Book excerpt: Testing the homogeneity of variances is an important problem in many applications since statistical methods of frequent use, such as ANOVA, assume equal variances for two or more groups of data. However, testing the equality of variances is a difficult problem due to the fact that many of the tests are not robust against non-normality. It is known that the kurtosis of the distribution of the source data can affect the performance of the tests for variance. We review the classical tests and their latest, more robust modifications, some other tests that have recently appeared in the literature, and use bootstrap and permutation techniques to test for equal variances. We compare the performance of these tests under different types of distributions, sample sizes and true ratios of variances of the populations. Monte-Carlo methods are used in this study to calculate empirical powers and type I errors under different settings.

The following are excerpts from reviews. “Inequalities: Theory of Majorization and its Applications” merits strong praise. It is innovative, coherent, well written and, most importantly, a pleasure to read. ... This work is a valuable resource!” (Mathematical Reviews). “The authors ... present an extremely rich collection of inequalities in a remarkably coherent and unified approach. The book is a major work on inequalities, rich in content and original in organization.” (Siam Review). “The appearance of ... Inequalities in 1979 had a great impact on the mathematical sciences. By showing how a single concept unified a staggering amount of material from widely diverse disciplines–probability, geometry, statistics, operations research, etc.–this work was a revelation to those of us who had been trying to make sense of his own corner of this material.” (Linear Algebra and its Applications). This greatly expanded new edition includes recent research on stochastic, multivariate and group majorization, Lorenz order, and applications in physics and chemistry, in economics and political science, in matrix inequalities, and in probability and statistics. The reference list has almost doubled.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bibliography on stochastic orderings. Was there a real need for it? In a time of reference databases as the MathSci or the Science Citation Index or the Social Science Citation Index the answer seems to be negative. The reason we think that this bibliog raphy might be of some use stems from the frustration that we, as workers in the field, have often experienced by finding similar results being discovered and proved over and over in different journals of different disciplines with different levels of mathematical so phistication and accuracy and most of the times without cross references. Of course it would be very unfair to blame an economist, say, for not knowing a result in mathematical physics, or vice versa, especially when the problems and the languages are so far apart that it is often difficult to recognize the analogies even after further scrutiny. We hope that collecting the references on this topic, regardless of the area of application, will be of some help, at least to pinpoint the problem. We use the term stochastic ordering in a broad sense to denote any ordering relation on a space of probability measures. Questions that can be related to the idea of stochastic orderings are as old as probability itself. Think for instance of the problem of comparing two gambles in order to decide which one is more favorable.

Book excerpt: This dissertation considers homogeneity test for comparing multivariate normal populations with generalized order restricted alternative hypothesis. The framework in this dissertation presents a generalized multivariate order for the mean vectors. This order is induced from a closed convex cone in Hilbert space without any speci?cs on particular structures of the cones. Such cones are used to express the generalized order restricted alternative hypothesis. This dissertation derives the restricted maximum likelihood estimators (RMLEs) for the mean vectors under multivariate order restrictions, develops the likelihood ratio tests (LRTs) for the hypotheses about the restricted mean vectors. The statistical procedures are described through the projections onto closed convex cones. These closed convex cones are used to describe both the null and alternative hypotheses. The main result of this work is establishing the unbiasedness of the homogeneity test.

Book excerpt: This paper compares empirical type I error and power of different tests that have been proposed to assess the homogeneity of within-group variances. The main questions answered in the paper are:(1) Which tests are most effective (powerful and robust) when testing the homogeneity of variances in various conditions of heterogeneity, and(2) When these conditions exist, do any of the tests of homogeneity of variance prove more effective in the detection of heterogeneity than others? An introductory simulation study established that Anova is extremely susceptible to heterogeneity of the variances. This occurs both in normally distributed and non-normal datasets. Even small deviances from homogeneity to that of heteroscedasticity results in inflated type I error.A subsequent simulation study was conducted. The purpose of this study was to determine which of the tests of homogeneity of variances preformed best in unfavourable conditions. These conditions included small sample sizes and a number of non-normal distributions. In these conditions, Bartlett's or Box's tests perform well. Conversely, Cochran's test and the Log Anova test exhibited low power with small to moderate sample sizes even with normally distributed datasets. A decision tree has been created for these results that can be used to determine the most effective test strategy.

Book excerpt: This volume of the Biostatistics and Health Sciences Set focuses on statistics applied to clinical research. The use of SAS for data management and statistical modeling is illustrated using various examples. Many aspects of data processing and statistical analysis of cross-sectional and experimental medical data are covered, including regression models commonly found in medical statistics. This practical book is primarily intended for health researchers with a basic knowledge of statistical methodology. Assuming basic concepts, the authors focus on the practice of biostatistical methods essential to clinical research, epidemiology and analysis of biomedical data (including comparison of two groups, analysis of categorical data, ANOVA, linear and logistic regression, and survival analysis). The use of examples from clinical trials and epidemiological studies provide the basis for a series of practical exercises, which provide instruction and familiarize the reader with essential SAS commands. - Presents the use of SAS software in the statistical approach for the management of data modeling - Includes elements of the language and descriptive statistics - Supplies measures of association, comparison of means, and proportions for two or more samples - Explores linear and logistic regression - Provides survival data analysis
