Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a study of literature in India in the context of recent discussions on modernity and its theoretical extensions such as the everyday and the social imaginary. It is a critique of the aesthetics and politics of modernity as they are embodied in Indian bhasha literature of the past two centuries. The primary objective of the book is to explore the trajectory of modernity after Indian literature encountered colonialism in the early 19th century. The intricate ways in which the bhasha imagination negotiated questions around concepts such as colonialism, aesthetics, the literary, the historical, and the social, have received focused attention in the analysis. Although the study acknowledges the European provenance of modernity as a historical idea, it also recognizes the inherent complexity of the concept and its equivocal connotations when used with reference to the polyphonic bhasha communities in India. Theoretical issues debated in relation to modernity such as its conceptual affinities with the western enlightenment project, its ideological investment in European aesthetics, and its implication for the evolution of what might be called the hermetic aesthetic are significant to this study. The work also examines the regional strengths of the social imaginary that render a conventionally conceived modernity inadequate in explaining the uniquely modern strengths of the Indian bhasha imagination.
Book Synopsis No Presents Please by : Jayant Kaikini
Download or read book No Presents Please written by Jayant Kaikini and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2020-07-28 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For readers of Jhumpa Lahiri and Rohinton Mistry, as well as Lorrie Moore and George Saunders, here are stories on the pathos and comedy of small–town migrants struggling to build a life in the big city, with the dream world of Bollywood never far away. Jayant Kaikini’s gaze takes in the people in the corners of Mumbai—a bus driver who, denied vacation time, steals the bus to travel home; a slum dweller who catches cats and sells them for pharmaceutical testing; a father at his wit’s end who takes his mischievous son to a reform institution. In this metropolis, those who seek find epiphanies in dark movie theaters, the jostle of local trains, and even in roadside keychains and lost thermos flasks. Here, in the shade of an unfinished overpass, a factory–worker and her boyfriend browse wedding invitations bearing wealthy couples’ affectations—”no presents please”—and look once more at what they own. Translated from the Kannada by Tejaswini Niranjana, these resonant stories, recently awarded the DSC Prize for South Asian Literature, take us to photo framers, flower markets, and Irani cafes, revealing a city trading in fantasies while its strivers, eating once a day and sleeping ten to a room, hold secret ambitions close.

Download or read book One Part Woman written by Perumal Murugan and published by Grove Press. This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “intimate and affecting” novel of an Indian couple’s quest for a child that sparked national conversations about caste and female empowerment (Laila Lalami, New York Times Book Review). Set in South India during the British colonial period, One Part Woman tells the story of Kali and Ponna, a married couple unable to conceive. The predicament is of major concern for their families—and the crowing amusement of Kali’s male friends. From making offerings at different temples to circumambulating a mountain supposed to cure barren women, Kali and Ponna try everything to solve the problem. But a more radical plan is required. The annual chariot festival, a celebration of the god Maadhorubaagan, who is part male and part female, may provide the answer. On the eighteenth night of the festival, the rules of marriage are relaxed, and consensual sex between unmarried men and women is overlooked, for all men are considered gods. The festival may be the solution to Kali and Ponna’s problem, but it soon threatens to drive the couple apart as much as to bring them together. Wryly amusing and deeply poignant, One Part Woman is a powerful exploration of a loving marriage strained by the expectations of others, and an attack on the rigid rules of caste and tradition that continue to constrict opportunity and happiness. Longlisted for the National Book Award

It is hard to keep wanting. waiting for your first glance, Your first gaze, your first sight. Falling in love under Waterloo's clock. Believe me, love, it is love at first sight. I am early, really, you are not delayed, Falling in love under Waterloo's clock. Believe me, love, it is love at first sight. I am early, really in love, you are not delayed. Always looking over the crowd, over their shoulders. Searching for you, to see you coming. Waiting under the Waterloo's clock, Looking for your first sight, your first gaze. Sunny sunrises, since sunrise my heartbeats racing with time clock. Waiting for only you under Waterloo's clock. Falling in love under Waterloo's clock. Believe me, love, it is love at first sight. Seeing you into your deep sea blue eyes, Falling in love under Waterloo's clock. Blood rushing into my heart like flooding down the rivers, flooding all, Clearing all for your entrance, flowers bloom and my love flourish. Believe me love, it is really love at first sight. Your entrance is solace to thy soul And your beauty is beyond compare With open hair of fresh air, with lovely eyes, Reddish ravishing dress, ravishing my heartbeats. Your smile is like the monsoon sun of solace. Falling in love, believe me love. Believe me, love, it is love at first sight. Falling in love under Waterloo's clock. Believe me, love, it is love at first sight. I talk about you in my sleep. I talk to the mirror, asking about you, to tell me. You are coming, coming at noon, Just to see you under Waterloo's clock. To tell me, to take the first step to go round and round Take the seven steps round the fire, the fire of love. Falling in love under Waterloo's clock. Believe me, love, it is love at first sight. I am early, really love, you are not delayed, I am early, really love, you are not delayed, I am early, really in love, you are not delayed. Love birds with love bites flying over Waterloo's clock. Oh yeah, Oh yeah. My first baby, the first kiss of my first love. The first kiss of my first love, oh yeah. Oh yeah, Oh yeah. My first baby, the first kiss of my first love. The first kiss of my first love, oh yeah. Falling in love under Waterloo's clock. Believe me, love, it is love at first sight. I am early, really, love you are not delayed,

Book Synopsis Love Is Not a Word by : Debotri Dhar
Download or read book Love Is Not a Word written by Debotri Dhar and published by Speaking Tiger Books. This book was released on 2020-08 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description- 'Love: more than pursuit, less than perfection, ' writes Debotri Dhar in her introduction to this book, and reminds us that love/desire is as much art as accident, and as full of light and clarity as it is of darkness and confusion. In the twelve essays that comprise this thoroughly engaging, eclectic collection, scholars, critics, storytellers and journalists examine some of the myriad aspects of this emotion-its 'complexities, in-betweenness'; its 'being and becoming'. In the opening essays, we get a historical and cultural perspective on 'traditional love' through discussions of 'swayamvara, arranged marriages, and desi romance'; ruminations on the immortal love of Radha and Krishna; and the story of a sexually desiring and desired courtesan or nagarvadhu. In the essays that follow, the politics of love is discussed and debated from a variety of angles: from the love jihad campaign against inter-religious marriage, to a critique of the savarna gaze in Indian cultural iconography and its meaning for inter-caste love; from India's legal battle to decriminalize same-sex love, to the subversive threat in single women's self-love. The book also includes intriguing and exquisite portrayals of love in literature-from Urdu shayari and the barahmasa (songs of longing for the twelve months of the year), to the city fictions of love through Rome, Sydney, Buenos Aires, Istanbul and Delhi. With essays by some of the most distinctive writers of our time, this delightful, wide-ranging volume certainly suggests that love is not just a word.
