Download or read book Katherine Parr written by Katherine Parr and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2011-06-15 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the extent that she is popularly known, Katherine Parr (1512–48) is the woman who survived King Henry VIII as his sixth and last wife. She merits far greater recognition, however, on several other fronts. Fluent in French, Italian, and Latin, Parr also began, out of necessity, to learn Spanish when she ascended to the throne in 1543. As Henry’s wife and queen of England, she was a noted patron of the arts and music and took a personal interest in the education of her stepchildren, Princesses Mary and Elizabeth and Prince Edward. Above all, Parr commands interest for her literary labors: she was the first woman to publish under her own name in English in England. For this new edition, Janel Mueller has assembled the four publications attributed to Parr—Psalms or Prayers, Prayers or Meditations, The Lamentation of a Sinner, and a compilation of prayers and Biblical excerpts written in her hand—as well as her extensive correspondence, which is collected here for the first time. Mueller brings to this volume a wealth of knowledge of sixteenth-century English culture. She marshals the impeccable skills of a textual scholar in rendering Parr’s sixteenth-century English for modern readers and provides useful background on the circumstances of and references in Parr’s letters and compositions. Given its scope and ambition, Katherine Parr: Complete Works and Correspondence will be an event for the English publishing world and will make an immediate contribution to the fields of sixteenth-century literature, reformation studies, women’s writing, and Tudor politics.

Download or read book Tudor Roses written by Alice Starmore and published by Courier Dover Publications. This book was released on 2017-02-15 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of Tudor Roses presents new and reimagined garments based on the original Tudor Roses published in 1998. Alice Starmore looks to historical female figures of the Tudor Dynasty as inspiration for her stunning knitwear, and her modernization of traditional Fair Isle and Aran patterns has created a sensation in the knitting world. Through garment design, Starmore and her daughter Jade tell the stories of fourteen women connected with the Tudor dynasty. They weave a narrative around the known facts of their subjects' lives using photography, art, and the only medium through which the Tudor women could leave a lasting physical record in their world — needlework. Tudor Roses includes fourteen patterns for sweaters and other wearables that follow the chronological order of the Tudor dynasty. A different model portrays each of the Tudor women, from Elizabeth Woodville, grandmother of Henry VIII, through Mary, Queen of Scots. The stunning design and photography appeals to knitters seeking designs that offer an attractive balance of historic and modern elements.
Book Synopsis Parr Taken by : Christopher J. Farmer
Download or read book Parr Taken written by Christopher J. Farmer and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2002-03-16 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Parr Taken, the first book of The Second Neoluzian War epic fantasy series, one thousand years have passed since the end of Neoluzias most destructive war, the War of Cleansing. The War of Cleansing was so destructive that the good races of the land ordered the confiscation of all magical items and their components so that such a war could never be repeated. These instruments of war were buried in tombs, vaults and hidden throughout Neoluzia, forgotten by the races over the centuries. Restrictions on magic followed, ensuring the knowledge of the old magic was reduced. In time, the races lived together peacefully, their new history one of cooperation and mutual understanding. However, the drums of war are once again beating in Neoluzia, for the good races are unaware that their Orc neighbors to the north have been busy preparing, gathering and marching. Darius, a wizard that fought in the War of Cleansing and the most powerful spell caster to ever walk the land of Neoluzia, senses the danger. Darius helped cast down Antiluminous in the first war, defeating the Orcs, but that was one thousand years ago. Now old and deteriorating, Darius must demand the aid of a human from Earth, a stranger with no understanding of Neoluzia and its history.
