War Toleranz - laut Duden Duldung, besonders in Glaubensfragen und in der Politik - damals noch ein hauptsächlich von Intellektuellen diskutiertes und kaum in die Praxis umgesetztes Konzept, so ist sie heute in aller Munde und fest in Staat und Gesellschaft verankert. Dass ein jeder nach seiner Facon glücklich werden darf, ist heute selbstverständlich, und Religions- und Meinungsfreiheit sind als Grundrechte in unserer Verfassung fest verankert. Und doch wird das Thema Toleranz auch heute noch unter Umständen heiß diskutiert. "Null Toleranz" ist ein heftig umstrittenes Schlagwort der Innenpolitik, das Gesetz zur "Homo-Ehe" hat hohe Wogen geschlagen und lebhafte Diskussionen angeregt, wie weit die staatliche Toleranz zu reichen hat. Spätestens seit den Anschlägen auf das World Trade Center in New York am 11. September 2001, hat die Diskussion erheblich an Brisanz gewonnen. Der "internationale Kampf gegen den Terrorismus", diverse Sicherheits- und Anti-Terror-Gesetze in verschiedenen Ländern und das Vorgehen gegen vermeintliche und tatsächliche Islamisten im In- und Ausland haben wieder neu die Frage aufgeworfen, ob und wie der Staat sich gegen Bedrohungen durch anders Denkende wehren darf, wie er mit religiösen Minderheiten umgehen soll und wo die Grenzen der Toleranz und der Meinungs- und Religionsfreiheit liegen.
