Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Years of the Eastern Question, Vol. 2 of 2 The days lengthened out and time hung heavily on our hands: Lent was over; the almond-trees were in blossom, and With the storks and the swallows, those weather-wise birds of passage the tourists had begun their migrations from the genial East and South to their own chill North-west; boatfuls of them from Bombay or Cairo took Constantinople on their way to Brindisi or Marseilles, and they walked about our streets and lounged in our shops With eager wistful countenances, the briskness of their movements, the interest they took in all they saw. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Years of the Eastern Question, Vol. 1 of 2 I was in the East the best part of the period elapsing between the outbreak of the Herzegovinian insurrection and the declaration of the Russian War I watched events under the impression that the office of their recorder was not that of an advocate, but that of a judge or juryman, and that however difficult it might be for mere man to place himself beyond the bias of sympathies and antipathies, his duty would be fulfilled so long as his sentence or verdict left him at peace with his conscience. The highest compliment ever paid to a writer was from a lady, who, having read an essay upon some subject in which sectarian controversy was inevitable, declared she was "puzzled to make out whether the author was Catholic or Protestant." Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eastern Question, Vol. 2 of 2: From the Treaty of Paris 1836 to the Treaty of Berlin 1878, and to the Second Afghan War Negotiations Subsequent To The Declaration Of War, Down To The Memoranda Which Passed Between The Emperor Of Russia And The British Government, In July And August, 1877. It is necessary to follow in some detail the feeble attempts which were made even after the Russian declaration of war to shield Turkey from the consequences of her own conduct. In these attempts the English Cabinet as usual took a helpless part, useless for any purpose except that of showing that the Queen's Government stood alone in its estimate of the course which was consistent with the dignity of Europe, and with the absolute necessity of reform in Turkey. It is needless to say that the English reply to Russia was received with gratitude by the Turks. On the 12th of May the Turkish Chamber of Deputies voted an address of thanks to her Majesty's Government and to the English people. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Private Letters on the Eastern Question: Written at the Dates Thereon, First Published for Private Circulation The French and English Governments have been engaged to mediate, because they were bound, by treaty, to preserve the integrity of the Ottoman territory, - to which treaty the Russians were a party. The Russians violated that treaty by the occupation of the Ottoman territory, in order to force the Sultan to con cede certain things demanded by the Russians. The French and English Governments made propositions for the establishment of peace, which were rejected by Russia in one in stance, by Turkey in the Other, and by Russia at a subsequent period. The Mediators did not pretend to have a right to enforce upon the Russians or upon the Turks the acceptance of such an arrangement. As may suit the Mediatorsf That would be, in the first place, an arbitrary despotic act of power, and a prin ciple, if admitted, which would justify the coercion that a strong State might think fit to employ against a weaker. It would, in the next place, be an act of extreme partiality to the Russians and of Oppression exercised asto the Turks. The latter have been assailed with a military force by the Russians, without even a pretext that has borne a colour of right they have been forced to defend themselves, and war has ensued. Every writer upon International Law de clares, that a war puts an end to treaties between the belligerents the treaties by which Russia has from time to time emascu lated Turkey. Will the Mediators force the Sultan to reanimate those destructive Treaties wrested formerly from the weakness of the Turks, and made for the purpose Of ensuring the continuation Of that weakness, so as to enable Russia to repeat her aggressions? Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual Summaries, Vol. 2: Reprinted From the Times; 1876-1892 The year which will close to-morrow has, with one great excep tion, been comparatively uneventful, and the absorbing interest of the Eastern Question has thrown still further into the shade transactions which in ordinary times would have attracted attention. Perhaps few politicians can remember without an effort that one obstinate civil war has finally been terminated Within the current year. By a curious series of contingencies decisive changes in Spanish affairs have for some time past annually occurred in the course of the winter. At the beginning of 1875, Martinez Campos, by a military demonstration, restored the monarchy under the youthful son of Isabella II. The whole nation acquiesced in the accession of King Alfonso, and his Government wisely devoted its principal care to preparations for the suppression of the Carlist revoAbout the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the Eastern Crisis of 1839-41, closely examining the first instance of coordinated Western intervention in the Middle East during the modern era. Readers can explore topics such as how culture, domestic politics, and ideology shaped diplomacy in this landmark crisis, and the importance role played by religion - including, alongside mainstream Christianity, the Protestant Zionist movement. Highly informative and fully researched, this book suggests that the Eastern Crisis - and its associated diplomatic and military efforts - marked the first of many modern-era attempts to “improve” the region by moulding it in a Western image, providing scholars with a new perspective on this period of history.
