Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under Twelve Flags IT was a cold stormy night in late winter when a young girl, standing at the window of her room, said: Who would think, Lizette, that our bright, beautiful Paris could be the dismal place this weather makes it seem? The good Lord, who sends all sorts of weather, gives Paris only its share of cold. Old Lizette spoke very grimly; for some reason she had been solemn all day. Lizette was usually cheerful; so Elise fancied that she also felt the depressing influence of the long storm, for all her moral precepts. Oh! But Paris is so lovely in the summer, when the streets are bright, and the flower markets like gardens of beauty! Don't you long for a day under the trees in the Bois? Life is not all flowers and frolics, as you will find only too soon, my Petite! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. As soon as the victory was won, the flag of the vanquished was torn down, and the flag of the victor was raised. Two thousand years ago a new king sent his army into the world. It was a small army with no guns and no battleships, and in it were only twelve men. They were commanded to go first to the lands nearest to them and then out into all the world. After the voyage of Henry Hudson, a company of Swedes made a settlement on the Delaware River. This had been planned by the great Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden. That colony will be the jewel of my kingdom, he said; but the Lion of the North was Slain in battle, and his twelve-year-old daughter Chris tina had become queen. That is why the loyal Swedes named their little fortification Fort Christiana, and over it they raised the flag of their country, a blue banner with a yellow cross. Book Synopsis Under Three Flags by : Benedict Richard O'Gorman Anderson
Download or read book Under Three Flags written by Benedict Richard O'Gorman Anderson and published by Verso. This book was released on 2005 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this sparkling new work, Benedict Anderson provides a radical recasting of themes from Imagined Communities, his classic book on nationalism, through an exploration of fin-de-siecle politics and culture that spans the Caribbean, Imperial Europe and the South China Sea. A jewelled pomegranate packed with nitroglycerine is primed to blow away Manila's 19th-century colonial elite at the climax of El Filibusterismo, whose author, the great political novelist Jose Rizal, was executed in 1896 by the Spanish authorities in the Philippines at the age of 35. Anderson explores the impact of avant-garde European literature and politics on Rizal and his contemporary, the pioneering folklorist Isabelo de los Reyes, who was imprisoned in Manila after the violent uprisings of 1896 and later incarcerated, together with Catalan anarchists, in the prison fortress of Montjuich in Barcelona. On his return to the Philippines, by now under American occupation, Isabelo formed the first militant trade unions under the influence of Malatesta and Bakunin. Anderson considers the complex intellectual interactions of these young Filipinos with the new "science" of anthropology in Germany and Austro-Hungary, and with post-Communard experimentalists in Paris, against a background of militant anarchism in Spain, France, Italy and the Americas, Jose Marti's armed uprising in Cuba and anti-imperialist protests in China and Japan. In doing so, he depicts the dense intertwining of anarchist internationalism and radical anti-colonialism. Under Three Flags is a brilliantly original work on the explosive history of national independence and global politics.

When the smoke cleared away that Was circling round him out of a great meerschaum-bowl, it showed a face of as much delicacy and brilliancy as a woman's, handsome, thorough-bred, languid, non chalant, with a certain latent recklessness under the impassive calm of habit, and a singular softness given to the large dark hazel eyes by the unusual length of the lashes over them. His features were exceedingly fair - fair as the fairest girl's; his hair was of the softest, silkiest, brightest chesnut; his mouth very beautifully shaped; on the whole, with a certain gentle, mournful love-me look that his eyes had with them, it was no wonder that great ladies and gay lionnes alike gave him the palm as the handsomest man In all the Household Regiments - not even ex cepting that splendid golden-haired Colossus, his oldest friend and closest comrade, known as the Seraph. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under Three Flags: With the Red Cross in Belgium, France and Serbia The outbreaks of the war found us peacefully motoring through Germany. The news of mobilisation reached us on the outskirts of Berlin, and burst upon us, with something of its full meaning, in the Friedrich Strasse, where our road was blocked by vast numbers of students marching through the streets and shouting, "Nach Paris!" These tumultuous demonstrations continued both day and night, during our forced stay in Berlin. Sleep was out of the questions, as until daybreak the city rang with tramping footsteps, and the thunderous strains of "Die Wacht am Rhein" and "Deutschland, Deutschland uber Alles!" Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Under the Allied Flags: A Boy's Adventures in the International War Against the Boxers and China In pursuance of a desire to present to young people a series of adventures against a background of recent historical happenings the author of this book follows his "In Defence of the Flag" and "With Lawton and Roberts" with a tale of the war in China, thus making a series of adventure stories that deal in due succession with the war with Spain, the revolt in the Philippines, the conflict in the Transvaal, and the siege and relief of the legations at Pekin. As in the preceding stories, "Under the Allied Flags" does not seek to go into the discussion of world problems and international rights; the author has endeavored simply to tell a story of danger and adventure, introducing to the readers of the companion stories, some familiar friends, and showing how pluck and heedlessness, valor and carelessness may lead a healthy and well-meaning American lad into scrapes and experiences that only a boy could blunder into and out of. Book Synopsis Asian Classics on the Victorian Bookshelf by : Alexander Bubb
Download or read book Asian Classics on the Victorian Bookshelf written by Alexander Bubb and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-14 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interest among Victorian readers in classical literature from Asia has been greatly underestimated. The popularity of the Arabian Nights and The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam is well documented. Yet this was also an era in which freethinkers consulted the Quran, in which schoolchildren were given abridgements of the Ramayana to read, in which names like 'Kalidasa' and 'Firdusi' were carved on the façades of public libraries, and in which women's book clubs discussed Japanese poetry. But for the most part, such readers were not consulting the specialist publications of scholarly orientalists. What then were the translations that catalysed these intercultural encounters? Based on a unique methodology marrying translation theory with empirical techniques developed by historians of reading, this book shines light for the first time on the numerous amateur translators or 'popularizers', who were responsible for making these texts accessible and disseminating them to the Victorian general readership. Asian Classics on the Victorian Bookshelf explains the process whereby popular translations were written, published, distributed to bookshops and libraries, and ultimately consumed by readers. It uses the working papers and correspondence of popularizers to demonstrate their techniques and motivations, while the responses of contemporary readers are traced through the pencil marginalia they left behind in dozens of original copies. In spite of their typically limited knowledge of source-languages, Asian Classics argues that popularizers produced versions more respectful of the complexity, cultural difference, and fundamental untranslatability of Asian texts than the professional orientalists whose work they were often adapting. The responses of their readers, likewise, frequently deviated from interpretive norms, and it is proposed that this combination of eccentric translators and unorthodox readers triggered 'flights of translation', whereby historical individuals can be seen to escape the hegemony of orientalist forms of knowledge.
