Book excerpt: Following an epic American League Championship Series win over the California Angels and just one out from winning their first World Series in sixty-eight years, the 1986 Boston Red Sox lost Game Six to the New York Mets in unforgettable and devastating fashion. Then they lost Game Seven and the Series itself. Two Sides of Glory portrays the losing side of the story about one of baseball's most riveting World Series match-ups. With the benefit of years of reflection from the men who made up the '86 Sox, this will be the definitive book on this iconic yet most Shakespearian of Boston teams for years to come. After telling the Mets' side of the story, Erik Sherman turns here to the Red Sox's version, with recollections from players that are both insightful and surprisingly emotional. Bill Buckner, whose name became synonymous with a muffed grounder, speaks openly about the cruel aftermath. Pitcher Bruce Hurst broke down three times while being interviewed. Dwight Evans confesses in his interview that he had never before talked at length about the '86 team. And Roger Clemens talks candidly not only about the '86 squad but also accusations of alleged steroid abuse later in his career and the toll it has taken on his family. In each player's retelling, there is the excitement of history never told and old mysteries answered. The story of the '86 Red Sox is well known, but now, after thirty years, the players have opened up to Sherman like never before. It's an in-depth, first-person account with the intriguing key players who made up this once-in-a-generation Boston team, and also a look at how the extremes of tantalizing victory and heart-wrenching failure shaped and influenced their lives--both on the field and off.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perspective is how we see a situation based on an emotional response during a moment. As we grow and learn, we gain new perspectives on old circumstances and even handle ourselves differently in new settings. We all experience struggles and challenges in life. We adapt to the environment we are placed in and make choices based on those circumstances. Some of us cope better than others and can illuminate logic where others can’t see. However, learning to look through the lens of another is the ability to embrace judgment and learn compassion. Embracing life’s journey with the guidance of Jesus isn’t always easy, and the verses we read or hear that resonate with us most are the verses we can relate to at that moment in time. We can read the same verse at various stages in our lives and see it differently at every phase. The dilemma is not knowing the version before the life experience in order to make better choices. Submissiveness to God’s plans is where trusting him begins. Only trusting God’s plan for our lives seems to be more difficult than it should be. The logical question is why?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1995, the first edition of Managing Your Mind established a unique place in the self-help book market. A blend of tried-and-true psychological counseling and no-nonsense management advice grounded in the principles of CBTand other psychological treatments, the book straddled two types of self-help literature, arguing that in one's personal and professional life, the way to success is the same. By adopting the practical strategies that mental health experts Butler and Hope have developed over years of clinical research and practice, one can develop the "mental fitness" necessary to resolve one's personal and interpersonal challenges at home and work and to live a productive, satisfying life. The first edition addressed how to develop key skills to mental fitness (e.g., managing one's time better, facing and solving problems better, keeping things in perspective, learning to relax, etc.), how to improve one's relationships, how to beat anxiety and depression, and how to establish a good mind-body balance. For this new edition, Butler and Hope have updated all preexisting material and have added five new chapters-on sexuality and intimate relationships; anger in relationships; recent traumatic events and their aftermath; loss and bereavement; and dealing with the past.

Book excerpt: In many countries, the development of railway science is of great significance to both the economy and society, and transdisciplinary studies involving railways and other fields has also become more important in recent years. This book presents the proceedings of the 7th International Symposium on Innovation & Sustainability of Modern Railway (ISMR 2020), held in Nanchang, China from 23 - 25 October 2020. The symposium has been held biennially since 2008 and is principally aimed at expanding the scientific partnership between Russian and Chinese transport universities in the field of railway transportation. It is organized in a collaboration between the Federal Railway Transport Agency, Irkutsk State Transport University (IrGUPS) and East China Jiaotong University, and enables scientists from Russia, China and Mongolia to come together to discuss breakthrough technologies, as well as the problems of innovation in the secure operation of modern railways. Despite the disruption caused by the global pandemic, 89 submissions were received for the 2020 edition, 38 of which were selected after review for presentation and publication here. These comprise 12 papers dealing with railways and mechanics, 20 covering railways and computer sciences, and 6 related to railways and management, together with the 2 contributions of the invited keynote speakers (professor Xiaoyan Lei, principle of East China Jiaotong University, and professor Erol Guler from George Mason University). The book provides an insight into new ideas and developments in the industry, and will be of interest to all railway practitioners.

Book excerpt: With an opinionated and irreverent tone, the author debunks most of the current theories in the field of modern physics, appealing to the scientific method and common sense. At the same time, in strict compliance with the already known experimental evidence, he proposes his own version of the facts, aimed at rationalizing and unifying the various aspects in which the nature that surrounds us manifests itself. The result is a possible model of the universe where events are all connected by a common thread, even if distributed on different scales, ranging from the subatomic to that of galaxies. In this perspective, in the middle, the living cell profits from a substrate and a habitat that have favoured its very existence. Reading of this book does not require any advanced scientific knowledge and is therefore accessible to non-experts, provided they are equipped with the necessary dose of eccentricity that allows them to appreciate these provocative pages.

Book excerpt: Many aspiring game designers have crippling misconceptions about the process involved in creating a game from scratch, believing a "big idea" is all that is needed to get started. But game design requires action as well as thought, and proper training and practice to do so skillfully. In this indispensible guide, a published commercial game designer and longtime teacher offers practical instruction in the art of video and tabletop game design. The topics explored include the varying types of games, vital preliminaries of making a game, the nuts and bolts of devising a game, creating a prototype, testing, designing levels, technical aspects, and assessing nature of the audience. With practice challenges, a list of resources for further exploration, and a glossary of industry terms, this manual is essential for the nascent game designer and offers food for thought for even the most experienced professional.

Book excerpt: ***** Shortlisted for International Autobiography of the Year in the Telegraph Sports Book Awards 2021 WINNER OF 2019 DANISH SPORTS BOOK OF THE YEAR 'Brutally candid.' - The Guardian 'An extraordinary, granular depiction of a young football star's life.' - The Daily Mail 'One of the best books I've read about being a Premier League star.' - Piers Morgan 'An excellent read with some incredible stories.' - TalkSPORT Breakfast Show 'One of the best football books I've read for a very long time.' - Sam Pilger, FourFourTwo Magazine 'Explosive.' - The Mirror 'Candid and brilliant.' - Nick Wright, Sky Sports Known as 'Lord Bendtner' to his fans and haters alike, Nicklas Bendtner has been lauded for his football skills at super clubs like Arsenal and Juventus. But his career was haunted by his rocky behaviour and tendency to self-sabotage. Very much a fable of the modern game, Bendtner talks with disarming honesty about the darker side of football and his own difficult fall from grace; about what it's like to have so much promise that you lose touch with reality altogether. It's is about growing up in a working class neighbourhood and what happens when you give a troubled, overconfident teen millions to spend. It's about fighting to reach the top in the worlds' toughest league but having no respect for hierarchy. It's about friendship, rivalry, and the constant quest for an adrenaline kick. It's about money - having too much of it - and an industry that has lost sight of what really matters. A modern footballing fable, it's a story of decline, temper, talent, great football and ultimately the tragedy of unfulfilled potential. Not since the days of Paul McGrath's Back From The Brink have we seen such honesty on the page of a footballer's memoir. Fans of Paul Merson, George Best and Tony Adam's autobiographies will also find pure fascination here in a story that has gripped international readers...
