Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ulysses S. Grant Amid the multitude of biographies of General Grant, written in the main by those who knew him with some degree of intimacy, the appearance of another may seem to demand explanation, and even apology. I cannot lay claim either to participation in the stirring history of his times, or to personal acquaintance with my subject; but each generation requires the service of its own historians and biographers, in order to bring the message of the past to bear on the present; and this book is the result of an honest attempt to record a life that is full of significance for our own era. The time has now come when the great struggle for national existence, known as the American Civil War, can be studied without passion or prejudice. Within the last few years, many volumes of personal reminiscences and letters have appeared, and the correspondence of the leaders on both sides has been made available. The primary sources of information, therefore, are approaching completion. Even with this wealth of material, it has not always been easy to determine the exact truth with reference to some of the facts of Grant's life. The subject, however, had for long years commanded his deep interest and much investigation. His admiration of the character and his study of the career of Ulysses Grant equalled probably those of his eminent biog raphers, and finally, in the belief that there were virtues in the true Grant to which full prominence had not been given, possibly because Grant himself would have regarded them as matters of course, there came the desire to write of our great commander as he seemed to one of the least of these his subaltems, and from the fulness of a store of information garnered through reading and hearing for half a century this memoir practically wrote itself. The real work came when it had to be planed and pruned to the prescribed limits. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Grant, General United States Army Grant but his father: the son never consents to indulge in reminiscence respecting his early years, and uniformly refers biographers to the record 'for his career during man hood. In regard to the Mexican War, I have been favored with some material by Hon. Mr. Washburne who has also furnished me with data respecting Grants life on the frontiers. In the campaigns from Belmont to Chattanooga, I have followed, upon all 'disputable points, the authority of Gen. Adam Badeau, in his Military History of Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. I have frequently in the text expressed my obligations to the careful researches of this gentleman and I repeat my acknowledgments in this introduction. Grant Nations grow great by their conflicts. Trials arc necessary to their success, movement to their growth, and the opposition of forces to direct them into those regular and harmonious orbits by which they are henceforth to move grandly on in their predestined course. The American nation is no exception to this law. We have just finished the third grand conflict of our nation. The first was the War of Independence, in which a few small colonies struggled for a separate existence, and won it by blood and suffering. The next was the Second War of Independence - the War of 1812-15 - for such it was. Not till the Peace of 1815 was our flag respected, our commerce safe upon the ocean, and our frontier protected from the Indians. The third was the War for Unity. We call it the War of the Rebellion; but the one prominent idea on every flag and in every heart was the American Union. Let others better versed in military lore discuss details of strategy for which Grant had himself but little use. War as a game had no attractions for him. His meagre library had no military books. He studied tactics only for the task in hand. I never maneuver, he once said to Meade; and, to another officer, The art of war is simple enough. Find out where your enemy is! Get at him as soon as you can Strike at him as hard as you can, and keep moving on! Grant never was concerned about the opposition, considered only what he had to do himself, assumed the forces of the enemy would be as frightened as his own. I am a smarter man than Grant, said Sherman. I know a great deal more about war and abouteverything else than he does but I'll tell you where he beats me and where he beats the world. I am always worrying about what the enemy is going to do. Grant never gives a damn! Of all Grant's battles Shiloh is the one in most dispute. But this is undisputed - that, however badly it was planned and though the loss in men was great, it marked a striking Federal advance and swept the armies of the Southwest back toward their last stand at Vicksburg. S Grant The history of the United States, or of the world at large, does not record a more honorable, chivalrous, and courageous soldier, statesman, and gentleman than U. S. Grant. If the following story of his life serves to inspire in its young readers something of General Grant's high sense of honor, truthfulness, modesty, his thoughtfulness for others, his dislike of all that was coarse, his respect for older people - and not only as a boy, but as General of all the armies of the United States, and during two terms as President - the writer will have achieved the inspiration that came from his own study of the life of this splendid American. Indebtedness is acknowledged to the excellent and interesting works on various phases of General Grant's life by the following biographers: Adam Badeau, Henry Copppie, James T. Headley, Rev. P. C. Headley, Albert Deane Richardson, Dana and Wilson, Colonel Nicholas Smith, George W. Childs, W. H. Van Orden, F. A. Burr, W. O. Stoddard, Captain Charles Eaton, Ringwalt, Swift, Hamlin Garland, Owen Wister, John Russell Young, and General Grant's own "Memoirs." Grant and the Period of National Preservation and Reconstruction During four years of civil strife, from 1861 to 1865, more than three millions of Americans - North and South - wore the uniform of the soldier, and in over twenty-two hundred and fifty recorded battles and skirmishes nearly half a million suffered wounds or death. Theories of peace, founded upon a government by the people, have not saved us from contributing our full share to the battle roll of the century. For this loss we find compensation in the fact that these years of conflict, of suffering, and of death, formed an heroic period in American history. Individual selfishness was largely absorbed in the larger self-interest of State and Country. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Grant, for Young Readers Jesse Root Grant was a young tanner who lived in Clermont County, Ohio. It is said that his ancestors belonged to a Scottish clan whose motto was: "Stand fast, stand firm, stand sure." His great-grandfather, "honest Matthew" Grant, landed on Nantasket Beach, in Massachusetts, in 1630, just ten years after the Pilgrims landed on Plymouth Rock. His grandfather was a soldier in the French and Indian war, and his father was a lieutenant in the Revolution. Jesse Grant was proud of his ancestors. He tried to honor their memory by his own upright life and often said that "Stand fast, stand firm, stand sure " was just as good a motto for an American as for a Scotchman. He was so honest and industrious that he was respected by all who knew him. After he had saved enough money to build a house he married pretty Hannah Simpson. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General Ulysses S. Grant is best remembered today as a war-winning general, and he certainly deserves credit for his efforts on behalf of the Union. But has he received too much credit at the expense of other men? Have others who fought the war with him suffered unfairly at his hands? General Grant and the Verdict of History: Memoir, Memory, and the Civil War explores these issues. Professor Frank P. Varney examines Grant’s relationship with three noted Civil War generals: the brash and uncompromising “Fighting Joe” Hooker; George H. Thomas, the stellar commander who earned the sobriquet “Rock of Chickamauga”; and Gouverneur Kemble Warren, who served honorably and well in every major action of the Army of the Potomac before being relieved less than two weeks before Appomattox, and only after he had played a prominent part in the major Union victory at Five Forks. In his earlier book General Grant and the Rewriting of History, Dr. Varney studied the tempestuous relationship between Grant and Union General William S. Rosecrans. During the war, Rosecrans was considered by many of his contemporaries to be on par with Grant himself; today, he is largely forgotten. Rosecrans’s star dimmed, argues Varney, because Grant orchestrated the effort. Unbeknownst to most students of the war, Grant used his official reports, interviews with the press, and his memoirs to influence how future generations would remember the war and his part in it. Aided greatly by his two terms as president, by the clarity and eloquence of his memoirs, and in particular by the dramatic backdrop against which those memoirs were written, our historical memory has been influenced to a degree greater than many realize. It is beyond time to return to the original sources—the letters, journals, reports, and memoirs of other witnesses and the transcripts of courts-martial— to examine Grant’s story from a fresh perspective. The results are enlightening and more than a little disturbing.
