Book excerpt: A visually stunning examination of El Greco’s work that considers the artist’s constant reinvention and professional drive Renowned for a singular artistic vision, Domenikos Theotokopoulos, known as El Greco (1541–1614), developed his distinctive painting style as he assiduously pursued professional success. This fresh and engaging survey of El Greco’s work explores varied aspects of the artist’s career—his aesthetic education in Italy, the mixed reception of his mature works in Spain, his uncompromising approach to business, and the baroque logistics of his Toledo workshop—and reveals the depth of El Greco’s astounding ambition. The impressive volume focuses in particular on his 1577–79 altarpiece paintings for the Church of Santo Domingo el Antiguo in Toledo—among them the magnificent Assumption of the Virgin—which heralded the artist’s arrival in Spain after productive periods of formation and re-formation in Crete, Venice, and Rome. Lavishly illustrated and clothbound with gilded edges, this publication features reproductions and scholarly discussions of more than 60 works ranging from large-scale canvases to intimate panels, with essays that elucidate the motives and meanings behind the artist’s constantly changing and inventive approach.
Book Synopsis Juan Sebastian Bach by : Adalberto García De Mendoza
Download or read book Juan Sebastian Bach written by Adalberto García De Mendoza and published by Palibrio. This book was released on 2012-07 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Wild Shore is a tale of outdoor adventure, odd characters, humorous stories, and quiet reflection.
Book Synopsis María Izquierdo and Frida Kahlo by : Nancy Deffebach
Download or read book María Izquierdo and Frida Kahlo written by Nancy Deffebach and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2015-08-15 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: María Izquierdo (1902–1955) and Frida Kahlo (1907–1954) were the first two Mexican women artists to achieve international recognition. During the height of the Mexican muralist movement, they established successful careers as easel painters and created work that has become an integral part of Mexican modernism. Although the iconic Kahlo is now more famous, the two artists had comparable reputations during their lives. Both were regularly included in major exhibitions of Mexican art, and they were invariably the only women chosen for the most important professional activities and honors. In a deeply informed study that prioritizes critical analysis over biographical interpretation, Nancy Deffebach places Kahlo’s and Izquierdo’s oeuvres in their cultural context, examining the ways in which the artists participated in the national and artistic discourses of postrevolutionary Mexico. Through iconographic analysis of paintings and themes within each artist’s oeuvre, Deffebach discusses how the artists engaged intellectually with the issues and ideas of their era, especially Mexican national identity and the role of women in society. In a time when Mexican artistic and national discourses associated the nation with masculinity, Izquierdo and Kahlo created images of women that deconstructed gender roles, critiqued the status quo, and presented more empowering alternatives for women. Deffebach demonstrates that, paradoxically, Kahlo and Izquierdo became the most successful Mexican women artists of the modernist period while most directly challenging the prevailing ideas about gender and what constitutes important art.

Book Synopsis Los ninfoleptos, Bipolaridad: Arte y Locura by : Óscar Benassini Félix
Download or read book Los ninfoleptos, Bipolaridad: Arte y Locura written by Óscar Benassini Félix and published by Editorial Ink. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 163 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
