Book excerpt: La prolifération des équipements numériques et des réseaux d'interconnexion a fait du multimédia une technologie dominante dans divers types d'applications. En même temps, elle a rendu leur environnement d'exécution plus que jamais hétérogène et dynamique. Dans ces conditions, il devient nécessaire de configurer convenablement une application à son contexte d'utilisation et de plus, de lui permettre d'adapter son comportement de façon autonome lors des changements dans ce contexte. L'objectif de cette thèse consiste à faciliter le développement d'applications multimédia configurables et adaptives. Nous proposons PLASMA, un support de composants basé sur le modèle Fractal qui prend en compte la particularité des applications multimédia. D'une part, les composants multimédia sont construits avec une granularité fine et sont assemblés dynamiquement afin de répondre aux besoins d'une application et de son contexte. D'autre part, des politiques d'adaptation arbitrairement complexes peuvent être intégrées dans une application à partir de composants génériques. Un langage de description est fournit par le support PLASMA afin de permettre la manipulation de ces composants avec un haut niveau d'abstraction. L'évaluation de PLASMA a été réalisée dans deux scénarios d'actualité: une application de lecture vidéo configurable dans le contexte de la norme de codage H.264, et un serveur de transcodage vidéo pour terminaux mobiles mettant l'accent sur le besoin de configuration dynamique et d'adaptabilité. Les résultats obtenus démontrent le bien fondé de notre approche ainsi que son apport pour la gestion de la qualité de service des applications multimédia
