Book excerpt: In our times hope is called into question. The disintegration of economic systems, of states and societies, families, friendships, distrust in political structures, forces us to ask if hope has disappeared from the experience of today's men and women. In August 2019, up to 240 participants met at the international theological congress in Bratislava, Slovakia. The main lectures, congress sections and workshops aimed to provide a space for thinking about the central theme of hope in relation to philosophy, politics, pedagogy, social work, charity, interreligious dialogue and ecumenism.

Book excerpt: Among the most acclaimed and accomplished theologians of the last 100 years, Jurgen Moltmann is also one of the most popular. This autobiography will certainly be widely read in the churches and the academy and will shed light on the intellectual development of this enormously influential theologian. He has marked the history of theology after the Second World War in Europe and North America like no other. He is the most widely read, quoted, and translated theologian of our time. Now, after Jurgen Moltmann has celebrated his eightieth birthday, he looks back on a life engaged in and forging a Christian response to the tumult and opportunities of our time. In his autobiography Jurgen Moltmann tells his life story, from the Hamburg youth in the "alternative" parental home up to the present moment, and he reflects on the journey of his own theological development and creativity. A wide-ranging document alert to the deeper currents of his time and ours, A Broad Place is an entertaining reconsideration of a life full of intense experience and new beginnings.

Book excerpt: The fact cannot be overlooked that we are in the midst of a sociological crisis of orientation on the grand scale. New problems and needs have become insistent, new fears and longings have come to light. Many are looking for a new foothold, a fundamental certainty, a compass for their life and the life of other human beings. The inconsistencies and ambivalence of the phenomena cannot conceal the fact that religion is attracting greater attention: the old religion and many new ones, the Christian religion as well as the Islamic, Hindu, and Buddhist religions. In East and West anyway the God Progress seems to have lost rapidly something of its credibility; belief in a continually better life with the aid of science and technology and also through revolution and socialism has been shaken by serious doubts. And, while the elderly have not been able - with all the aids of psychology - to come to terms with the meaning of death, younger people - supposedly a Òno futureÓ generation, apathetic, noncommittal, nervous, and self-destructive - are asking afresh about the missing sense of life. Meanwhile, though science did the most in the last century to destroy belief in immortality and made stupendous efforts to prolong life, it is medicine today that has broken through the taboos in regard to death and with its research into dying has given new life to the question of death and survival. But has medicine - or perhaps parapsychology - proved that there is life after death?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing focus on the Christian confession of God's completed kingdom, the new heaven and the new earth. This theme has time and again seduced people into elaborate fantasies that stimulated the senses. How can we talk about it meaningfully? Raymond R. Hausoul relates systematic theology to biblical theology by comparing three theologians: the Catholic theologian Karl Rahner, the Protestant Jurgen Moltmann, and the Reformed Gregory Beale. This leads to reflections on differences between matter, space, and time of the new heaven and new earth and those of our present reality. The hope for renewal and resurrection is thus linked to the prophecies of the new Jerusalem, the tree of life, and the resurrection body.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As theologians across confessional divides try to say something significant about human dignity in our contemporary society, there is fresh interest in the ancient Christian doctrine that the human being is created in the 'imago Dei'. Theology is grounding responsibility for others and for the world around us in this common vision that the human being's infinite horizon lies in a divine calling and destiny. Robinson examines the 'imago Dei' debate through three giants of twentieth century theology - Karl Barth, Hans Urs von Balthasar, and Jürgen Moltmann. This is placed against a survey of the principle developments and distinctions relating to the doctrine in the history of Christian thought, which in itself will be valuable for all students of Theology. A fresh analysis of ecumenical contributions places the development of the doctrine in the context of the ongoing process of ecumenical dialogue on the dignity of the human person, with special reference to this theme in the first encyclical of Pope Benedict XVI, Deus Caritas Est. Whilst 'imago Dei' is the focus of this book, Robinson invites the reader to see its relevance to theology as a whole on a specifically ecumenical canvas, and relates directly to more general areas of theological anthropology, grace, salvation, and the relationship between God and the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For both Maximus the Confessor (c. 580-662) and Jurgen Moltmann (b. 1926), understanding what it means to be human springs from a contemplative vision of God. This comparative study explores surprising parallels between the theological anthropology of the seventh-century Byzantine monk and the contemporary German Protestant. Bingaman argues that Maximus and Moltmann root their understanding of the human calling in their Trinitarian and christological reflection, in contrast to many modern theologies that tend to devise an account of human being first, and then try to find ways in which Christ and the Trinity are somehow relevant to this human being. In this constructive work, Bingaman demonstrates the intrinsic connection between Maximus' and Moltmann's views of human being, Christ and the Trinity, the church, and the human calling in creation. Illustrating the richness of these ancient and postmodern theologies in conversation, All Things New lays out future trajectories in theological anthropology, patristic ressourcement, ecologically attuned theology and spirituality, and Orthodox-Protestant dialogue.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hope is the leitmotiv of Jurgen Moltmann's theology. Not merely one aspect of his project, hope is the whole of it, the supreme doctrine interpenetrating all others. Indeed, hope is his method. The present study is both historical and developmental while also being analytical and interrogative. This chronological exploration seeks to show the nature, composition, and development of Moltmann's doctrine of hope, as the distinctive doctrine of his theology, implicating all others. Part I establishes Moltmann's doctrine of hope as grounded in God's faithfulness in the cross and resurrection. Part II investigates major doctrines in his project in light of this ground. This design seeks to take advantage of the chronological approach while also integrating the best elements of a topical approach.

