Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is one of the few gendered histories of the Partition experience in Bengal. Tracing the afterlife of the Partition in Bengal through the gendered experience of displacement and resettlement, it analyses the spatial reconfigurations that were brought about. Drawing heavily on police records, private papers, newspapers and memoirs, this work enters the realm of personal time in the lives of the migrant and refugee and follows them to see how the spaces that they inhabited, the city of Calcutta and its suburbs, were transformed to accommodate them and imposed with new meanings and one might say, new borders. It highlights how ‘fear’ came to be the dominant emotion associated with the migrants’ flight, how it was subsequently politicized and how it became the cornerstone of the refugees’ bargaining with the state. Furthermore, it focuses on how the state, in its attempt to become a charitable institution, put in place a gendered structure of relief and later, rehabilitation. This work also shows how camps and colonies became the sites of political contestation, how the refugees found a brand of Leftist politics particularly useful for their purpose and how it became the cornerstone of their newfound identity. A major intervention in Partition studies, the volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of South Asian history, migration and diaspora studies, gender studies and politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Making Home(s) in Displacement critically rethinks the relationship between home and displacement from a spatial, material, and architectural perspective. Recent scholarship in the social sciences has investigated how migrants and refugees create and reproduce home under new conditions, thereby unpacking the seemingly contradictory positions of making a home and overcoming its loss. Yet, making home(s) in displacement is also a spatial practice, one which intrinsically relates to the fabrication of the built environment worldwide. Conceptually the book is divided along four spatial sites, referred to as camp, shelter, city, and house, which are approached with a multitude of perspectives ranging from urban planning and architecture to anthropology, geography, philosophy, gender studies, and urban history, all with a common focus on space and spatiality. By articulating everyday homemaking experiences of migrants and refugees as spatial practices in a variety of geopolitical and historical contexts, this edited volume adds a novel perspective to the existing interdisciplinary scholarship at the intersection of home and displacement. It equally intends to broaden the canon of architectural histories and theories by including migrants' and refugees' spatial agencies and place-making practices to its annals. By highlighting the political in the spatial, and vice versa, this volume sets out to decentralise and decolonise current definitions of home and displacement, striving for a more pluralistic outlook on the idea of home.

Book excerpt: Archaeology and Women draws together from a variety of angles work currently being done within a contemporary framework on women in archaeology. One section of this collection of original articles addresses the historical and contemporary roles of women in the discipline. Another attempts to link contemporary archaeological theory and practice to work on women and gender in other fields. Finally, this volume presents a wide diversity of theoretical approaches and methods of study of women in the ancient world, representing a cross section of work being carried out today under the broad banner of gender archaeology. The geographical and chronological range of the contributions is also wide, from Southeast Asia and South America to Western Asia, Egypt and Europe, from Great Britain to Greece, and from 10,000 years ago to the recent past. An ideal sampler for courses dealing with women and archaeology.

Book excerpt: The making of a string instrument called a Bandura, played a significant role in the documentation of my grandmother's immigration (at the tender age of 14) and her settlement in Canada. From my memories as well as those shared with by my uncle, her son, the story begins, taking you the reader on that same journey across the ocean, weaving through past and present life events of my grandmother and me the writer. Hopefully, after reading this story, you too will be inspired to document your ancestral stories as well, to leave as a legacy for future generations. For, we must always remember the gifts our multicultural ancestor's left us, in their assimilation to the new world. Reviews Book Review Iryna Konstantiuk "Excellent work, an unforgettable story! The story as told, is a refreshing presentation of a pioneer immigrantÕs adaptation and survival in Canada. This historical account of events, reminds one of where we've come from, and what it means to belong to this nation. It is a must read for every Canadian, particularly each successive generation of youth. I would recommend that this book be part of mandatory reading within our Canadian school curriculum!" Book excerpt: This is an overview of the leading prospective studies in developing countries on population and health research. Prospective community studies are concerned with understanding the incidence of birth, disease, and death. Here, the leading practitioners in this field present the methodologies they have developed and summarize the major findings of their efforts. Since many of these methodologies have never been documented and their results are scattered in different publications, this volume collects much valuable data that is otherwise difficult to locate. It will be an indispensable guide to researchers in the field of prospective studies and will also prove useful as an academic or professional resource for demographers, public health researchers, family planners, and survey specialists.
