Book excerpt: Seek Shelter. These two words resonate with many and, in some ways, have become the basis of why we do what we do. Though much of our preparedness plans seek to shelter us in a less literal way the basis of the phrase still holds true.We shelter ourselves from starvation and dehydration with food storage and water catchment. We shelter ourselves from violence with things like guns and martial arts. We shelter ourselves from ignorance by consuming truthful and forward thinking news. What about truly sheltering ourselves inside an underground shelter for survival? For those who live in tornado alley an underground shelter is a necessity. If you have an F5 tornado bearing down on you its imperative that you have a place underground to stay safe. Otherwise you will be beat to death by debris or crushed under the falling structure. Let's consider today's volatile world for a moment. What place does an underground shelter have in your own personal preps? You see, there are many ways that a shelter can be used. It doesn't have to be a tomb that your family climbs into and stays in for 6 months while the world falls apart above. No. The underground shelter can be utilized in many circumstance. We all have terrible thoughts about even short term martial law. Imagine escaping for a week to your underground shelter and avoiding the jackboot of the federal government. In this book, we are going to discuss owning an underground shelter of your own. We will take the process from choosing a location all the way to outfitting and maintaining that shelter. There will be some tough decisions to make in between but you will find that choosing materials and laying out the internals of your shelter can be rewarding. The specific subjects that we are going to cover include the following:1. Choosing Location2. Choosing Materials3. DIY or Outsource?4. Layout5. Amenities and Resources6. Stocking the Shelter7. Developing Your Process8. Maintaining the Shelter Another great question for bunker building is the idea of DIY or outsourcing the installation. There are many benefits to both and we will spend an entire chapter on just this topic. The underground shelter offers you another option in times of disaster. Whether we are facing a passing fit of civil unrest or even a bombardment from another nation in times of war the underground shelter can serve you as a short-term solution as well.

Book excerpt: Since prehistory, bunkers have been built as protection from cataclysmic social and environmental forces, and as places of power and transformation. Today, the bunker has become the extreme expression of our greatest fears- from pandemics to climate change and nuclear war. And once you look, it doesn't take long to start seeing bunkers everywhere. In Bunker, acclaimed urban explorer and cultural geographer Bradley Garrett explores the global and rapidly growing movement of 'prepping' for social and environmental collapse, or 'Doomsday'. From the 'dread merchants' hustling safe spaces in the American mid-West to eco-fortresses in Thailand, from geoscrapers to armoured mobile bunkers, Bunker is a brilliant, original and never less than deeply disturbing story from the frontlines of the way we live now, an illuminating reflection on our age of disquiet and dread that brings it into new, sharp focus. The bunker, Garrett shows, is all around us, in malls, airports, gated communities, the vehicles we drive. Most of all, he shows, it's in our minds.

Book excerpt: From the author of Living on the Edge and Barbed Wire, Barricades, and Bunkers comes another information-packed guidebook for today's survivalists, Emergency Air: For Shelter-in-Place Preppers and Home-Built Bunkers. This new book offers a breath of fresh air on a subject about which very little information is available. It won't matter how well you plan or how much food, water, and other supplies you have stored and waiting for your neighborhood to become a nuclear fallout zone. Without breathable air, you will die! Leaving it for others to compile the lists of bullets, beans, and Band-Aids in their disaster-relief books, F.J. Bohan details how to safely ventilate an underground bunker or shelter-in-place room, sealed with duct tape and plastic sheeting, so you can escape the airborne particulate threats of anthrax, nuclear fallout, dirty bombs, biological and pandemic agents, or other airborne threats. This book educates you about all the variables involved in providing fresh air to your shelter before the need arises, including passive and active ventilation, air pumps, plumbing the bunker, air filters, and gas masks. After studying Emergency Air, you can breathe easier knowing you have done all you can to ensure your family's emergency air supply during a chemical, biological, ¬radiological, or nuclear emergency.

Book excerpt: We have all heard of people talking about a doomsday, or watched the TV show Doomsday Preppers. We have heard people called "Preppers", or "What Iffers". People have been talking about some sort of "End of the World" scenario, for decades. Even the United States government has many bunkers around the country, some of which have been bought by ordinary citizens and even preppers. Some of us are concerned something may happen sooner than later. I have heard more and more people talking about the possibility of an imminent disaster. Some people worry about different possible scenarios. For example; economic collapse, societal collapse, civil unrest, electromagnetic pulse, weather destruction, war, fire, nuclear attacks, terrorist attacks, fuel shortages, pandemics, geomagnetic reversal, etc. Many people are preparing for these scenarios of which they are concerned. It is estimated in the United States of America, approximately ten percent of the population are Preppers to one degree or another. No one knows if or when, one or more problems will occur. There is no way to predict a specific occurrence or time factor, and my crystal ball broke, so I cannot help with your prognostication. The best we can do is to be prepared for any eventuality. This is why I personally (and many others) believe an underground concrete bunker is the best idea. As I will explain, this Bunker will give you the best protection possible for the most scenarios. One need not be a conspiracy theorist to be concerned. People may think "Doomsday Preppers", or "What Iffers", as we are often called, are "nut jobs." However, when TSHTF, we will be the ones who others will come to, since we will be prepared.

I really built this shelter in 2002 but never thought to take any pictures of it.2) How do you know it would resist radioactive fallout? I'm a nuclear engineer and I designed the shelter, the materials, and thicknesses from online materials anyone can use. Book excerpt: Underground facilities are used extensively by many nations to conceal and protect strategic military functions and weapons' stockpiles. Because of their depth and hardened status, however, many of these strategic hard and deeply buried targets could only be put at risk by conventional or nuclear earth penetrating weapons (EPW). Recently, an engineering feasibility study, the robust nuclear earth penetrator program, was started by DOE and DOD to determine if a more effective EPW could be designed using major components of existing nuclear weapons. This activity has created some controversy about, among other things, the level of collateral damage that would ensue if such a weapon were used. To help clarify this issue, the Congress, in P.L. 107-314, directed the Secretary of Defense to request from the NRC a study of the anticipated health and environmental effects of nuclear earth-penetrators and other weapons and the effect of both conventional and nuclear weapons against the storage of biological and chemical weapons. This report provides the results of those analyses. Based on detailed numerical calculations, the report presents a series of findings comparing the effectiveness and expected collateral damage of nuclear EPW and surface nuclear weapons under a variety of conditions.
