Book excerpt: Edited by prominent researchers and with contributions from experts in their individual areas, Intelligent Energy Field Manufacturing: Interdisciplinary Process Innovations explores a new philosophy of engineering. An in-depth introduction to Intelligent Energy Field Manufacturing (EFM), this book explores a fresh engineering methodology that not only integrates but goes beyond methodologies such as Design for Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, Concurrent Engineering, TRIZ, green and sustainable manufacturing, and more. This book gives a systematic introduction to classic non-mechanical manufacturing processes as well as offering big pictures of some technical frontiers in modern engineering. The book suggests that any manufacturing process is actually a process of injecting human intelligence into the interaction between material and the various energy fields in order to transfer the material into desired configurations. It discusses technological innovation, dynamic M-PIE flows, the generalities of energy fields, logic functional materials and intelligence, the open scheme of intelligent EFM implementation, and the principles of intelligent EFM. The book takes a highly interdisciplinary approach that includes research frontiers such as micro/nano fabrication, high strain rate processes, laser shock forming, materials science and engineering, bioengineering, etc., in addition to a detailed treatment of the so called "non-traditional" manufacturing processes, which covers waterjet machining, laser material processing, ultrasonic material processing, EDM/ECM, etc. Filled with illustrative pictures, figures, and tables that make technical materials more absorbable, the book cuts across multiple engineering disciplines. The majority of books in this area report the facts of proven knowledge, while the behind-the-scenes thinking is usually neglected. This book examines the big picture of manufacturing in depth before diving into the deta

Book excerpt: Nanoscience and Nanotechnology are experiencing a rapid development in many aspects, like real-space atomic-scale imaging, atomic and molecular manipulation, nano-fabrication, etc. , which will have a profound impact not only in every field of research, but also on everyday life in the twenty-first century. The common efforts of researchers from different countries and fields of science can bring complementary expertise to solve the rising problems in order to take advantage of the nanoscale approaches in Materials Science. Nanostructured materials, i. e. materials made with atomic accuracy, show unique properties as a consequence of nanoscale size confinement, predominance of interfacial phenomena and quantum effects. Therefore, by reducing the dimensions of a structure to nanosize, many inconceivable properties will appear and may lead to different novel applications from na- electronics and nanophotonics to nanobiological systems and nanomedicine. All this requires the contribution of multidisciplinary teams of physicists, chemists, materials scientists, engineers and biologists to work together on the synthesis and processing of nanomaterials and nanostructures, und- standing the properties related to the nanoscale, the design of nano-devices as well as of new tools for the characterization of nano-structured materials. The first objective of the NATO ASI on Nanostructured Materials for Advanced Technological Applications was to assess the up-to-date achie- ments and future perspectives of application of novel nanostructured materials, focusing on the relationships material structure ? functional properties ? possible applications.

Book excerpt: While many books are dedicated to individual aspects of nanofabrication, there is no single source that defines and explains the total vision of the field. Filling this gap, Nanofabrication Handbook presents a unique collection of new and the most important established approaches to nanofabrication. Contributors from leading research facilities and academic institutions around the world define subfields, offer practical instructions and examples, and pave the way for future research. Helping readers to select the proper fabricating technique for their experiments, the book provides a broad vision of the most critical problems and explains how to solve them. It includes basic definitions and introduces the main underlying concepts of nanofabrication. The book also discusses the major advantages and disadvantages of each approach and offers a wide variety of examples of cutting-edge applications. Each chapter focuses on a particular method or aspect of study. For every method, the contributors describe the underlying theoretical basis, resolution, patterns and substrates used, and applications. They show how applications at the nanoscale require a different process and understanding than those at the microscale. For each experiment, they elucidate key solutions to problems relating to materials, methods, and surface considerations. A complete resource for this rapidly emerging interdisciplinary field, this handbook provides practical information for planning the experiments of any project that employs nanofabrication techniques. It gives readers a foundation to enter the complex world of nanofabrication and inspires the scientific community at large to push the limits of nanometer resolution.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The two-photon absorption (TBA) polymerisation technique has been widely recognised as a novel technique for the fabrication of three-dimensional microstructures. In the TPA polymerisation technique, a tightly focused near-infrared femtosecond pulsed laser beam, generating an extremely high photon density at the focal volume, interacts nonlinearly with photosensitive resin, which leads to the photopolymerisation of the resin intrinsically localised within the focal volume with sub-micron resolution. Hence, it can be employed as a building block for the fabrication of complex three-dimensional microstructures. This thesis concentrates on different areas associated with the TPA polymerisation technique with a view to contributing to the overall improvement of the fabrication process as well as to extending its applicability to other areas. An efficient material is a key criterion in the TPA polymerisation microfabrication process. A customised inorganic-organic hybrid material system, cross-linked by the TPA polymerisation technique, is investigated. The material is synthesised by the sol-gel method using a silicon alkoxide species that also possesses methacrylate functionality. Incorporation of a functionalised group (Zr) resulted in reduced drying time and enhanced mechanical stability of the deposited film. In addition, the zirconium loading enabled the modification of the properties of the polymerised resin, which provides the fabricated microstructure with superior mechanical, thermal and optical characteristics. A novel direct laser writing lithography technique to fabricate metal grating structure is proposed. A Lift-off technique is used for the fabrication process. A direct laser-written template structure is fabricated on a glass substrate using TPA polymerisation, which selectively opens the process window for the deposition of a gold layer. A 2D metal grating is realised after the polymer cast is removed using the lift-off technique. Optical characterisation of the grating structures shows the existence of surface Plasmon resonance. A parallel fabrication process by inducing photopolymerisation in a polymerisable resin with a femtosecond laser beam engineered by both diffractive and refractive techniques, and hence increased fabrication efficiency, is demonstrated. In the diffractive technique, diffractive optical elements (DOE), in combination with a high numerical aperture microscope objective, efficiently transform the laser beam into a linear array of multiple beam sport of equal intensity, which are then translated through the resin in order to write multiple structures simultaneously. On the other hand, in the refractive approach, an axicon lens redistributes the incoming Gaussian beam to an annulus. Hence, a polymerised ring pattern is realised, as opposed to a small voxel realised by the point spread function (PSF) of a Gaussian beam at the focal plane of the microscope{u2019}s objective. The key achievements from the study are firstly, the synthesis of zirconium loaded polymer system; secondly, development of a novel lift-off based fabrication technique and thirdly, development of two new parallel TP microfabrication techniques using axicon and DOE beam delivery.