Book excerpt: A fresh, highly evocative, and stimulating interpretation of the historic Christian faith as reflected in the Apostles’ and Nicene Creeds. Gustaf Wingren believes that contemporary Christianity suffers from a neglect of the First Article—the doctrine of creation. In this book, he shows the importance of using the First Article (God as Creator) as the starting point for understanding the Christian faith and for living the Christian life. All other teachings find their proper meaning in relationship to this primary doctrine of faith. The Second Article, on redemption by Jesus Christ, is interpreted by Wingren as a continuation of God’s creative activity and as the fulfillment of God’s original intention for his people. In his discussion of the Third Article, Wingren points out that the Spirit of God is at work in every activity that promotes concern for others and that serves the well-being of people. A skilled interpreter of the Bible, Wingren also draws on the insights of Luther and the Reformers as well as contemporary theologians as he underscores the perennial importance of the creeds of everyday Christian living.

Book excerpt: From its English publication in 1973, Jrgen Moltmanns The Crucified God garnered much attention, and it has become one of the seminal texts of twentieth-century theology. Following up on his groundbreaking Theology of Hope, The Crucified God established the cross as the foundation for Christian hope. Moltmanns dramatic innovation was to see the cross not as a problem of theodicy but instead as an act of ultimate solidarity between God and humanity. In this, he drew on liberation theology, and he was among the first to bring third-world theologies into a first-world context. Moltmann proposes that suffering is not a problem to be solved but instead that suffering is an aspect of Gods very being: God is love, and love invariably involves suffering. In this view, the crucifixion of Jesus is an event that affects the entirety of the Trinity, showing that The Crucified God is more than an arresting titleit is a theological breakthrough.

Book excerpt: For Jurgen Moltmann, theological anthropology must be liberating. It should take a stand against dehumanizing images and concepts of human life and point out ways to "true humanity." In his view, a theologian can develop such a liberating anthropology only if he speaks explicitly from the perspective of God's kingdom as conceived in the Bible and the Christian tradition and if he speaks to and in his context, as one who experiences contemporary sufferings and hopes. But how? This book analyzes the development of Moltmann's theology in the light of this quest for a liberating view on human life. It examines the anthropological concerns in the different stages of his theological enterprise: his post-war Trummertheologie, the "loose theological threads" of the 1950s, his theology of hope and promise in the 1960s, his theology of the cross, human rights and play in the 1970s and his ecological and "charismatic" theology of the 1980s and 1990s. Moltmann's theological thinking has taken place consciously at the intersection of personal experiences, historical challenges, biblical testimony and the fundamentals of the Christian tradition. Analyzing his quest for a liberating anthropology in a chronological way, this study therefore gives an impression of the frictions and fault lines of Christian anthropology in the context of the societal changes during the second half of the twentieth century. A concluding chapter discusses some of the problems accentuated in the course of this analysis and evaluates some valuable leads for a Christian anthropology today. TON VAN PROOIJEN submitted this study as his doctoral dissertation at the Free University of Amsterdam. His current research interests include anthropology and politics, particularly the concept of humankind in Christian Democratic political thought.

Book excerpt: "With this Festschrift we bring to this teacher and friend a richly multicolored bouquet of theological contributions, all of which convey an echo of Lochman's theological message. Frank Macchia and Paul Chung, who were among Lochman's leading students at Basel, have collected the essays of this volume. These essays reveal the ecumenical interests of inter-confessional ecumenical dialogue, the social interest of a vigorous Christian ethic, and the human interest in a humane culture, interests affirmed in various ways in Lochman's theology. They bring to expression our gratitude for his theological presence over so many years and in so many continents." Jurgen Moltmann, from the foreword Contributors Include: Prof. Dr. Charles C. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What Gutierrez has done for overall theological understanding, what Segundo has done for theological method, and what Miranda has done for biblical studies, Jon Sobrino has now done for Christology; He has provided a substantial and enduring theological contribution from a Third World perspective. This book will have long life, since it not only argues for the necessity of a Christology 'from the underside of history, ' but offers an extensive example of how such a Christology should be constructed, showing the basic connection between the radical historicity of Jesus and the suffering and pain of oppressed people. The thoroughness of the author's survey of other positions, the fullness of his documentation, and the pervasive power of his own affirmations make clear that 'Christology at the Crossroads' will not leave us stranded at the crossroads but will start us down exciting and demanding new paths. Robert McAfee Brown Professor of Ecumenics and World Christianity, Union Theological Seminary The publication of 'Christology at the Crossroads' in English is most opportune. It is not only the Christology presented in this book, but the Christology of the church at large (indeed of the churches) that stands at the crossroads at present. Those of us who have been working in this field know that in order to break through some deadlocked situations we need a Christology more soberly rooted in soteriology, more honestly founded upon the historical Jesus, and more realistically turned towards a future yet to be realized. Yet in the affluent and basically contented northern nations of the western world, this kind of Christology has not so far been written. To find it one must turn to the Third World theologians for the present, and among these Jon Sobrino's book is a landmark. Monika K. Hellwig Associate Professor of Theology, Georgetown Universit
