Book Synopsis Aging and Social Policy by : Harald Conrad
Download or read book Aging and Social Policy written by Harald Conrad and published by IUDICIUM Verlag. This book was released on 2002 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, Japan and Germany have been facing very similar challenges: aging populations, changing employment structures, long-lasting economic stagnation, and globalization, all of which threaten existing social security arrangements. Both countries are in a number of respects more socially and politically regulated, and in this sense less liberal, than the Anglo-American economies. Nonetheless, during the last couple of years several important social policy reforms have been implemented. A comparison of these reforms may provide valuable insights into the changing character of "conservative" welfare states. This volume concentrates on two fields of social policy: long-term care insurance and public pensions. These social insurances are at the center of current public debate in both countries because population aging translates immediately into a higher demand for care for the elderly and old age security. The contributions range from demographic and policy implications of aging through detailed analyses on the different reform measures to specific aspects such as bioethical or regional policy considerations. The volume is intended not only for experts specializing in social policy research but also for policy makers as well as the general reader interested in the current debates centering on the "restructuring of the welfare state".

Book Synopsis Delaying Retirement by : Dirk Hofäcker
Download or read book Delaying Retirement written by Dirk Hofäcker and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-14 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To a backdrop of ageing societies, pension crises and labour market reforms, this book investigates how the policy shift from early retirement to active ageing has affected individual retirement behaviour. Focusing on eleven European countries, the United States and Japan, it brings together leading international experts to analyze recent changes in pension systems. Their findings demonstrate that there has been a fundamental transition in pension policies and a steep increase in older workers’ retirement ages and employment rates. Yet changes in retirement behavior are not evenly distributed across all societal strata. This raises the serious concern that an overall rise in the retirement age will be accompanied by the re-emergence of social inequality in the transition from work to retirement. This innovative edited collection will appeal to students and scholars of sociology, economics, political science, human resources management, gerontology and social policy, and also to policy-makers and professionals dealing with older workers.

Book Synopsis Aging Societies by : Barry P. Bosworth
Download or read book Aging Societies written by Barry P. Bosworth and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 1998-05-01 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By 2030, when most American baby boomers will have retired, all the large industrial economies will see a massive increase in the old age population. This book examines population aging and its implications for public retirement programs in the five largest industrial economies--Britain, France, Germany, Japan, and the United States. The authors report on national demographic trends, examine the current living conditions of the aged population, explain the structure of the retirement system, and offer estimates of future budgetary costs of the public programs. They also discuss national debates over the potential reform of public retirement systems. While all five countries share the prospect of an older population, variations in the size and timing of demographic change, as well as important differences in the structure of public programs for the elderly, suggest that population aging will have widely different implications in each country. In Germany and Japan, for example, the population will not only grow older but may actually decline because of low birth rates. The United States will experience less aging, but its debate over reform treats seriously the possibility of privatizing public retirement commitments.
Book Synopsis Education and Work in Great Britain, Germany and Italy by : Annette Jobert
Download or read book Education and Work in Great Britain, Germany and Italy written by Annette Jobert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines the multiple connections between education, broadly defined, and work, through an analysis of the literature on the transition from school to work, on vocational training and on the labour market. It shows that concepts such as skill, unemployment rates, young people and the transition from school to work are socially constructed and are thought about in ways which are nationally specific. This book is essential reading for students of European training systems and for those conducting comparative European research.
Book Synopsis Age and Ageing Policy in Germany by : Thomas Scharf
Download or read book Age and Ageing Policy in Germany written by Thomas Scharf and published by . This book was released on 1998-09 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like all other advanced Western societies, Germany is coming to terms with the phenomenon of an ageing population. The demographic challenge posed by population ageing is generally seen in terms of potential crisis in the funding of health and social programmes. Some social scientists have even suggested that the early decades of the next century will be marked by conflict between the generations, with young and old competing for increasingly scarce resources. This is the first book written in English to address comprehensively ageing policies in Germany and the contribution of older people to German society. The book examines the development of social policies affecting older people since the origins of the German welfare state under Bismarck and looks at how policy makers have sought to cope with the growing numbers of elderly people over the years. The social, economic and political role of older people in contemporary Germany and their contribution to society are also explored, from their development into a more politically active sector of society to their changing relationship with the labour market and their social integration in terms of their relationships with families, neighbourhoods and local communities.
