Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The issue of Muslim women’s rights never seems outdated and has become trendy in the post-9/11 environment. That is, the mainstream media and Western politicians often view Muslim women as victims of male-patriarchy and frequently justify Western involvement in the Middle East and in other Muslim majority counties at least in part to "rescue" women. Within this realm, Nawal El Saadawi is a famous Egyptian writer whose writings focus on the struggle of Muslim women and are widely read in the Middle East and many Western societies as well. Because of her bold feminist views on politics, religions, and gender, she is described as the "Simone de Beauvoir of the Arab world." After the death of El Saadawi in 2021, a flurry of arguments and criticism in the Egyptian press and women's press around the world is created in which different social media platforms were filled with numerous comments and discussions of her writings and arguments. Whereas some mourned El Saadawi and her dedication to women’s issues, others celebrated her death, wishing her the worst punishment in the afterlife for what they described as her "destructive thoughts." This monograph genuinely analyzes her views on five controversial issues – marriage, polygamy, divorce, inheritance rights, and veiling – in light of Qur’anic exegeses offered by two classical scholars (i.e., Muhammad ibn Jarir Al Tabari and Ismail ibn Umar Ibn Kathir) and two contemporary Muslim feminists (i.e., Amina Wadud and Azizah Al Hibri). By taking a critical look at her views, the book contributes not only to this ongoing debate but adds value to assessing El Saadawi's work and helps readers gain a greater understanding of her writings as well. It also enables readers to comprehend the current tension between feminism and Islam by understanding the perspectives of both sides. Since El Saadawi’s writings are available in the Western countries, the book would appeal to academics, researchers on Islam and gender and Middle Eastern women, as well as to lay audiences interested in women and gender in Muslim societies.

Book excerpt: The Civil Rights Movement is a milestone in American history that can help us think more clearly about today's movement for social and political change, which can sometimes be influenced or misguided by the media. We all must seize the opportunity to shape our own post-civil rights era and redefine what civil rights means to us today and in the future. Inspiring African-American Women of the Civil Rights Movement 18th, 19th, and 20th Centuries is just one glimpse into the lives of twenty very brave and courageous African-American women, who fought to protect the civil rights of African-Americans and ultimately changed the course of history. As you read this book, I will: ? Give a more in-depth understanding about the true meaning of the freedom and equality in America. ? Provide an awareness of the struggles of the civil rights movement to the racial injustices of the Jim Crow laws. ? Bring attention to important relationships that developed along the way of each womans journey based on the civil rights cause. ? Depict a timeline of events of each crusaders journey. Above all: ? Highlight the incredible accomplishments of African-American women, who have contributed to our nations greatness even in the face of certain danger and personal tragedy in the name of freedom and equality. Be inspired by the Civil Rights Movement and embrace all that African-American history has to offer because it truly is an important part of American history. The Civil Rights Movement challenged racism in America and because of civil rights crusaders like Rosa Parks and Harriet Tubman, the country is a more just and humane society for us all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the "everything" women's suffrage and Nineteenth Amendment book, coming just as the country celebrates the centenary of the constitutional amendment that finally brought the vote to all American women. Women's Suffrage: The Complete Guide to the Nineteenth Amendment tells the dramatic story of American women's long fight for the vote and passage of the Nineteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. A veritable library on all things to do with suffrage and the Nineteenth Amendment, this reference tells the heroic stories of suffragists and brings to life the ideas and deeds of the organizations that made suffrage possible. Along the way, the book delves into less well-known stories, like the experiences of African American women during the fight for suffrage, the role of labor in the suffrage movement, and the special role of Western states in the fight for voting equality. The material analyzes key moments in the suffrage fight. A comprehensive document section brings to life the arguments for and against suffrage. Included among many primary sources are Jane Addams's provocative "If Men Were Seeking the Franchise" (1913), Carrie Chapman Catt's "Address to Congress on Women's Suffrage" (1917), and many more speeches, laws, and documents of all types.

Book excerpt: An "impeccably researched and beautifully written" biography of Lady Margaret Beaufort, matriarch of the Tudor dynasty (Tracy Borman, author of The Private Lives of the Tudors and Elizabeth's Women). In 1485, Henry VII became the first Tudor king of England. His victory owed much to his mother, Lady Margaret Beaufort. Over decades and across countries, Margaret had schemed to install her son on the throne and end the War of the Roses. Margaret's extraordinarily close relationship with Henry, coupled with her role in political and ceremonial affairs, ensured that she was treated -- and behaved -- as a queen in all but name. Against a lavish backdrop of pageantry and ambition, court intrigue and war, historian Nicola Tallis illuminates how a dynamic, brilliant woman orchestrated the rise of the Tudors.
