damage behavior in fiber-reinforced CMCs. The appearance of hysteresis is due to a composite’s internal damage mechanisms and modes, such as, matrix cracking, interface debonding, and fiber failure. Micromechanical damage models and constitutive models are developed to predict mechanical hysteresis in different CMCs. Effects of a composite’s constituent properties, stress level, and the damage states of the mechanical hysteresis behavior of CMCs are also discussed. This book also covers damage mechanisms, damage models and micromechanical constitutive models for the mechanical hysteresis of CMCs. This book will be a great resource for students, scholars, material scientists and engineering designers who would like to understand and master the mechanical hysteresis behavior of fiber-reinforced CMCs.

It occurs naturally in meteorites, but in very small amounts and is not in a useable state as an industrial material. For industrial require ments, large amounts of silicon carbide must be synthesized by solid state reactions at high temperatures. Silicon carbide has been used for grinding and as an abrasive material since its discovery. During World War II, silicon carbide was used as a heating element; however, it was difficult to obtain high density sintered silicon carbide bodies. In 1974, S. Prochazka reported that the addition of small amounts of boron compounds and carbide were effective in the sintering process to obtain high density. It was then possible to produce high density sintered bodies by pressureless sintering methods in ordinary atmosphere. Since this development, silicon carbide has received great attention as one of the high temperature structural ceramic materials. Since the 1970s, many research papers have appeared which report studies of silicon carbide and silicon nitride for structural ceramics.
