En effet ce métal est connu pour son excellente biocompatibilité et beaucoup pensent qu'il n'est pas responsable d'un déclenchement de réaction d'hypersensibilité. Le but de ce travail n'est aucunement de remettre en cause les très bonnes caractéristiques de ce matériau, mais de mettre en avant que ce matériau peut être la cause de phénomènes allergiques, notamment dans le domaine implantaire. Pour cela, après une synthèse sur l'immunité et l'allergie, nous verrons les facteurs de risques allergiques. Par la suite nous montrerons de quelles façons l'allergie entre dans le monde de l'odontologie (à l'anamnèse, à la suite d'une réaction) et de quelles façons peut se faire le diagnostic. Pour finir nous étudierons les propriétés physiques, chimiques et biologiques du titane et de ses alliages qui permettront de comprendre les raisons pour lesquelles ce matériau est un matériau de choix dans l'arsenal du chirurgien dentiste, ainsi que les études et les preuves scientifiques démontrant l'existence de l'allergie au titane.

Book excerpt: The book intends to give a state-of-the-art overview of flexoelectricity, a linear physical coupling between mechanical (orientational) deformations and electric polarization, which is specific to systems with orientational order, such as liquid crystals. Chapters written by experts in the field shed light on theoretical as well as experimental aspects of research carried out since the discovery of flexoelectricity. Besides a common macroscopic (continuum) description the microscopic theory of flexoelectricity is also addressed. Electro-optic effects due to or modified by flexoelectricity as well as various (direct and indirect) measurement methods are discussed. Special emphasis is given to the role of flexoelectricity in pattern-forming instabilities. While the main focus of the book lies in flexoelectricity in nematic liquid crystals, peculiarities of other mesophases (bent-core systems, cholesterics, and smectics) are also reviewed. Flexoelectricity has relevance to biological (living) systems and can also offer possibilities for technical applications. The basics of these two interdisciplinary fields are also summarized.

In addition to being produced through environmentally friendly biological means, its conversion to energy yields only pure water, which is an ideal energy carrier in reducing greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel combustion. Unlike other well-developed biofuels such as bioethanol and biodiesel, biohydrogen production is still in the early stage of development. A variety of technologies are being developed for biohydrogen production. This chapter presents a review of the state-of-the-art and perspectives of bioprocess design for biohydrogen production research in the context of pathways, microorganisms, metabolic flux analysis, process design, and reactor system. Challenges and prospects of biohydrogen production are also outlined.
