Book Synopsis Adapting to Climate Uncertainty in African Agriculture by : Stephen Whitfield
Download or read book Adapting to Climate Uncertainty in African Agriculture written by Stephen Whitfield and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-20 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Future climatic and agro-ecological changes in Africa are uncertain and associated with high degrees of spatial and temporal variability and this change is differently simulated within divergent climate-crop models and in controlled crop breeding stations. Furthermore, uncertainty emerges in local contexts, not just in response to climatic systems, but to social, economic, and political systems, and often with implications for the appropriateness and adoption of technologies or the success of alternative cropping systems. This book examines the challenges of adaptation in smallholder farming in Africa, analysing the social, economic, political and climatic uncertainties that impact on agriculture in the region and the range of solutions proposed. Drawing on case studies of genetically modified crops, conservation agriculture, and other 'climate smart' solutions in eastern and southern Africa, the book identifies how uncertainties are framed 'from above' as well experienced 'from below', by farmers themselves. It provides a compelling insight into why ideas about adaptation emerge, from whom, and with what implications. This book offers a unique perspective and will be highly relevant to students of climate change adaptation, food security and poverty alleviation, as well as policy-makers and field practitioners in international development and agronomy.

Download or read book An Empirical Investigation of Farmers Behavior Under Uncertainty written by Robert A. McGuire and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study, first published in 1985, aims to provide objective measures of the risks associated with various crops and livestock in the late nineteenth century and to examine two important issues in American economic history. Knowledge of these risks if a necessity to the profession, if analyses of the uncertainties of postbellum agriculture are to continue. Without this knowledge, assertions which have little or no empirical content will continue to be made. This title will be of great interest to students of economics and agriculture.

Book Synopsis Uncertainty And Chaos In Indian Farming by : Sankar Kr. Acharya
Download or read book Uncertainty And Chaos In Indian Farming written by Sankar Kr. Acharya and published by New India Publishing Agency. This book was released on 2023-04-26 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian agriculture at large has been on trajectory of grand uncertainty. The brunt of climate change, sharp undulation in productivity, unpredictability in market price, the consistent up rise in cost of cultivation and downfall of net return are amounting to what we may call the grand uncertainty. Uncertainty is an inevitable character of any system where most of the contributory factors are either unpredictable or unfathomable. The higher is the complexity, the lesser would be the resilience, and higher would be the uncertainty. Agricultural production system, as it is managed in Indian condition, is the most vulnerable to a plethora of uncertainties. Mostly managed in an open air rain fed conditions, complex-diverse-risk prone, it has been exposed to weather and resource uncertainties, market volatility, poor access to technology and a fragile input delivery mechanism. Indian Agriculture is now at a crossroad and gets confronted by uncertainty and unpredictability. The growth rate of food production runs just marginally above population growth. The book has uniquely dealt with a basket of perceived uncertainties that makes farmers and economy reel under stress and risk. The world’s largest agrarian economy is being managed mostly by private land owners, who are mostly under the clutch of middlemen and vagaries of weather. The book, based on an empirical study, has indentified the marker variables of farmers in responding to and complying with the unpredictability and freaks of social dynamics.

This book was released on 2011-02-18 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today's business environment involves design decisions with significant uncertainty. To succeed, decision-makers should replace deterministic methods with a risk-based approach that accounts for the decision maker‘s risk tolerance. In many problems, it is impractical to collect data because rare or one-time events are involved. Therefore, we need a

This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 913 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Released every three years since March 2003, the United Nations World Water Development Report (WWDR), a flagship UN-Water report published by UNESCO, has become the voice of the United Nations system in terms of the state, use and management of the world's freshwater resources. The report is primarily targeted at national decision-makers and water resource managers, but is also aimed at educating and informing a broader audience, from governments to the private sector and civil society. It underlines the important roles water plays in all social, economic and environmental decisions, highlighting policy implications across various sectors, from local and municipal to regional and international levels. Similarly to the first two editions, this report includes a comprehensive and up-to-date assessment of several key challenge areas, such as water for food, energy and human health, and governance challenges such as institutional reform, knowledge and capacity-building, and financing, each produced by individual UN agencies.
