Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of polymers by electron microscopy (EM) needs special techniques, precautions and preparation methods, including ultramicrotomy. General characteristics of the different techniques of EM, including scanning force microscopy, are given in this hands-on book. The application of these techniques to the study of morphology and properties, particularly micromechanical properties, is described in detail. Examples from all classes of polymers are presented.

Book excerpt: The atomic force microscope (AFM) has become one of the leading nanoscale measurement techniques for materials science since its creation in the 1980's, but has been gaining popularity in a seemingly unrelated field of science: biology. The AFM naturally lends itself to investigating the topological surfaces of biological objects, from whole cells to protein particulates, and can also be used to determine physical properties such as Young's modulus, stiffness, molecular bond strength, surface friction, and many more. One of the most important reasons for the rise of biological AFM is that you can measure materials within a physiologically relevant environment (i.e. liquids). This book is a collection of works beginning with an introduction to the AFM along with techniques and methods of sample preparation. Then the book displays current research covering subjects ranging from nano-particulates, proteins, DNA, viruses, cellular structures, and the characterization of living cells.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) is a very powerful tool used to study sample structures with high resolutions. TEM allows energized electrons to penetrate a thin specimen so that information about imaging, diffraction, and chemical compositions from the specimen can be obtained. Due to the short wavelength of the high-energy electrons, Its resolution typically reaches several angstroms for a conventional TEM. Because of this high resolution, TEM has been widely applied in diverse areas in the materials and biological sciences, playing a key role in research or development in relation to the sample design, synthesis, processing or performance. This book provides a concise practical guide to beginners, including upper-division undergraduates, graduates, researchers and engineers. It is written primarily for materials science and engineering or related disciplines, while applications in biological sciences are also included. It concisely covers nearly the entire area of TEM, including the instrumentation, sample preparation, diffraction, imaging, chemical analysis, and some newly developed techniques.

Book excerpt: Sediment samples were taken from Gulf of Mexico cores. From these samples smaller ones were cut, freeze-dried and impregnated with Maraglas, an epoxy resin. Ultrathin sections of the impregnated samples were cut, and viewed in an electron microscope. Micrographs of the ultrathin sections revealed that the microstructures of most of the samples had a loose, open, random arrangement of particles. Differences in appearance of some of the microstructures are attributed to grain size variation, desiccation, remolding, and shearing of the sediment. Associated with this last factor is the formation of oriented domain structures. Variations among the samples in depth of burial, rate of deposition, and, particularly, clay mineralogy were generally small and resulted in no obvious differences in their microstructures. Cohesion, water content, and consolidation characteristics of samples were found to be generally indicative of the type of microstructure observed. Laboratory consolidation and desiccation of samples caused a 'collapse' of the microstructure and preferred, as well as non-preferred, orientation among the particles. Remolding of a sediment resulted in clumping of the particles, parallelism among the particles, and large voids. No evidence was observed in the micrographs which would substantiate the existence of a precipitated chemical cement. (Author).

Book excerpt: This book explains concepts of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and x-ray diffractometry (XRD) that are important for the characterization of materials. The fourth edition adds important new techniques of TEM such as electron tomography, nanobeam diffraction, and geometric phase analysis. A new chapter on neutron scattering completes the trio of x-ray, electron and neutron diffraction. All chapters were updated and revised for clarity. The book explains the fundamentals of how waves and wavefunctions interact with atoms in solids, and the similarities and differences of using x-rays, electrons, or neutrons for diffraction measurements. Diffraction effects of crystalline order, defects, and disorder in materials are explained in detail. Both practical and theoretical issues are covered. The book can be used in an introductory-level or advanced-level course, since sections are identified by difficulty. Each chapter includes a set of problems to illustrate principles, and the extensive Appendix includes laboratory exercises.

This book was released on 1963 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In continuing the investigation of iron whiskers by electron microscopy, additional evidence was obtained concerning the mechanism of filamentary growth as it is reflected in surface structure. During the past year whisker specimens were produced under new types of growth conditions with ultra-pure ferrous chloride containing small amounts of cobaltous chloride at 700 C. Although individual whiskers within each specimen boat may vary somewhat, their surface topography appears to follow definite patterns. In most specimens, regardless of growth conditions, these typical patterns show variation in surface structure from the base to the tip areas. Detail in surface contours appears to be more uniform in whiskers which develop well-formed tips. When whiskers grown with the addition of cobaltous chloride could be broken, their fractured crosssection surfaces exhibited a shell and core structure similar to that found in whiskers which were previously studied in this program.
