Book Synopsis Multiple Parton Interactions At The Lhc by : Paolo Bartalini
Download or read book Multiple Parton Interactions At The Lhc written by Paolo Bartalini and published by World Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-02 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many high-energy collider experiments (including the current Large Hadron Collider at CERN) involve the collision of hadrons. Hadrons are composite particles consisting of partons (quarks and gluons), and this means that in any hadron-hadron collision there will typically be multiple collisions of the constituents — i.e. multiple parton interactions (MPI). Understanding the nature of the MPI is important in terms of searching for new physics in the products of the scatters, and also in its own right to gain a greater understanding of hadron structure. This book aims at providing a pedagogical introduction and a comprehensive review of different research lines linked by an involvement of MPI phenomena. It is written by pioneers as well as young leading scientists, and reviews both experimental findings and theoretical developments, discussing also the remaining open issues.

Book Synopsis High Jet Multiplicity Physics at the LHC by : Mireia Crispín Ortuzar
Download or read book High Jet Multiplicity Physics at the LHC written by Mireia Crispín Ortuzar and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-25 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes research in two different areas of state-of-the-art hadron collider physics, both of which are of central importance in the field of particle physics. The first part of the book focuses on the search for supersymmetric particles called gluinos. The book subsequently presents a set of precision measurements of “multi-jet” collision events, which involve large numbers of newly created particles, and are among the dominant processes at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Now that a Higgs boson has been discovered at the LHC, the existence (or non-existence) of supersymmetric particles is of the utmost interest and significance, both theoretically and experimentally. In addition, multi-jet collision events are an important background process for a wide range of analyses, including searches for supersymmetry.
Book Synopsis Jet Physics at the LHC by : Klaus Rabbertz
Download or read book Jet Physics at the LHC written by Klaus Rabbertz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-11 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the latest experimental results on jet physics from proton-proton collisons at the LHC. Jets allow to determine the strong coupling constant over a wide range of energies up the highest ones possible so far, and to constrain the gluon parton distribution of the proton, both of which are important uncertainties on theory predictions in general and for the Higgs boson in particular.A novel approach in this book is to categorize the examined quantities according to the types of absolute, ratio, or shape measurements and to explain in detail the advantages and differences. Including numerous illustrations and tables the physics message and impact of each observable is clearly elaborated.
Book Synopsis Study of Double Parton Scattering Using Four-Jet Scenarios by : Paolo Gunnellini
Download or read book Study of Double Parton Scattering Using Four-Jet Scenarios written by Paolo Gunnellini and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-08-24 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis addresses in a very new and elegant way several measurements and the extraction of so-called double parton scattering. The new and elegant way lies in the combination of measurements and a very smart extraction of double parton scattering results, which is easy to apply and overcomes many of the technical difficulties of older methods. Many new phenomena in particle physics can be observed when particles are collided at the highest energies; one of the highlights in recent years was the discovery of the Higgs boson at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. Understanding the production mechanism of the Higgs boson at the LHC requires detailed knowledge of the physics of proton-proton collisions. When the density of partons in the protons becomes large, there is a non-negligible probability that more than one parton participates in the interaction and the so-called double parton scattering becomes important. In some cases very particular final state signatures can be observed, which can be regarded as an indication of such double partonic scattering and where the different interactions can be separated. Such multiple partonic interactions play an important role when precise predictions from known processes are required.

Book Synopsis Multiparticle Dynamics by : V. Simák
Download or read book Multiparticle Dynamics written by V. Simák and published by American Institute of Physics. This book was released on 2006-04-25 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ISMD 2005 conference reviewed and updated the theoretical and experimental understanding of multiparticle production in high energy collisions. About half of the papers discussed collisions of ultra-relativistic nuclei with recent results from RHIC. In addition, some intriguing results from HERA and Tevatron colliders were presented and future experiments were discussed as well. Following the ISMD conference, the Workshop on Particle Correlations and Femtoscopy was held for the first time. This new series of regular workshops presents a critical and thorough analysis of the latest results on particle interferometry in high energy heavy ion collisions. Thefocus on this rather narrow subject was stimulated by a wealth of new data arriving steadily from the RHIC and SPS experiments.
Book Synopsis Looking Inside Jets by : Simone Marzani
Download or read book Looking Inside Jets written by Simone Marzani and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-11 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This concise primer reviews the latest developments in the field of jets. Jets are collinear sprays of hadrons produced in very high-energy collisions, e.g. at the LHC or at a future hadron collider. They are essential to and ubiquitous in experimental analyses, making their study crucial. At present LHC energies and beyond, massive particles around the electroweak scale are frequently produced with transverse momenta that are much larger than their mass, i.e., boosted. The decay products of such boosted massive objects tend to occupy only a relatively small and confined area of the detector and are observed as a single jet. Jets hence arise from many different sources and it is important to be able to distinguish the rare events with boosted resonances from the large backgrounds originating from Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). This requires familiarity with the internal properties of jets, such as their different radiation patterns, a field broadly known as jet substructure. This set of notes begins by providing a phenomenological motivation, explaining why the study of jets and their substructure is of particular importance for the current and future program of the LHC, followed by a brief but insightful introduction to QCD and to hadron-collider phenomenology. The next section introduces jets as complex objects constructed from a sequential recombination algorithm. In this context some experimental aspects are also reviewed. Since jet substructure calculations are multi-scale problems that call for all-order treatments (resummations), the bases of such calculations are discussed for simple jet quantities. With these QCD and jet physics ingredients in hand, readers can then dig into jet substructure itself. Accordingly, these notes first highlight the main concepts behind substructure techniques and introduce a list of the main jet substructure tools that have been used over the past decade. Analytic calculations are then provided for several families of tools, the goal being to identify their key characteristics. In closing, the book provides an overview of LHC searches and measurements where jet substructure techniques are used, reviews the main take-home messages, and outlines future perspectives.
